Oh boy oh boy....New Order!!!

I need new roses like a hole in the head! But....being addicted, I have put in an order for a friend in PA, (Quietness - hope it is tough and survives the Philly winters) and for the gardens here 2 General Schablikine, 2 Climbing Devoniensis, 2 Miss Atwoods.

I also saw a photo of Gilbert Nabonnand in an Australian garden and think I need to order that too. Covered with flowers - really spectacular.

Somehow, this addiction does not bother me - and hey, I don't drink and have quit smoking...so.

Oh you will love G. Nabonnand. The plant for us is open and airy, and the blooms have an opalescent quality I really enjoy.
And, is there anything lovelier than Devoniensis?
You should have enough warm weather to make it really happy.

Krafty, I don't know the instructor yet but we get a set of the brushes as part of the class. I don't think we are actually painting a project, just practicing and learning the different uses of that particular brush. I have just about every kind of brush made, some dating back to the early 80's. But I am always looking for that "magic brush". However, I seem to keep going back to the ones I have used forever because they just seem to work for me. I have never heard of Linda Lover (great name) but I am going to look her up on the web. Here's a real gem I just found on a website. It's Energy Star's Clothes Washing Advice LOL: The following helpful hints for washing clothes come from Energy Star: Always use HE detergent in HE washers. Fill up the washer to capacity each load. They use approximately the same amount of energy per load whether or not it is maxed out. Wash in cold water whenever possible. Heating water consumes approximately 90% of the energy required for a load. Avoid the sanitary cycle. It dramatically increases the energy required for a load of clothes due to the extremely hot water necessary to sanitize. Leave the door open when not in use to avoid any mold issues. Rinse the washer with 1 cup of bleach to reduce the buildup of mold and mildew.

I like that..."passions uplift". Jerome, we have a PASSION for roses. (It sounds better anyway). I have the bush form of Devoniensis and love her. Was enabled into G. Nabonnand a couple of weeks ago and now can hardly wait for him/her to arrive. I've heard great things about the General and Miss Atwood--wish I had all the room you have.

I like that....Passions uplift. Yeah, that's what I have - a passion. Besides...this place looks a lot prettier for it.

Hi Labrea, Jeri, Lux and Jeff.

There are a few Devoniensis bushes here. They're beginning to mature at 5 years old, and they'll be lovely...but I gotta think of them as Live Oak trees....Sllllooow.

I got the climbing form because I think the flowers look a bit different, and I want something huge.

Yeah, but that's OK Jerome.
Think about hobbling out there when you're 90-95, and making people listen to how little they were when you planted them.

I wish I could take you up to NoCal, and show you that really old one we collected from.
Neglected, and now lately abused horribly by "blow and go" gardeners, it's still one of the loveliest things I've ever seen.

Randy, how excellent to hear from you and to hear you talk about this rose. Today, I found this garden site in Australia that has a photo of Gilbert that just knocked me over. I'd never seen a bush shot before. Wow.

I like that Jeri...95 years old. Hope I make it that high. These roses are great.

Another variant: passion ennobles; addiction degrades. My gardening makes the world more beautiful and, I think, more healthy, as I garden organically and work by enriching the soil, and grow frugal varieties that don't consume a lot of precious water. I also think there's a difference between buying a plant that has a good chance of bringing me happiness for the rest of my life, and money paid for some pleasure that lasts an hour. And then there's the propagation, the diffusion of that rose and that happiness. I'm a confirmed tightwad, and all these considerations matter to me.

Yeah, Jerome, you do need G. Nabonnand. Wish I had room. Gen Schablikine is great. He's such a cheerful rose. I love his colors, and mine is filling out faster and more evenly than other young teas. Look out for his "alligator" leaves - very unique. And yes, passionate is definitely preferable to addicted. I'll have to remember that. Don't want no torn down, degraded rosarians! We are enobled and uplifted rosarians!

Jerome, I have also ordered Climbing Devoniensis. Like you, I shouldn't order any more roses yet, I still have to plant last years order!
But oh!, I am so looking forward to seeing it.

Jerome----Nice to see you posting---Where in Pa is your friend??---I will be following the progress of "Quietness" I've heard it does well in partial shade----

I also like the word "Passion" in place of "addiction"---I have a wonderful book by Peter beales called "A Passion for Roses"---it is great.

Quietness is a good rose here and suffers little or no winter dieback. I think it would do well in Philly!

Jerome ---I live northeast of Philadelphia---I'm not familiar with Wyndmoor but if it is close to Philly that makes it a neighbor.
