How often do you clen your pump?

I'm fighting dirty water at the moment and using quitl batting in front of the pump. It's working. Well... the quilt batting is getting pretty green and filthy.

Yesterday I decided to pull the skimmer out and clean the gunk out of the bottom of it. While I had it out I thought I'd clean the pump. I had last done that about a month ago when my Dad noticed that the waterfall flow seemed a little low. The flow seemed fine this time but was I amazed how much stronger it was after I hosed off the pump. I guess there was a lot of stuff stuck in the intake.

Is this something I should be doing every couple of weeks? The pond was new last July and, therefore, freakishly clean. Year two, of course, is a different story
