Molineux (Patrick), I am intrigued by your ideas and the way you explain things. I have a few goals in the garden this spring and I want more inspiration. You seem to have a poetic sense of all things roses. I know you love old-garden, antique and David Austin roses as much as I do. So, I have a few questions for you and I thought it would be fun for others to read.

What are your top ten antique roses and what are your top ten David Austin choices and why?

What roses are you planting next to each other in your garden and what kind of garden are you going for?

Would you mix the pastels with the more saturated colors, or keep it to a certain color scheme?

I myself was concentrating on ordering just a few hardy teas and a couple of damasks and polyanthas this year. I have several DA's already and was not going to order more right now, but you have enabled me to order WS 2000 and I bought The Romantic Garden because you and mendocino rose recommended

it. I guess I am one of your biggest fans(lol). Thanks for helping a guy out and responding to this in advance.

Chance, while I like Patrick, don't consider yourself a fan. You are just another victim such as myself. His waxing poetically can get you to order roses you never even thought about. He is enthusiastic and loves his garden I believe. Now, repeat to yourself, Patrick is an evil enabler and I am the VICTIM. Repeat this many times each day!

Okay Chance. First you've got to understand that I'm no MENDOCINO ROSE (Pam). She has acres upon acres of land on which to garden with a spectacular scenic backdrop. I garden on a small lot in the middle of a city. Our canvases are very, very different. My garden is limited by size and two big oak trees (actually an oak and a pecan tree). Think of it like this. Pam's RED ROSE RIDGE is the Sistine Chapel, while my garden is a page from the book of Kells.

I also have little experience with Old Garden Roses. I don't "do" non-repeaters (Albas, Damasks, Gallicas, Centifolias and most Mosses), and my climate is too cold for the Chinas, Teas and Noisettes. My 30 plus years of rose gardening experience is pretty much dominated by modern roses, Hybrid Teas in particular. Although the English and other "reproduction" Roses remain my passion, I didn't "discover" them until about 15 years ago. Heck, I've only been in my house for six or seven years.

So when asking advice keep this mind. Additionally, you are also going to get better cultivar advice from the Californian rosarians like Pam and Jeri Jennings. Your growing conditions in New Mexico are nothing like what I have to deal with in Maryland. Our air is very humid year round because the warm water coming up from the oceanic conveyor readily evaporates. That means black spot. Your climate is much, much dryer and probably warmer than zone 6b.

Now I feel confident to answer some questions.

What are your top ten antique roses and why?
I don't grow enough to have a top ten. Two that I can not live without are REINE DES VIOLETTES (Hybrid Perpetual, soft purple) and SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON (Bourbon, pale pink, a climbing sport is also available). In my mom's zone 7b rose garden I'm very fond of DUCHESSE DE BRABANT (Tea, dawn pink; Madame Joseph Schwartz is a white sport) and CRAMOISI SUPERIEUR (China, red blend; climbing sport also available). As for why all are really good roses that balance beauty with garden utility..

What are your top ten David Austin choices and why?
Heritage, Jude the Obscure, Molineux, Pat Austin, Pretty Jessica, Radio Times, Rose-Marie, Sharifa Asma, Tamora, William Shakespeare 2000. All are beautiful, killer fragrant, vigorous, have reliable repeat bloom, and the foliage can stay clean with infrequent spraying (approx. once 2-3 weeks).

What roses are you planting next to each other in your garden and what kind of garden are you going for?
Depends on the garden "room". I have two right now that I'm still experimenting with: Twilight's Bower and the Monet Garden. Twilight's Bower is all about mystery, magic (and I mean that literally), and cool colors. Right now it is on the east side of my house and is limited to three large flower beds. It is very Celtic with elements of fantasy Gothic; very "Mists of Avalon". The roses are in shades of cool pink (from pale lilac pink to rich magenta), blush white (white with a pink ting), and mauve/lavender, with an occasional blinding white or smoldering crimson to break up the monotony. Lots and lots of companion plants in true blues, rich purples, silver and lush emerald green. Rose List: Climbing La France, Clotilde Soupert, Deuil de Dr. Reynaud, Fair Bianca, Reine des Violettes, Rose-Marie, Salet, Sombreuil, The Prince, Vineyard Song, William Shakespeare 2000

