The orchids I can't grow and why...

I want to do a good deed for the New Year, so I thought I'd start a thread which would help beginners and also provide some advice for more experienced growers. As everybody knows every orchid has it's preferred conditions. Some are more tolerant than others and some are downright fussy. To get things started here are mine:

Cymbidium - a lot grow great for me but will not flower, I think the main problem is we don't get cold enough temps in late fall (below 10C 50F), though some don't mind this.

Catasetum - opposite problem. we get low temps from June to August and Catasetum, which is an Amazonian species, does not like this. No temps below 15C 60F. They must also be completely dry during winter, which we are not.

Masdevallia etc - only infracta, the Brazilian Masdevallia, does well for me. Temperatures here are too high for the Andean species.

It goes without saying, any of the cool/cold growing terrestrial orchids from Europe or N America would not do well here. Though there are a number of excellent S American terrestrial orchids ie. Zygopetalum which are fine.

I have a whole host that do great!
