cabbage seedlings didn't transplant so well

A few days ago I transplanted 4 cabbage seedlings in the garden. I hardened them off for 6 days, the last day they were outside for over 24hrs and looking great. Within a day of transplanting, 3 of the 4 were looking pretty bad and one is doing well. It's pretty disappointing, especially since it makes me more nervous about a bunch of tomatoes and peppers I'm starting inside. I have no idea what went wrong, maybe they should have hardened off a bit longer, or maybe I damaged the roots while taking them out of their seedling containers. I guess one bright spot is that I should be able to also direct plant the cabbage, so I'll do that in the space where the seedlings failed.