The other is The Monet Garden. It is very small. Basically a long strip of land that runs from front of my property to the back along the western border. My yard is on a slope so I'm trying to play with perspective to make it appear bigger than it actually is. A skinny stone pathway, bordered by flower beds, leading up to a potting shed. The shed is the focal point. The Roses are all pastels: clear pinks, apricots, and yellows. Sky blue clematis, pansies and violets, sunflowers, reblooming irises, etc. BTW, I'm trying to do this garden on a much grander scale at my mother's house in Virginia. Rose List: Abraham Darby, Ambridge Rose, Evelyn, Graham Thomas, Happy Child, Heritage, Molineux, Pink Poodle, Sharifa Asma, & The Pilgrim.

When planting roses next to each other I like to graduate hues. For example: warm pink to apricot-pink to apricot to apricot-yellow to yellow. Another example: pink tinged white to pale pink to light pink to medium pink to rose to magenta to lilac pink to lavender and mauve. Be very careful with pinks. There are cool pinks and warm pinks, neither of which look good when planted right next to each other.

Would you mix the pastels with the more saturated colors, or keep it to a certain color scheme?
I like to stick to a theme, but still using the more saturated colors sparingly as accents. For example in a sea of blues, pale pinks and silvers a bright shock of white or a smoldering hint of crimson adds a lot of interest. The only exception being what I like to call the kaleidoscope garden. Here is when you mix all the colors of the rainbow together in one big fantasmic burst. You can see this kind of effect in really large public rose gardens that grow primarily Hybrid Teas.

