Lots of Help Please

Hello Everyone, new poster here.

I am going to get some pictures to help with any advice up later tonight. I am just so lost with this thing, I came from North Dakota and if you had a pond it would freeze solid in the winter, to Idaho where the top barely had ice on it.

Dimensions are roughly 4.5 feet wide by 7 feet long and it goes from 4 inches on one end to about 2.5-3 feet deep at the deepest.

We bought a house last August and are having some problems with our pond this year. The first issue I discovered is 3 big holes in the pond. I believe the previous owners dog played in it and tore the liner. I have this handled, I am getting my EPDM primer so I can put patches over the tears with double sided tape. I also might put the 6" tape over the edges just for extra measure.

My next issue was the water quality. After reading these forums I have decided to remove the rocks from the bottom of the pond and just have the liner there. My concern with this is starting this week we have 10 straight days of 95+ degree weather and it will be like that for 2 months easily, how do I stop the fish from cooking in there? Should I put a shade over it for this year and next year plant lilly pads? Any advice here will help greatly.

The next issue I have is they had a sumpump plugged in for aeration. I have been reading about Skimmers and Pumps now for awhile and am trying to figure out how they all work, it is very confusing. I should also mention there is a waterfall feature so I would like to get something that I can plug into there as well if the desire comes up to have the waterfall running.

The waterfall is an issue for another day, supposedly it leaks but who knows since the people before us did not even know about the tears. My first priority is getting the fish back into the pond with the rocks out, and then finding a pump/skimmer.

I also have some general questions, without rocks am i supposed to be feeding the fish in the pond? How much and how often?

What does an air stone do, does it just spray water into the air and circulate it?

How many fish is a good number in the pond, how many is to many?(Dimensions Coming)

We really appreciate any help and I am sure as I solve these issues many more will arise.

I have to admit that I have always been worried about dogs tearing up my pond but my dogs have never jumped in. My concern for you is how you would know whether you have found all tears. It might be a pain and an expense, but adding a second liner might be a solution.

Many of us don't have rocks in the bottom of our ponds (I don't), and our fish aren't baked. It will be in the 90's here and my fish are fine. Part of my pond is 3 feet deep. I suspect that it helps. It is not clear to me that rocks would do anything to keep fish cool anyway.

I suppose you should follow the feeding directions on the food container. You haven't mentioned how many fish are in your pond now or their size. My pond is a little bigger than yours and I only have goldfish. I probably have 18 or so having started with three. I think new eggs get eaten. If you have fish in there now, that is probably the right number.

I don't quite understand how no one noticed the big leaks before. How fast was the water going down; does it stop at some level? I suppose that there are other useful sites here, but I used a long post by cliffandjoann about how their pond is set up as an introduction to fancy plumbing and filtering.

To find the leaks I removed all the rocks from the edges and worked my way around the pond after letting the water sit for 2 months. I found where the water level stopped dropping and then could tell any less water was evaporation. Now once I have the liner clean and patched I can fill it with water again and I will know if anything still leaks.

Now after removing 90% of the big rocks I find that the liner has spots where it looks like things are sticking out and about to pop through, not what I wanted to find but I will be able to at least pull it up and remove those things.

What a stressful feature in a yard. If it was not for the 15 foot waterfall I would probably be taking the whole thing out.

I've taken animals to wildcare before but now I live 80+ miles away and can't get it to the animal shelter before 4pm and probably not to noble before 7pm. That's what sucks. I've been donating to them for over 15 years great place. Oh Paula my week started worse than that. At 2am my cat brought a ripped apart rat in and got guts all over me and woke me up. She's the deadliest cat I've ever had. That's why I don't know if there's a place safe to put it outside heck I've seen her on the roof of the house. my giant windmill got damaged and no longer stands I'm clueless. Do baby robins eat bird seed? I can feed it if they do till I can make it to Noble. Tree

