Hardy Climber for morning sun only?

Looking for a hardy climber for the front of my house - I'd like to grow it along my wrought iron railing in front of my terrace.

I've been researching and the only one I consistently come up with is New Dawn that falls under my criteria: a long bloomer hardy to my zone 5 (milwaukee), preferably red but I'll settle for pink, shade tolerant due to morning sun only on a southeast corner of my home (lots of mature trees up front), so maybe 3, 4-5 hours of sun?

Next question - where do I find it? Roses are fairly new to me so not sure if this is commonly found locally. How much should I expect to pay if I order from an online nursery?

No rose is going to like that amount of sun. If the site gets close to half a day, then I'd try Captain Samuel Holland instead of New Dawn. It's hardier and it may be more shade tolerant.

What you may be able to find locally depends totally on what types of local nurseries you have. Around here, it's rare to find a good rose for the local conditions in a local store. This seems quite common in colder zones.

I agree with MG--New Dawn does much better as it gets more sun.

Once bloomers make a lot of sense if you are dealing with tree cover--they typically bloom when the Sun is highest in the sky. In the Fall, the Sun follows a much lower path, and is blocked by the trees, which have more foliage than in the Spring.

Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia

New Dawn, but she's a monster, so beware. Pink Perpetue. Love her so much! No fragrance that I've noticed, though. Climbing Clotilde, but she's another monster and can ball in many climates. Wonderful fragrance. Georgetown Noisette. Nice rose with a really great fragrance. Very tall, but easy to keep in check compared to the monsters. Smallish blooms, though. Natchitoches Noisette, but I don't know how long it takes her to reach a good tall height (yet). She doesn't need much sun at all and is also nicely fragrant. I can't remember whether noisettes are hardy in your zone. If they sound good, make sure to check around!

serenae - I used clear plastic cups, and cut drainage slits in the cups. Then I take a ziplock baggie and cut slits in the bottom and top of that for drainage and ventilation. Some rain water as well as melted snow gets inside, but by this time of year it still needs occasional watering. I wouldn't be able to just, spray at the baggies, to get enough water in lol*, so I open all the baggies and spray a little water in that way, then close back up. It isn't really THAT big of a hassle, to me at least, because they are all on my front stoop and I only water maybe once a week at best. Because of that baggies covering the cups a lot of moisture is retained in those containers and until the weather is really warm it doesn't evaporate that quickly. Once the weather is warm enough that it DOES start to dry out quicker, it's also usually warm enough to just open up the baggies altogether. I have also used the gallon sized baggies with containers that I got from plants bought at the garden center, milk jug bottoms and pop bottle bottoms. Good points nippstess and thank you frances and buford. I did forget about hardiness only meaning "Does the plant survive?" Our winters range from mild to cold, but I lived for years in upstate NY, Wi and Montreal, so I don't really consider it cold, but I'm not a rose! DA says it can be grown as a 6-8 fto climber if un-pruned. It's the same plant, just trained differently. I think it's possible because the canes are thin and bendy. Frances, I already got the roses from Lowe's for a stupid cheap $$$ and am trying to incorporate them in something remotely approaching 'aesthetically pleasing!' Hah! :) I really only need it to go to the bottom of the 5' window and not be totally obscured by the 'Sugar Moon' that will be placed to its left. I'm putting Heathcliff in front VQ and to the left of Sugar Moon. I'm trying to plant them out today after rigging up the deer fencing. (Not taking anymore chances) as I already amended the soil. I've waited for some more blooms on the 1st yr VQ to see how it will look. I'll post pics next yr when it matures a bit. (And I fix the concrete and paint the window trim.) Thanks for the input. Oh, and how much sun are your plants getting? Will 6hrs. be enough?

I've got John Cabot doing well with a half day of sun, but that's probably more than what you have since I don't have any trees to block it. Another issue is that John Cabot is a very thorny rose and not the best if you're going to be anywhere near it.

If you're willing to take a trip to the Madison area, Jung's Garden Centers have several of the Explorer roses as well as the Radler roses (Ramblin' Red and others). There's a couple of good nurseries around Milwaukee but you'll have to call them in the spring and see what they get in. Expect to pay about $20 to $30 locally, and a bit more online due to shipping costs. Check any online site with Dave's Garden Watchdog website to see how their feedback is before you order. Jung's doesn't have the best feedback but the plants in their outlet stores are usually healthy and you can see it before you buy it.

Yikes...not sure what would work. I have Jeanne Lajoie growing on a fence. She is doing well and only gets 5 hours of sun. Very cold hardy. I bought mine at a local nursery, but the link below will give you many mail order choices. Click on the "buy from" tab for suppliers.

Louise Odier is a tall Bourbon that is hardy and shade tolerant. I buy from Roses Unlimited but Chamblee's also has a good reputation.

3 or 4 hours of sun can be almost enough in places like Florida with a long growing season, light that is very bright, and a hot climate. In areas with shorter growing seasons, 3 or 4 hours is not going to yields optimal results. What about something like a climbing Hydrangea?
