BS & CC users: How do YOU clean your cast iron grates?
Comments (9)Like mojavean states, the grates are coated with a porcelain enamel, almost a glass like substance. It will wear, and it might be susceptible to attack by "some" of the stronger dishwashing detergents that have potassium or sodium hydroxide in them. I quote one sentence from Wikipedia under the topic 'dishwasher'-"glass dissolves slowly in alkaline aqueous solution."... you can read the article yourself. I mentioned before, it's like the porcelain coating on French cast iron ovens, such as Le Creuset and Staub. Having said that, it would probably take years to have much of an effect. Still, I would rather have the bottom of my pans wear out this coating. The grates will take a seasoning, you just wipe them with the smallest amount of oil, and turn the burner back on. Some oils smoke less than others, refined light olive oil is good, this seasoning may burn off and stick to the bottom of your expensive copper pan, especially if it's a fresh seasoning....otherwise, not a problem, and in fact it probably protects the porcelain from wear. The big thing with cast iron, even porcelain cast iron, is to keep it dry. Sometimes you'll see a light 'bloom' of rust on it, just wipe it off. But if rust gets under the porcelain, it will lift it off and chip it. To clean, I use an almost dry scrubby sponge, and leave the bowls on the cooktop. If I spill a mess of flour, or manage to make a complete mess, I do take the bowls to the sink and rinse them there....See MoreHow do I remove a cast iron sink without damaging counter?
Comments (23)Thanks everyone. You all have good ideas here. I suggested to my husband that we call the manufacturer, but he doesn't want ANYTHING to do with them anymore. He is afraid that they'll send some unqualified person out to do the job, they'll mess up the counter, and our kitchen won't be finished for another 6 weeks while we wait for the new counter to come and be installed... we've done this whole kitchen ourselves and it's taken 10 months because my husband is very anal and very thorough... I think with your suggestions, we can hopefully get this sink out ourselves without damaging the counter. But I might call and try to talk to Whirlpool or Menards anyhow... the easiest thing would be for us to get this out ourselves and return it to Menards... but maybe not the smartest thing. We'll have to think this over. I'm 5 months pregnant and we need to get this kitchen DONE so we can redo the laundry room before baby comes. I will also put tape all over the outside of the enamel so as it continues to pop off, hopefully the tape will prevent it from flying and injuring someone. I didn't consider further breakage of the enamel - that was a good point. And leather gloves for all. I do know one thing for sure: the replacement sink will be Kohler. *sigh* I'll keep you all posted. I appreciate all your insights and tips....See MoreDo I need a sink rack in a cast iron prep sink?
Comments (4)Don't need it. Okay, I've never HAD a rack in anything but I do see the point, especially for a cleanup sink. The prep sink will have carrot peels and chicken sludge in it. It'll be easier to keep clean without a rack and you won't have pots banging around in it that require sink protection. (If you are accustomed to using a rack and can't imagine not having one, though, get a different sink.) You might want a colander type thing that drapes over the sink; I use one because I wouldn't want my clean stuff at the bottom of the sink because...well, it's just different. :P...See MoreUse pumice on enameled cast iron bathtub?
Comments (12)Exactly, Chispa. The tub is enamel coated cast iron. Toilet is something else even tho' the look the same. I called Kohler, and they said to follow their directions running the tub with bleach and dishwasher detergent. I did that to no effect. I tried Lime Away and CLR, and the Kohler lady said I shouldn't have done that. I used great caution with those products, so no harm done there. She said I could use vinegar and it would not harm the bottom either. I'll try that, and I know there is a stronger vinegar for cleaning, but I'm not sure where to get it....See Morejulieste