John, Your original post "the entire bin was full of worms in the entire thing, no simple dry/moist castings. all throughout the entire bin WET mess. obviously not enought paper or cardboard scraps to keep the moisture in check." I use stacking tray type bins and feed in thin layers every week. When I feed I first lay down a thin layer of damp, fluffy machine shredded paper, a thin layer of blenderized veggies/fruits, and then another layer of shredded paper about a 1/2" thick. I check the "dryness" of the paper a couple times weekly and mist if dry. I haven't had a moisture problem in a long time. When I feed, I also gently stir the bedding just under the surface and it is always turning to castings-it's also teeming with worms. I checked the bottom tray a week ago and it, too, was full of worms and "wet" castings, ready to harvest. Once, when I harvested the bottom tray of castings, I just lifted all the trays up, supported on boards laying across the collection tray, and allowed the castings to dry "slowly". The dryness forced all but 2 worms up into the more moist areas, and by doing it slowly, the cocoons had a chance to hatch and move up (at least I didn't see any when I sifted). I now isolate the castings, allow to dry slowly, but keep a small sieve buried in the center of the bin and this I keep moist and feed cornmeal. The worms flock to the damp seive and all I have to sort is about 4 cups of bedding. I will do this until I'm not getting anymore baby worms, maybe 4 to 6 weeks. I then bag the casts for later use. To check for unprocessed O.M., Kelly says to bag 'em and sniff in a week or so. Processed casts smell earthy and O.M. "doesn't". Chatty this morning, aren't I?? Guess I'm just trying to fill up an empty forum, single handidly!! Besides, if I tell dirty jokes, Kelly makes me stand in the corner!! I agree with the previous posters. The faux wood garage doors would look nice. I LOVE your front door, very classy! I notice you have 2 large urns you could place on the driveway near the garage doors to add depth and color, I'd use black urns with bright flower colors if you keep the doors, taupe or white if you change them. Same goes for widening your flower area along the driveway and give it some curve. You could add something that stays green in the winter since you get snow in Chicago. Try adding something between your daylilies, every 2nd one put in a shrub that has great fall color and summer flowers to compliment the color of the daylilies : ) You could add a mounded & curved bed to the left (in the open grass space) with a taller flowering tree/shrub and some perennials that flower at different stages. A dogwood or ninebark in the corner near the front window and entrance would look nice since they have nice winter color, great summer green and pretty fall leaves : ) Does the tree at the end corner have flowers, berries or interesting leaves? It seems to have some good height. Do you like clematis? That would look nice on that corner too, both sides. Your house and yard are great! A bit of curves and color is all it should take.

Who says neutral has to be colorless? Who says only beiges and browns are neutrals? IMO almost anything that comes from the earth is neutral. That means all granites and all wood tones, as long as they are not painted, are neutral. This includes deep reds, greens, yellows, golds and purple (amethyst). I did my kitchen in dark cherry stain and peacock green granite, which has bursts of green, gold and black. The knobs and pulls are ORB. The nearby family room has dark brown leather sofas, dark cherry wall unit and matching tables. BUT... there are large bright green throw pillows, a huge multi-colored abstract painting on the wall with burgundy, green, gold, black and silver, and there are sage green curtains. Lots of color, yet it's all neutral, expecially the big ticket items. I can change the color scheme by changing the wall hangings, pillows and curtains. Also, the furniture and cabinets are traditional style, yet the wall coverings, pillows and lamps are contemporary-and it all works beautifully! Start thinking "out-of-the-box" and don't be afraid of color. Just be careful when considering pastels, like pinks, blues and oranges, which aren't necessarily neutral

You can make a water garden out of it and you won't need a filter at all.
The waterfall will also provide plenty of oxegen for the plants.
You don't have to have fish in the pond. It will still be beautiful and there are so many plants that love full sun that bloom, you really won't miss the fish anyway.
Just a suggestion.
Buy plants that will come back every year also, that way you won't have to keep buying them and they will get bigger every year.
Find a pond store near your home, ask questions, they will explain everything to you.
