Wintersowing Rugosa seeds?

Hi, I bought some Rosa Rugosa seed on eBay today and wonder if I have enough winter left to wintersow it here in Alabama or if I will have to do the whole refrigerator stratification thing.

I'm a newbie so any helpwould be great! I want to present my Mom with a bunch of happy young rosebushes for her birthday since her new property is "nekkid"

Hi Amy,

I do not know about how much winter is required for Rosa Rugosa seeds to germinate, but I can share my experience. I live in Virginia and I winter sowed some Rosa Rugosa seeds In February 2004, and they germinated that spring. In March of 2006 I sowed some Rosa Rugosa Alba, and they did not germinate until February of 2007. My recommendation would be to use a large container just in case you need to hold the container over the summer.

Hi all. Started out researching tomatoes and somehow found Trudi's site and then discovered wintersowing! So, I have a ton of tomatoes - seriously, I have donated $25 twice, so I have many, many, many toms and I am so happy. I went ahead and wintersowed a few even though some in my zone wait until later because I just had to start! Was originally looking for seeds that I could wintersow successfully now but found a bunch of perenial seeds for sale at my local hardware store so I'm set! Ricjo22, I looked at your list and I don't even know what all that stuff is! Off to try again on setting up a trade list. Thanks for the help! I love this site! Susan

Winter Sowing can work everywhere Nis941 - just try and get your seeds together early each season and have your supplies ready and when the cool/cold weather is coming GET THEM OUT THERE (even if it's before the recommended date of Dec. 21..this year we had an early cold snap).
