Thanks folks for all your good advice. Brooke, I have tried your idea with baskets and that works fine with plants growing horizontally. I had a lot of old cedarwood blinds with slats about one inch and a quarter wide and a half inch thick. Taken to bits the slats made excellent shallow baskets to custom sizes. I could make a shallow bed of bark and chopped coconut fibre place the mount on top and fill in around the edges. Perfect, the plants have grown on well and love it. My problem is with plants hanging vertically, can't use that method cos all the compost would drop out! Clara you are so right, I could make a ladder arrangement with my slats and simply place the existing mount onto that. They could then be sprayed with water and fertilizer and would I know grow well. However what is attractive about my existing mounts which get dunked in rainwater at GH temp.is that they get covered in a layer of a very fine and attractive moss which of course sets the plants off beautifully and makes me think I am in a rain forest somewhere. That is why I want to try and find a thin attractive layer of something for the moss to grow on and which won't drop off. Thanks Arthurm for your suggestions, the plants I grow vertically and which do so well mounted are the smaller Phalaenopsis species, like Lindeni, Ang. compactum, Aer. modesta, Neofenetia falcata, Amesiella philippinensis, Dend delacourii and plants of this sort of size. Hummmm, I've had my Washlet since Dec of last year. I know your options are limited but I'd find it quite inconvenient to have it mounted low or inside the vanity door (or both) You'll find that there's more to it than just pushing one button once per use. Given the options I see in your picture and knowing what I know having used it for 10 months, I'd opt to NOT mount the remote at all. My mother doesn't have any workable options either. Hers is just laying on the back of the toilet or on a 2 tiered shelf that her reading glasses and Bible rest on in front of the toilet. In case you're considering it, mounting it to the wall behind you wouldn't be convenient either. The remote is light weight (maybe 1/2 lb). It's made to easily come off the wall so you can replace the batteries yet it's still very solid/stable against the wall. I just couldn't tell you how long the screws are. You could download the manual and it might tell you or call Toto. Here's a picture of the plate the remote mounts to. And here is the extended menu. I really don't think you'd like it mounted inside the vanity.

Mounting orchids is a simple process. First, I would suggest applying the hanger to your mounting material. Most people make hangers for the mounts from wire. The most common wire used is the wire used for hanging suspended ceilings, but any strong, yet flexible wire may be used. One method is to bend the wire into a u shape, and then hammer the wire into the mount. The other method is to drill a hole or two and thread it through the mount. Making a tag with a hole and threading it onto the hanger is a wise thing to do to identify the plant. A tag made from Tyvek scraps and permanent marker may be used if you dont have any fancier material. Orchids to be mounted are placed on the mounting material which has been soaked in water (I like to leave it over night). Some people put a pad of good quality sphagnum moss on the mount then place the roots on top of itallowing the roots to spread first into the sphag. Before it goes into the mount thereby helping it get established. Others prefer to place the plant directly on the mount, or to put the sphag pad on the outside. The plant is then tied into the mount, by wrapping monofilament (fishing line), twist tie, or panty hose around the roots. Once the plants roots have grown into the mount, the line, twist ties, or panty hose is removed. Tree fern plaques (or slabs), and cork bark are probably the most commonly used mounting material, but other materials include cactus skeletons, and rough driftwood (both of which may be purchased at pet stores as they are used for reptiles). Some people like to use slabs of wood with bark attachedsuch as live oak or fir. Fresh water driftwood may be used, but driftwood from saltwater bodies must be washed to remove the salt. Using Physan to kill any bad things on collected mounts is also a good idea. Driftwood as a whole may not be the best material as orchids like to have a somewhat rough surface to grow into. One grower uses paint sticks for some of his smaller mounts. Tree fern slabs are probably the most quickly drying. Vary your mounting material to the plants needs. Plants needing a quicker dry-out should be mounted on a more porous material and the sphagnum or coir pad may be skipped.

Thanks for your comments Bill. I think you're probably right that putting a heavy orchid in the side areas of the fern probably would result in it eventually dropping out. I'm thinking, though, that I have a number of pretty deep "basins" that are more or less on top of large masses in the fern "colony" that an orchid might fit into nicely. Since the whole dense mass takes 2 to 3 large strong guys to move it, I think its got enough heft to support them upright. The stag horn itself is not mounted on anything-- it long ago outgrew anything I could put it on (my whole fence would come down) so it sits on a bed of bark sort of leaning up against the magnolia, but since it's base is about 4' deep, it pretty much stands up by itself. You can still see a tiny corner of the original 1 x 12 board we mounted it on originally, deep down in the back. Ah, yes... the "why?" of the matter. Well, for one thing, I just thought some color would be pretty occasionally in that large dark green area --I had some impatiens balfourii (sometimes known as "poor man's orchid" ;-) ) that shot some seeds in there a few years ago and they were a beautiful surprise to find dancing above the fern fronds the next season. Also, I have a really hard time getting my orchids to re-bloom here in San Diego, except for the ones that I have outside. I never had a problem in SF, but down here my luck is bad with orchids in the house. The outdoor ones re-bloom beautifully, but their leaves are pretty much a raggedy chewed mess, since everything seems to like to munch on them and I thought that if took some of my stubborn indoor guys out and plonked them outside into the stag horn they might a) re-bloom and b) not have their inevitably scroungy leaves look so obvious.
