I am just wondering

I already ordered annual poppy seeds but my problem is part of the garden where I want sow popppy seeds has many large tree roots under the ground.

I want to remove all large roots but it is very hard work.

I wonder if it is good idea to cover the area where I want to sow poppy seeds with top soil or not.

If I decided to do this, how deeply do I need to cover with top soil?

How deep roots of annual poppy plant are?

All tree roots are only about 4 inches below the ground therefore only shallo rooted plants can survive.

What about trees themselves? If you have trees, covering roots to high might kill the trees. If there are old tree roots but no trees left- you can plant you poppies with or without adding more soil.

lindalana, last year we called tree service people and let them cut down huge tree but still we have stump and large many roots running under the ground about 3 inches below surface.
Only 3 inches deep soil is enough to grow poppies?

We never freeze here, and have winter days up into the 60's, so any moisture in a pot while they are dormant makes them a real brewing ground for rot. When I was new at this, I just left them in the rain for the first 3 years I grew them and didn't worry. They did fine! Then one wet winter 1/2 my 90 pots rotted. In UT, I imagine once things get frozen they don't thaw till Spring. It is the freezing/thawing/freezing/thawing that often messes them up. The rules are just guidelines. Be happy you have conditions that allow you to grow hostas so easily. Be wary, tho, only your most prized, most expensive ones will bite the dust. -Babka

Native plant gardens usually have a very different aesthetic than traditional gardens. My feeling is that traditional gardens are designed to look good from far away, but don't usually offer much to keep your interest in proximity. This is because the distance-appeal is based on uniformity. Disordered native plant gardening, on the other hand, generally looks a bit chaotic and cluttered from far away, but offers a whole lot more to keep your interest close up because there is greater variety. It depends on what you want. If you decide you want the neat rows, lack of variety, and whatnot, you can accomplish that with native plants. That's not what most people tend to do, though. We inherited a Kohler Heartland cast iron sink when we bought the house and I love it. I decided to keep it when we changed out the countertops and I had the undercount sink in our other home and this one has A lot of room inside. When I need to clean it I use Mrs. Meyers llama purpose cleaner, baking soda scrub, or the vinegar scrub. It’s holds up very well. Most of the time I just use Dawn detergent. Good luck! If you are worried Joseph Joseph makes some fun tubs with a drain you can wash or dry your items in but you still have to clean those really well at times.

yes, if there are roots but no trees, you can go ahead and plant your annuals. They do not need established root system to live long as they set for one cycle. Now if you want to garden in that area permanently you might want to consider Lasagna bed/ just Google that name and you will understand what that means/

How about the poppies in a container sitting on top of the tree stump? And maybe some ground cover around the tree roots?

Anewgarden, I like idea of poppies in a container sitting on top of the tree stump.
Last year, I planted multiple colored petunia plants in large planting continer and put on tree stump.

Do you know most Japanese people who are raised and educated in Japan have difficulty of pronouncing letter L?
Yes, still cannot pronounce L sound.

Yes, I sure DO know that Japanese people have a hard time with the "L" sound!
They usually don't like the "R" sound either.
I was born in Philadelphia! I grew up at 23rd and Pine Streets. Near Fitler Square Park. Now I live in New York.
Are you downtown? There are many lovely gardens near the Art Museum. Have you been there in the Spring?