Hello Geo, I see Patrick has not responded. Though I live in a completely different zone than Patrick, I have grown Jayne Austin for about 12 years; first in zone 8 Coastal British Columbia, where it was my absolute favorite rose, and now in zone 4 Ontario, where it does not do quite so well. Here is what Patrick had to say about Jayne Austin in his famous "Fragrant Rose List": (Austin, 1993) buff yellow tinted golden apricot. Another unusually scented Austin, the fragrance is a blend of strong Tea rose and phenol. I thought Buff Beauty was the ultimate Noisette look-a-like suitable for cooler zones until I read the description of this ravishingly beautiful English Rose. The Old Garden Rose flower form is absolutely perfect. The tall shrub is extremely vigorous and can be grown as a low climber. It also roots very easily and grows like a weed when not grafted. The foliage is said to be extremely disease resistant and suitable for no spray gardens. DonÂt miss this one! Winter hardy all the way up to zone 4b. Recommended by RideauRoseLad. And yes, it was I who submitted Jayne Austin to Patrick's list. I do not know if Patrick ever actually grew Jayne Austin. I do however grow both Jayne and Evelyn, which are the roses you wish to compare; and have grown them, both here in cold climate Ontario and in British Columbia. Here is what Patrick wrote about Evelyn: (Austin, 1991) Â apricot pink blend. Before I begin let me tell you that this is not a good English Rose for the beginner. Evelyn is a temperamental prima-donna who just so happens to have the most beautiful flowers that IÂve ever seen. This is the rose responsible for switching me from Hybrid Teas to David Austin English Roses. The blooms are ravishing, an irresistible blend of pastel pink and apricot. At times she can be entirely pink but trust me this isnÂt a fault as the pink is luminous and heart lifting. Form is incredible and entirely changeable. At times she is deeply cupped with too many to count petals intricately arranged within. Other times she is flattened into a dinner plate sized quartered shape around a button eye. Yummy!!! This is my sisterÂs favorite rose (she loves it so much that she buys the entire Evelyn line of toiletries from Crabtree and Evelyn just so she can smell like it) and our mother is very fond of it too. Ironically they grow her to perfection and Evelyn is THE STAR of my motherÂs formal rose garden. Personally IÂve always had problems with Evelyn and it wasnÂt until after I had moved out of my parentÂs house and returned for a visit that I discovered the tricks of growing her successfully. My sister Tracey had taken over responsibility for the garden and Evelyn was thriving in lush blooming health. She does two things differently that seems to make the world of difference. First, Tracey never hard prunes, instead she cuts just enough off to keep the shrub shapely (BTW the Hybrid Teas look incredibly ratty with this technique but that is another story). Second, she is a heavy feeder with organic fertilizers (lots and lots of Mills Magic Mix, chopped up banana peels, alfalfa and anything else her "intuition" tells her to put down). IÂve also read reports that Evelyn does not tolerate shade at all and resents root competition from trees/tall shrubs. Honestly I think this is a rose that only women can cultivate. Evelyn has a fragrance that is a complex blend of classic rose and fruit (it has a definate "peachy" aroma). To me the fragrance is only moderately strong but others rave about it. I'm not surprised since my nose is very insensitive to fruity scents. Winter hardy to zone 5.* So on to your request for comparison, a bit of an apples and oranges thing. Both are very good roses, Evelyn is already a classic, Jayne, more of an undiscovered gem. First, habit: Evelyn is a vigorous shrub to about 4 feet. She also has a tendancy to throw both longer canes and small, wiry canes that inevitably flower. While the flowers are large and beautiful in the extreme, the habit results in a number of small wiry canes with flowers in the dirt in my garden. I cut these and use them for posies, but this tendancy still annoys me a little. Jayne is much more upright and in a warm climate will be a pillar rose to 7 or 8 feet. Both repeat flower very well, short of continuous, but rapid repeat flushes never the less. Next, flowers: Evelyn's are larger (4 plus inches), intricately muddled, and multi-hued pink, pearl and apricott depending on the weather (temperature). Jayne's are smaller (2.5 to 3 inches), buttery yellow, much more formal and closely resemble the Noisette, Celine Forestrier. In a temperate climate like Oregon, or Southwestern British Columbia, they are perfection, and unrivalled. My West Coast experience backs Paul up absolutely. Jayne Austin is my no holds barred favorite rose for the Pacific North West. Unfortunately in the East, where heat and humidity are the norm, the flowers are less ephemeral. Jayne seems to have more fragile flower petals. They do not seem to stand up to the heat as well as those of Evelyn and wilt in hot sun and extreme heat. Mind you, I moved my plant of Jayne last year to a better site and the flower performance has improved. I have moved her again this year, next to Evelyn actually where she will have more room, and afternoon shade, so I want to see what she does this summer. Fragrance Both roses are EXTREMELY FRAGRANT all the time and even in the heat. You will not find more fragrant roses anywhere. Evelyn has a soft fruity myrrh fragrance as is immortalized in the Crabtree and Evelyn fragrance, sigh... However, Jayne, has a potent blend of Tea rose and phenol, yes phenol. But to my snout Jayne's fragrance is the greatest rose scent there is. Major personal preference here; but Jayne's scent is TO DIE FOR!!!!! Vigour and Disease Resistance Jayne is the winner in both vigour and disease resistance in a warm climate. Jayne is 100% disease free in my experience over 12 years and 2 extremely different climates. A rare feat for a rose variety. Evelyn is also very disease resistant for me in both climates, but not 100% clean. Evelyn grows strongly and vigorously, but her habit is more eratic, and less pleasing. As I have learned through direct experience, roses will act much differently in different climates. So my suggestiion to you is get one of each and trial them. You may end up with two roses you love, perish the thought, or you will discover which does better for you in your yard. So as the saying goes, follow your bliss. Carol - Clotilde does ball for me but not badly. You are right about the heat, which helps the petals to expand and open. I consider balling a price I'm willing to pay for such perfectly quartered flowers. Robert - I spray a fungicide (Mancozeb) approximately once every three weeks. I do not use insecticides. Note: fungicides DO NOT kill insects and animals. I have gone completely no spray in my mother's coastal Virginia zone 7b garden. I replaced the black spot prone modern roses with Tea, China and Shrub roses. So far the results have been mixed. The aforementioned roses have kept more of their leaves but the defoliation is still significant, which I hide with mounds of lavender. Frankly, in my own garden, I wouldn't dream of going completely no spray. Patrick

I had to really stifle myself and not purchase all that I wanted. I began purchasing minis last year and had a few losses so I am not feeling very confident in my ability to grow them.

