I just read the post about the light meter. I have a new meter for water, complements of a granddaughter. It made me wonder what gadgets or tools are NECESSARY for a new grower to EFFECTIVELY grow their first orchids successfully. I want my babies to be as healthy and not just survive. Got my first book today GROWING CLASSIC ORCHIDS, by Mike Tibbs & Ra Bilton It is a beautiful and informative.

You need to further define just where you plan to grow your orchids: on a shelf in the house, outside, in a greenhouse, in a terrarium, ???? Each has different needs.
the conditions you need to meet are:
1. light
2. water
3. humidity
4. temperature
5. feeding
6. planting mix
7. air circulation
8. pests and diseases

Hi, smittee. I don't think you need to get gadgets ahead of time, really. If you've grown plants at all, dirt or houseplants, you have most of what you may need.

Use your money to buy orchids with, is IMO. If you just have to have a gadget, get one of those eye-dropper things for measuring out medicine from Walgreen's. Works a treat for measuring weak doses of fertilizer.

If something you really need is missing, you'll notice it, and get it then.

In the meantime, books are good. Read all you can, but mostly you have to learn by doing it.

Ken, While you stated you weren't trying to be unfriendly, you certainly were. This site is a continual, ongoing site with new people joining daily and while you may spend hours on the site and have been here for who knows how long, it does not give you the right to offend people who have a simple question. If it is a repeated question, how is the newbie to know? It is only fair to respond with kindness and respect. Your answer was enough to run some newbies off with their tail tucked between their legs wondering "Why did I ask?" Luckily Cateyanne didn't do that. It would do you well to take some basic communication classes in how to deal with people. You seem to have a condescending attitude which is certainly not helpful to people who come here for comradre and assistance. I hope that the next time a question comes up that you have seen numerous times before you put the brain in gear before you chose to lash out at someone with your "spoon fed" commments.

The highways belong to the people - they are ours - the present system (gas tax) is the best way of maintenance and new highways. Around here, SE PA, traffic is not really too bad, growth seems to be regulated some, but we definitely and obviously need another lane surrounding Harrisburg . The "highway/traffic designers" seem to have a penchant for creating congestion rather than fixing it..

My experience with a Nest & Ecobee smart wifi thermostat

One of my thermostats recently died after 10yrs so I started looking for a "smart" thermostat. After browsing the web I concluded I'd try the Nest (crowd fav) and the Ecobee3 (newest model but ecobee seems to have a very good reputation online). I wanted to share some of my initial thoughts between the two since there isn't much out there yet. Before buying these stats I realized I needed the 24v common wire connected and luckily our house was wired with 6 strand wire and all I had to do was hook up the 5th wire to the C terminal. This made life easy for me. I bought the Nest from Lowe's so I had that immediately. The Ecobee3 was bought direct a week later and it was 2 day shipping. The Nest had more heft and solid feel. It felt like it was worth the $250 whereas the Ecobee3 is very lightweight plasticy cheap feeling like my existing stat was. It was a bit hard to believe it was more then the Nest. I did have some cosmetic damage on my Ecobee3 and am in the process of exchanging the unit with them. Installation was similar on both. I had 5 wires and both units started right up after I turned the power back on. Ecobee3 has more initial questions than the Nest if I remember correctly. Once setup the Ecobee3 definitely has more things configurable for your HVAC system vs the Nest. The Nest app is smoother to operate. Ecobee3 app is a little clunky but has more settings to customize. Ecobee3 doesn't show the energy savings/usage yet but it says that feature is coming soon. The one thing that really interested me was the remote sensor on the Ecobee3. This stat is on our 2nd floor. We primarily occupy 2 bedrooms and if this thing can average the two rooms to better even out the temperature that would be great. We have tried adjusting the vents but there is still quite a bit of difference. Its a bad time to review these stats right now because my HVAC system isn't really running much. Just a tad at night to keep the house warm. I've decided to keep the Ecobee3 and return the Nest based on the more configurable settings and the remote sensor with comfort in mind.

