Two Dirt Days, April 11 and March 14th

You are all welcome to make this valiant annual effort to prepare the actual Vintage Garden for it's annual Open Garden held yearly in May. Some of us have gone up in small groups over the winter to work and much has been done. The hybrid tea beds are weeded and mulched as well as the teas but there is serious work yet to be done in the old European section. This last refuge of some of the world's rarest Gallicas,Bourbons, Hybrid perpetuals, Damasks,Centifolias, Albas and Moss roses needs some attention to endure and go on providing us with the ogrs we all love so much. The soil is a great wonder,the weeds seem to leap into your hand and the pleasure of looking out over the beautiful Sebastopol hills in the soft Spring air draw some of us back year after year. The potluck is wonderful, the company of the highest order and the rose conversations are a joy to all of us. Join this band of "miscreants (as Jon of Wessex has been know to call us). He is actually eating his heart out that he can't come grub with us.If you need maps, they are to be found on the Vintage website and if you need more information, just ask or e-mail me.We gather between 9 and 10p.m., Saturday mornings. Bring your gloves, hat,favorite digger and a dish to share. Out of towners are welcome to bring paper goods or drinks.

"Cocktail 1934"

From our own correspondent (BERLIN, Oct. 19)

After 73 mixers from 11 countries had produced 170 different varieties of cocktail, the International Bar Mixers' Union in its rally at Frankfurt chose as "Cocktail 1934" a mixture known by the name of "Hoar Frost." An appearance of hoar frost is given by rubbing the glass with lemon juice and afterwards in sugar crystals. The ingredients are 25 percent each of gin, curacoa (triple dry), and lemon juice, 10 per cent of grenadine and 15 per cent of Jamaica rum.

Hoar Frost Cocktail

25% Gin
25% Curacoa (Triple Dry)
25% Lemon Juice
15% Jamaica Rum
10% Grenadine

Shake with ice and strain into glass.

Belonging. And protection. And...Home.
...and, before they went to bed, they put the crumbs out on the windowsill.
For the birds.

How can you get more charming? Hopeless and thank you. We dream of you showing up with a flask of these lemon orange ba!!busters in had. I'm sure we should make it through nicely...something to consider. Enjoy the frosty lace and Kate and Joe when they come!

Josh, I think that's a bandanna folded into a triangle shape. The straight side is put at the base of the hairline and the pointed side goes over the top of the head almost to the forehead. Then, the ends are brought around and tied with the point tucked under. I used to wear one like that as a teenager when my hair was "up in pincurls"! (I'm not sure if my description is understandable, but I now shudder to think I went out in public like that.)

It was a splendid sunshiney respite from the welcome rain of the following few days. Just seeing Phillip up and about was wonderful.Paula is not one to toot her own horn but she brought an apple pie made from her own apples that was purely wonderful.Joanne's husband brought an enormous bag of the sweetest oranges any of us had ever tasted. Dare I say cauliflower is extra wonderful cooked in such juice with a dab of pesto...Pam brought Paula and me two of her beautiful heads. Mine is hung to great advantage over Bishop Darlington and I moved the other ones I own out into the garden where the garden is vastly flattered. That garden is such a gift to the rest of us--I always feel so saved when I leave, sounds funney but 'tis true my dear ones and I hope it can happen to you too. As usual we all thanked Gregg for letting us weed in his garden. la

Evening All! It was the same here, Tuesday, Margo, overcast and windy but the wind wasn't bitterly cold, which was a welcome change. My mini daffs are starting to bloom! The crocuses are still going strong. And I too am still tired. Bummer! I was reading back thro the posts on this thread and way back at the beginning of this swap, I promised to keep the Robin's flight plan posted. You may have noticed, I haven't done that! So here it is, a little late, and I'll try my best to keep it updated! @J Gil Organic Well no, that's no right, tillering does not constitute spreading, you still have just one plant. Grasses that spread, like KBG or Bermuda, do so by rhizomes and pop up a new plant here and there, filling in empty areas. Fescue does not do that. Right now it is an awful time to seed in NC, you'll just be growing crabgrass. And whatever survives will be killed by the heat. Tall fescue is overseeded at 4lbs/ksf. Even when mixed with KBG at 90/10, you're still at around 4lbs. But we're talking about seeding bare dirt here, so it should be more like 8lbs/ksf. You're about 6lbs short. I looked at your profile and you have a picture that says :" Using weed & feed on your lawn? Active ingredient glyphosate."probably carcinogenic". EPA". Can you name one weed and feed product with glyphosate in it? Because glyphosate aka Roundup will wipe out your entire lawn, so it makes no sense to put that in a weed and feed product. Excuse my bluntness, but you dish out so much misinformation that I can't help but doubt your claims of being a lawn care professional for 10 years. And if it is true, then I feel sorry for your customers.

Ahh, Jon your garden is most stunning at all times of the year. I can picture that beautiful entry to your garden and the delicious aroma upon entry and I can see Felicia on your arch.

Lovely picture, Jon. I'm glad you posted it. We are unlikely to ever see such a thing in this neck of the woods (which on the whole that is a good thing), so must have our winter garden beauty second hand. Nice of you to share.