Carla, I would use "Interview With A Vampire" as an analogy for Patrick. At times he is like Louis, seducing us with mystery and beauty, making us willing victims of his magical garden visions. At other times, he is like Lestat, a sadistic opportunist, preying on our weakness for roses with incredible prose and decadent photos. Making us fall into aquiring roses we don't need, but are now convinced we can't live without.

Patrick, I appreciate your response so much. You are being humble, but what knowledge you do have of roses and what you do with your own garden is much appreciated here. I find that with you it is more about the magic of roses than just the growing of them.

I like many of the roses you have chosen and I love the garden rooms you are working on. I'm sure your garden rooms will be places of wonder and very artistic when complete. I like the essence and color pallete you are going for. The Twilight's Bower garden room sounds especially enticing. I like the colorway of it. I can sense positive energy being released under many a waxing moon there.

Thanks for all the advice! I like your rule of graduating the colors thereby weaving the roses together into a more complete and harmonious whole garden. I have WS on order thanks to you. I will have to work it into just the right garden spot.

By the way, "Mists Of Avalon" is one of my favorite books, funny you mention it. And yes, I also value all the inspiration and poetry Pam gives and all the valuable information Jeri contributes to this forum. Thank you, Patrick!

I'm glad you got Patrick going a bit. I do so enjoy his way of garden writing. I would like to give you a bit of unflowery advice though. Have you been to the Albequerque Botanic Garden? There is a rose garden in the works there. The wonderful thing about it is that it will be entirely suited to your Southwest climate and water saving. I heard that there will be a number of Pernitianas and Bourbons in the garden because they do well in New Mexico. That's exciting.

Mendocino rose (Pam), I have not been to the Albuquerque Botanic Garden. I'm going to have to check it out, though I rarely go there. If it involves ideas on water saving that would make it a must. I like the fact you say it will include Pernitianas and Bourbons. That would be a treat to see. Thanks for the tip, Pam.

Chance, I just thought I'd add d few things as a kindred spirit. I see garden rooms as little vignettes. This is so much fun amd so personal. I name garden areas the way Patrick does. I love his idea of Twilight's Bower. If you can think of something that has a very personal meaning, something that enchants your imagination and go from there. A part of my garden is called The Flora Garden. In the center of concentric circles under an arbor is a statue that I adore of Flora, goddess of flowers. The idea of honoring her under an arbor of climbing roses with flowers all around is so pleasing and meaningful to me. These things don't have to be exspensive or too difficult. It's the perenal touch that you and other people will love.

You will do well to listen to Patrick for ideas and inspiration. However, be aware that he stretches the truth a bit. His garden is actually gigantic, much larger than Pam's. While the main plot may be modest as he describes, he controls hundreds of auxiliary enterprises such as the Carla Rose Annex, the Sammy Satellite Garden and the Harry Bloom Dependency. At each of these locations, glazed-eyed gardeners unwittingly toil at his pleasure to grow his favorite cultivars.

One need only to sit on hapless Harry's Adirondack chair, extend one's arms and touch Souvenir de la Malmaison, William Shakespeare 2000, Angel Face, Tiffany, Molineux and the clematis Betty Corning - should one require proof.

Ahhhh Harry my old chum, can you truly say you are sorry for obtaining all those beautiful, fragrant plants. Well ... okay, I can accept Angel Face, who always gave me a bit of trouble, but the others are solid performers. BTW, the fragrance from your Adirondack chair must be positively intoxicating, what with the PROVENCE lavender, roses and clematis.