Part 2 As far as supplies, I'd contact major online suppliers and any local scrapbook, office supply and craft stores to see of they will work with you when purchasing supplies. They may give you free shipping, put together a basic kit to donate to you or give you a discounted rate for purchases since it's for a school. Your kind of class will undoubtedly inspire many a scrapbooker to continue long after the class is over and if you make it known where the supplies came from, they are more likely to go to that same place to purchase their own supplies in the future. That might be a good incentive for a business to donate supplies. (If you find you are forced to pay for a lot of things yourself, post messages on several bulletins boards explaining your situation and asking for donations of any extra supplies people have and I'll bet you'll get supplies pouring in! The downside to that would be you wouldn't know what you're getting- you might end up with ten of this and none of that-, what condition it would be in and it may not be wise to give out your address on the net. If you do this I'd suggest using the school address, "attn.: your dept.", or getting a P.O. box and only post that address. It's been done with great success in the past.) I don't shop online much, but some great online suppliers are dMarie.com (I have shopped here and was very pleased), twopeasinabucket.com, pebblesinmypocket.com, and Keeping Memories Alive at scrapbooks.com. CK magazine has a lot of great advertisements and I'm sure you can find more suppliers to appeal to in there. These are just the few suppliers I can think of off the top of my head. I'd recommend using large tables rather than individual desks for several reasons. You can have groups of four or five (even six if the tables are large enough) at a table and share supplies easily, eliminating the need for many duplicates. Also the area afforded on an individual desk will probably be too small a workspace. Have students supply their own basics such as: scissors, their choice of adhesive (you'll want to explain and/or demonstrate each type of suggested adhesives, emphasizing what ever they choose it must be acid-free), a basic black journaling pen (with acid-free ink) and, of course, photos. Preferably ones that are duplicates. Third, what to teach and how to teach it. That will depend largely how much time you have. If it is a class in and of itself, you will be able to be more flexible than if it's a short section of another class. The best way to learn how to scrapbook is to actually do it so Id give demos and give them lots of class time to work on their own. I would start with the basic principles of design, color wheel, etc. These would be good quiz material. There is a book put out by CK called "Simple Scrapbook Makeovers" that I believe specifically addresses it as it applies to scrapbooking. There were several scrapbooking books I got from the library that had that info in them as well. I cant think of the titles now because since Id had design classes I didnt pay much attention to that part of the books. For the final test or exam you could make it a take-home type project and give them time in class to work on it to use class supplies. You could require certain elements like, 1)one layout should use the element of balance, 2)one layout should use a complimentary color scheme, 3)one should use one of the following techniques: list two or three techniques you covered in class and give them their choice, etc. Make it based upon how well they can incorporate the principles you teach into their albums. Layouts usually take an average of an hour to complete. Some longer, some shorter. I would allow this as a minimum for beginners of high school age. Say, they should have at least one layout done and another started for every two class periods. They will get faster as they do it longer. I can think of a few different ways you could teach it. You could 1)demonstrate one technique and give students a class period or two to create their own layout using that method. 2)You could demonstrate all of them, say one or two per day for a week, giving them handouts and showing examples, and the next week they can work on layouts using whichever techniques they want to try. If you don't have adequate light, buy lights. No substitute for giving the plans the light they need. Nothing else can compensate.

I've often thought of what kind of "kit" I'd get for any friend starting out with orchids, especially in a greenhouse. Number one on the tool list would be fingernails! Of which I rarely have.

Good tweezers, pair of good poultry shears, the sturdiest cuticle scissors you can find, good disinfecting product/method, notebook and pencil if you keep track of your orchids' doings, small watering can, sealed bags of different kinds of potting media, lots of bamboo skewers (like for kebabs) in different sizes, lots of twist ties (preferably in the 8"-12" range), lots of green bamboo stakes and/or metal stakes, supply of new or disinfected plastic and clay pots, sprays for fungus and bug control.

Other items (lights, fans, humidity units, heating, cooling) depend on your growing area and conditions.

Experiment, experiment! If a plant is unhappy in one area, try a different area, or media, or pot, or watering/feeding schedule.

I have more gadgets in the GH than I do in my kitchen! LOL!

I took a quick look in my orchid shoebox in the laundry rm. All of the following are NECESSARY to EFFECTIVELY grow orchids the way that I WANT. Items not covered in previous posts:

curved hemostats (2 sizes) are great for nabbing both animate (pests--esp bush snails, centipedes, insects!) and inanimate "things" (seeds, "trash", etc) that don't belong deep in leaves

hand held magnifying glass

super glue for mounting

labels

string of various types

cotton tipped applicators

small, "model" sized paintbrushes

old toothbrush

flashlight

rubber bands

old pill vials for captured pests to ID later

A good #2 pencil for writing on labels.
A few spray bottles, one for fertilizer, one for insecticide, one for plain water.

:) Well, on seeing all these excellent replies, I can see I overlooked a lot of things I do just have to have. They've covered most of it, but I'd like to add a few more things to that medicine dropper ...

Trifocals with 500 magnification, and lots of bright light to work in are definitely needed if you're over 50, well say over 60. Forget the lights for plants here, this is light to see by. I've been thinking about that magnifying glass Stitz mentioned, but haven't popped for it yet, since I'm sure it would have hidden itself somewhere any time I needed it.

Your own personal sink so you can have all the water you need without bumping into people or waiting for them to move out of your way when you're in a hurry. And space to leave stuff spread around in. Untouched by anyone else!!!

Burning holes in plastic pots with a soldering iron is a really useful task. Orchids do appreciate the extra holes, as Mr. B says. However, I only found out I needed that this summer.

A propane torch makes quick work of sterilizing tools. You do have to find a place for it where little hands can't find it, and you may have to persuade someone you won't be using to set fire to anything, honest, etc etc. But it's indispensable. (And haven't burned myself yet)

A broom and dustpan of your very own-- you'll be using it often to clean up messes nearly everywhere. And a big thirsty dog towel for when the bucket handle breaks or the water can jumps out of your hand.

LOL. Even the messes are fun, smittee.
