need complete instructions for LLSPC

I have been scouring the endless posts relating to Linda Lou's sweet pickle chunks recipe. I brought a small harvest in today and would like so much to try this recipe. can some kind soul post or tell me how to go directly to her recipe? All the dozens of posts I've read only tell it in part. 2 questions:

Is there a popular recipe forum to look up these great recipes?

and, if I don't have enough for a full batch can I still successfully do these?

I don't know how to copy the text but if you do a search under "Linda Lou's pickles", you will find the recipe under "Linda Lou's sweet pickles, a question". It was posted by dgkritch on July 16, 2007. Hope this helps.

Sweet pickle chunks (as posted by Linda Lou)

Pour boiling water over 24 pickling cukes for 4 days. On 5th day, drain, add this syrup.Cut cukes in chunks.
8 cups sugar
4 cups cider vinegar 5% acidity
3 1/2 tsp. pickling and canning salt
2 Tbsp. pickling spices, tied in a bag.
Drain and heat syrup for 3 more days.(It is the same batch of syrup, just drain and reheat.I get lots of questions about that part.) On 4th day, pack pickles into jars, seal with lid. Process in water bath canner for 10 minutes.
I love these with tuna!

I leave all my Aloes in my garage all winter long (Dec-Jan-Feb). There is practically no light, and it stays cold (mid 30's to mid 50's F). They all handle it perfectly. I can't think of any reason why all Aloe species would not do equally well. As soon as temps are suitable in the spring, they go outside, usually by mid March. Sunburn is an issue only on warm days, so acclimate accordingly. October seems a little early to start bringing plants inside: when is your first frost? I easily keep my Aloes outdoors until Thanksgiving. The point you raise about keeping the rootlets alive is an excellent one. The soil mix ideally should not dry out completely. A light watering once a month during cold weather dormancy will not harm a healthy plant grown in a porous mix. I use lots of Turface, which being a clay, has excellent water holding capacity. This helps keep feeder roots alive because there is always some moisture present. Peat, for many reasons, is a substrate that should be avoided especially in your case. I have never grown polyphylla from seed, but I would imagine you should try to keep it somewhere warmer indoors with as much light as possible for the first winter. It may not be big enough to handle the cold drought. Come the following spring, grow it on and by the following winter it should be able to deal with the winter. UV light apparently is needed to maintain the tight spiral so it must be grown outdoors as much as possible. If your summers get hot regularly (temps above the high 80's F) then polyphylla might be a challenge. Absolutely submerge the pot into the garden soil, and use cold water to keep the roots cool. x

Jeanne...would Leaf Grow (a composted leaf product available in my area) work as compost? I was really asking about the miracle grow for outdoor container plants. I understand that watering them causes the nutrients to wash out of the pot so its a good idead to add a fertilize every few weeks. buyorsell...I garaged mine in a windowless garage and they did great...grew and developed lots of big buds over winter. Someone on here told me it wasn't necessary. Someone else suggested digging a hole and buring the pot in the ground with some sort of mulch on top for insulation. Another person suggested that if I moved them close to my house and covered them with burlap/bubblewrap on the top and outward facing side of the pot, they would stay warm enough. I decided to be safe and bring them in. ;)

Pomegrantes are pretty easy according to my friend Lost Man. I think they need well draining soil so you need to dig deep and break up the hard pan below and add copious amounts of ammendments to your soil. Woodlands soil, compost and permatil should get you going pretty well (or you can just buy it all mixed up in CLM - Complete Landscape Mix). If you have access to some small chunks of concrete like a few inches around, I'd throw one or two of those in the hole because they will leach lime into the soil and help equalize the acidity of the clay nicely. Then you never have to add lime. You will need to dig your holes very deep and wide and make sure there is clay in that soil. You want to ammend what is in the planting hole, not replace it. Your poms need full sun. As much sun as you can give them! GGG

Memory Ornaments - Need detailed instructions and tips

I have the Carol Duvall segment where she demonstrated the memory ornaments and I liked the one that looked like a floating photo. It's only going to be wrapped loosely around a pencil long enough to stick it into the globe. The helmet shouldn't be a problem. Her tip: Don't cut the photograph or acetate until you've tried your circle out with scrap paper. Simply cut a hole in the center of a little square of paper. Put it over the ornament and see if the paper rests like a perfectly fitting skirt on the center of the globe. If the ornament slips through the hole in the paper... the hole is obviously too big... if the paper sits higher than center... it's too small. It really does need to be just right for the pictures/acetate to rest perfectly inside the globe. But once you get it right you have the perfect stencil for the rest of your ornaments. When we made them we used sepia tone photographs photocopied onto the rough side of transparencies. We used a laser printer. We then decorated the tops of the glass balls to look Victorian. They were very elegant. My favorite is of my granddaughter's first Christmas... I put a lock of her hair in the globe along with the little beaded bracelet she was wearing in the photo. I sealed the opening so it wouldn't fall out when stored. They're VERY easy to make. Have fun :)

There is a SEARCH engine at the bottom of the main HARVEST page posts here. Type in the words for the recipe your looking for and it will give you MANY threads. We can't always spoon feed everyone here. Retyping in a recipe that exists here many times from way back in 2005 may still be found easily when doing a simple few key words in a search box. It takes seconds to find, and hours to sift through the thousands or posts, unless you have a 'find in page' option in your web browser. If you use that for the same or similar key words, they will one by one be highlighted for you to read through. Hope this SIMPLE SEARCH TIP helps!

ken, AS I SAID, I have read dozens of posts looking for the recipe. For you to insinuate otherwise, either means you did not bother to fully read my post, In which case you should have also not bothered to post on it, or you feel some need to insult someone looking for the VERY popular pickle recipe of Linda's. Either way, as the old saying goes "If you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all."
I, like many newbies on this forum have never made pickles before and did not want to start with so many questions unanswered. This is apparently not so unusual or there wouldn't be so many posts to read through with additional comments, questions and clarifications. As I am sure you are aware, many, many, many, posts came up, which I spent much time going through. I wanted the actual recipe in total so I could make a good effort my first time making pickles. Thank Goodness a few GENEROUS people understood my question and choose to be KIND, even though they may have answered a question dozens of times, they are still willing to help out. Without insults and cutting remarks! so no, since you did ask, not only were you NOT helpful, you posted in a way that does no justice to this wonderful sight.

