Chaya from seed

Can anyone give me germinating tips for growing chaya from seed?I can't find much info on growing it from seed.Thanks in advance..Debbie

I am looking for chaya seeds.Cuttings would probably work, also;they are so hardy,a little trip via UPS probably wouldn't hurt. Anyone w/ any to spare,sell,or trade, please let me know. We discovered chaya while traveling in Mexico & find it difficult to believe it is not to be found here in South Texas!

Does anyone know if these are self pollinating? I have a small Chaya that's about to bloom and was wondering if I'd be able to get any viable seed.

Yes, Nova and many thanks! Let me look around for a few things to send to you. Do you have any epis? I have a lovely shell pink one and another which is a violent magenta purple. The others haven't bloomed, yet. Also, I am rooting roses like mad....Lol D'Ann, TIA is thanks in advance. I am looking for more food crops. Everything I buy now goes through my mind like this..."That's two gallons and that is one and a half gallons... Maybe I'll just put that money in the gas tank, instead...." I would love to know what anyone thinks of the taste of chaya. I love my veggies, esp greens, but I just can't do that malabar spinach. It is just too rich and mucilaginous for my taste. Veronica

I think we had a mini twister in the backyard along with a lot of rain. My chaya against the fence fell right over. I gave it a BIG haircut and staked it up. I'm sure it will be ok. I think it would bloom more if it was in more sun? I was going to start some cuttings but got overwhelmed by all the other stuff I wanted to get done in the yard :-(

I have grown chaya for years! I got my original plant as a cutting from a generous GW member. They root easily and are great for attracting butterflies. You can eat it [I haven't!] but you need to boil it twice to remove toxins. Here in Central Florida it does freeze back to the ground but comes back bigger and better each year. I really like this plant so a few cuttings go into the greenhouse every winter just in case something happens to the "mother" plant. Are you far from the Ocala area? I just happen to have one rooted plant that I started last winter that really needs a home! Let me know! Susan

Many gareners are reluctant to carry over seed potatoes from one year to the next simply because so many fungus diseases can overwinter on the stored potatoes even with proper storage. They then infect the crop and other members of the same family and the soil the following year. Late Blight, a devastating fungal disease often credited as the cause of the Great Irish Potato Famine and the cause of several crop failures in the past decade is one of the most common problems. Sadly the disease symptoms may not be apparent this year but burst into full bloom the following year. That is why buying fresh, treated seed potatoes each year is so highly recommended. Some report successful storage by treating their stored potatoes with a good dusting of one of powdered fungicides or sulfa but research still doesn't recommend it. Just some thoughts to consider. I suggest you plant the seeds and wait to see if they germinate. That is what I plan to do with mine.

I have some CHAYA (Cnidoscolus chayamansa) PLANTS, they have beautiful white flowers. I have many family members and friends with diabetes, Since I have a huge backyard, I decided to grow many plants (about 15).

I mostly grow medicinal plants, this chaya is one of the most promising.

I have some relatives that are healthy and they love making chaya drink. Every time I visit I bring a bag of leaves.