Speaking of clematis here is one of Harry's wonderful pics. This ethereal beauty is BETTY CORNING. The petite nodding bell-like flowers are lavender-blue in color and softly fragrant. Betty Corning is one of the easier clematis to grow and definately recommended for a newbie. Gosh that pic sure is lovely. Like something out of a fairy tale.

Hrmmph! Fairy Tale? More like something out of Patrick's imagination. While his eloquent prose may be perceived as beauty and art to some, it is little more than a command to toil for his benefit. As we happily do. Just can't wait until this summer when Betty reaches the top of the arbor.

Even Angel Face thrives here in the Patrick Garden North. We thank you Master.

Harry, you are so funny! I know what you mean though. I have a Molineux in my front yard that I call Patrick. It wasn't a conscious thing. It just seemed that was the way it was. He stands there overseeing the front beds as if to make sure I don't neglect anything.

WS2000 greats you at the entrance to the tiny Survivors Garden while RdV stands watch over the upper backyard beds. Betty Corning is arriving next month.

Oh darn it! You folks are making me tear up! It warms the cockles of my heart to know that there are roses out there in the country named after me. That is what enabling is all about, sharing the joy of roses. In that vein I really must give some credit to my old friend ROSEBUD. Most of you probably don't remember him but Steve was really something else. Wonderful enabler. A true master.

BTW, here are some more pics. Folks you really can't blame me for these gorgeous shots. I'm just the distributor, not the artiste. The first is a closeup of BETTY CORNING by Harry and his phenomenal hoe. Just look at the sheer delicacy and then try to say no. I didn't think so. The second is PERLE D'AZUR by HoovB, previously posted at the "Speaking of Clematis" thread. PdA is legendary for having the best true blue color. Isn't it glorious? This cultivar is often recommended for newbies who want a really big blue clematis. Once established it will easily climb to 20 feet. If you need something smaller then try PRINCE CHARLES, which is similar in every way but stays put at 10 to 12 feet. Lastly is an image of Perle d'Azure (left) and Betty Corning (right) by david 5311 previously posted at "The clematis blues" thread on the Perennials Gallery. Now if you can resist trying a wonderful clematis after seeing THAT image then you have a stronger willpower than I. Sigh, sooooooooo beautiful!

Hey everyone! He's doing it again. I'm trying to hold back from getting Betty Corning. I'm picturing it in my garden though and that is dangerous.

Pam, thanks so much for the link with the slide show of your garden. It is something I will go back and look at over and over for inspiration. It is dream garden.

I don't know about Harry but my "Patrick's Corner" of the garden is coming along quite well. I don't have Betty Corning but don't tell the evil one, he knows my weakness for lavender/bluish colors!

I don't think our beloved Patrick has a camera yet.
We would not dare imagine the financial havoc and arable land shortage which might result had he a nice new Nikon at his disposal. There is actually a double secret directive that forbids any Garden Web member from giving or loaning a camera to Patrick.

AHEM! Sorry Harry but I DO have a digital camera. After years of asking Rob finally bought me one for Christmas. It is a expensive sucker too. I waited for nearly half an hour for the manager who had the most experience with the cameras. I asked for the camera that takes the best outdoor closeups. It is still in its packaging waiting to be opened. Frankly it has become almost like a holy object. I'm almost afraid to open it, but trust me, I WILL eventually and then ... oh my lord the mere idea gives me the shivers. I've been holding back for years, but very-Very-VERY soon !!!IT IS ON!!!

You got me all wrong. Picture a 5'8" tall, 42 year old male rosarian with a baby face, librarian glasses and curly black hair. He is wearing typical gardening attire - ratty blue painters hat, t-shirt, shorts, ratty sneakers, gardening gloves and holding a pair of red Felco pruners in one hand and a potted yellow English Rose in other. No horns, but a big wide toothy grin and a twinkle in his candid, innocent looking, violet-blue eyes.

Patrick, I would have NEVER pictures you to have dark hair. I had you as a reddish brown haired beauty, :-) But you still remain an enabler to the fullest degree.
BTW, I still frown that you can grow delphs. So the dark one has a camera now. Carla shudders with fear.