I wasn't trying to be unfriendly. Its just that the same questions are asked repeatedly and when newbees come here and want all the full directions for a specific recipe, its almost a daunting task to find even the basic recipe. Many times typos can exist, and people have commented that they find adding or useing less of an ingredient gives a better result. To simply ask for a full length recipe in the Harvest forum is something that no one here as the power to compile, unless each and every single subject is cross referenced and filed in such a manner that it all seems to be contained in one big ball of words. Halving or quartering a batch of pickles is easy, simply make a smaller batch of the necessary brines, using a smaller amount of ingredients. One thing, jellies with pectin must NOT be doubled. as they can fail to set.

Dare I go on? A simple 3 word search has brought up the same recipe i several links. I'm not trying to be a tough person here, only someone who respects LInda Lou and her continual major efforts to help anyone with a common question regarding a quite simple process of making a pickle. I do not speed read well, and after spending about 6 hours here every single day, I see the same things over and over again daily. It doesn't take long to compile the list of links above, only about two hours of my precious time. But for anyone to sift through all these and note any negatives or positives will be something only the end reader can decide on. Insinuations are sometimes necesary. Please note your subject TITLE? "NEED COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS OF LLSPC". Thats almost like demanding to be spoonfed, like I stated before. I am not targeting any individual here. Only trying to make everyone get along with their projects. I do not get paid to provide my efforts, so insults do not bother me at all. I can simply go away, and leave here forever and not waste my time with some tiny bits of ignorance happening. Generosity works BOTH ways. You, as a newbee are also encouraged to do some basic search work, as I just showed you above. It has given me almost everything I need to know about that single sweet pickle chunk recipe and more. Aside from buying a canner, the tools, the jars, accessories, ingredients, we cant give you much more beyond that. This is will be my last post in this thread, thanks to your defending nature. BYE!

I hope all goes well with your first try at these pickles. I have been making these for 50 years and they are a must have. I use pickles especially hybridized for making pickles. The skins are much more tender and the seeds are very small, unlike a salad cucumber. Super fresh is a must. When I make these, I use pickles about 4 inches or less and the volume is about 1 gallon.

While you stated you weren't trying to be unfriendly, you certainly were.

This site is a continual, ongoing site with new people joining daily and while you may spend hours on the site and have been here for who knows how long, it does not give you the right to offend people who have a simple question. If it is a repeated question, how is the newbie to know? It is only fair to respond with kindness and respect. Your answer was enough to run some newbies off with their tail tucked between their legs wondering "Why did I ask?" Luckily Cateyanne didn't do that.

It would do you well to take some basic communication classes in how to deal with people. You seem to have a condescending attitude which is certainly not helpful to people who come here for comradre and assistance. I hope that the next time a question comes up that you have seen numerous times before you put the brain in gear before you chose to lash out at someone with your "spoon fed" commments.

I don't have the name on the pickle however, I'll be sure to ask the gentleman at the market. I asked last week how long before they are ready and he said this week. He harvests pickles until late September. I will wait till later in the season. I loved the pickles as the seeds were very small. In fact, I could barely see them. If you have a choice planting your own, I would suggest a spineless type pickle. They are much easier to clean.

I am very excited to be trying these! I LOVE pickles and have always wanted to make my own. I had a German great grandmother who made wonderful pickles, but she died when I was very young and she never shared her "secret" to crispy pickles. She made all kinds, but her B&B's and Sweets were my favorite. My dear mother tried many times to make pickles, but alas they were always soft, so apparently it is not such an easy thing to master!

We don't eat too many sweet pickles (big DILL fan here), but when I do, these are the ones!!

You know, when I am too busy to answer a question here, I just don't. Nobody "requires" us to spend ANY time here.
Yes, some questions get asked frequently. THANK GOODNESS more people are wanting to learn. That's how the art and skills of canning/preserving are maintained and passed down. I know I've asked my share, even as someone involved with canning for 20+ years. Science reveals new information, new recipes are created/posted, etc.

I also don't leave if somebody seems to be having a bad day. We all do! I just figure I have the choice to read the posts or not, to be offended, or not. I (almost) always choose not....it makes ME feel bad. Scrolling on by is beautiful!! LOL

Good luck with the pickles. Read the whole recipe...it takes 8 days, but definitely worth it!

Fortunately, several nice folks guided me in the right direction(s).
One thing I learned from Carol (readinglady), you can find a lot more things by using Google to search ...

This recipe sounds so good so I went to the farmers market today and ordered 5# of pickling cukes. I told the farmer that they need to be really fresh and he promised to pick them the night before. Wish me luck...I have never made pickles before, nor am I an experienced canner.

Have you all heard about the businessman who succeeded because he told his employees to give the customers the pickle?

I'm on my second day of Linda's pickles! sister and mom stopped over and are very interested! I hope these turn out! I didn't plant that many this year, because I usually have way too many. If (When) these turn out I'm going to have to find a source and get me more!

You'll probably find that after about the 3rd or 4th day once they're in the syrup, the quantity diminishes too...............from sampling.

Remember, it's ALL about quality control!! LOL
