Growing from Seed

something's biting off my impatiens heads!

I am growing a flat of impatiens seedlings under lights in my basement. I had four or five tiny seedlings last night when I went to bed. This morning, the stems were still there but the leaves were gone. It's a clean cut across the stem leaving about 1/8"of stem. It's not damping off because the stems are still sturdy and strong and the leaves are gone. This happened a few days ago as well when the first batch germinated. Any ideas?

Pill bugs might be a possibility too...

Something similar happened to my first batch of seedlings this year. I couldn't swear to it, but after much research I think it was a cricket living in my soil [smacks own hand for not using new potting soil].

Maybe just a bite out of every stem is all it needs, especially if there are lots of stems. Maybe it doesn't like the leaves. That would be my guess. Is it a soft-shell turtle? That's even better eating than gator-tail in my opinion. Glenda

They're probably fleas or chiggers. We had hundreds on our boots and pant legs a couple weeks ago at Wells Mills Park. They bit mostly our feet and ankles and itched like mad!

Depends on where you are as to what it's most likely to be. Here, it'd be snails, Where you are it might be something else. You want to try to figure out what's doing it before you start trying to control it so your methods are effective. You are probably going to have to replant those beans, looks like they're done, but I would try to figure out what's doing it so the same thing doesn't happen again.

Do you have a cat? My kitties love nothing better than tender little green seedlings. They did in my impatiens, my bunny tails, and about a dozen other things last year before I caught it!! I planted cat grass for them this year, but I can't say whether or not they've given up on the other things. I don't have many tiny seedlings in the house this year because I wintersowed!
