am i doing the right thing? winter behavior

hello all, i have a baby Ebb Tide and Hot Cocoa which are about a foot tall and are still in their small shipping containers. they were outside but i moved them in two days ago since its getting really cold in dallas. i went to check on them today, and low an behold they both are sprouting leaves on their canes. i have them in a window so they get good sunlight. the temp in the house is around 70 degrees. Am i causing them to think its spring? and if so am i messing up their seasonal schedule? I plan to plant them in the spring. Hot Cocoa was shipped with an actual bud opening and its the most beautiful color of smokey red. i dont want anything to happen to these babies!!! advice please. should i put them back out so they are in tuned with the correct season??

If you bring them inside, usually you want to keep them in an unheated garage or basement so they stay dormant. The danger is if they put out a lot of new growth and you then put them outside or plant them, and we get more cold weather, the new growth will be damaged by the cold.

I have a few potted roses which I brought in the garage tonight because it's supposed to be very cold tonight, but I will probably put them back outside as soon as possible.

I also have some roses in the ground that have leaves sprouting, so it's hard to control. I think you either have to put them back out as soon as possible, or keep them indoors until the danger of frost is past.

Are these bare-root dormant plants? Or are they own-roots in small containers?
If they are bare-root dormant plants, it sounds like all that light and warmth has caused them to break dormancy.

Thanks Ann! So great to hear from you. I have LOTS of oak leaves, I chop 'em up with the mower and compost them or use them for mulch or start new beds with them over newspapers and cardboard all over the gardens. And with all the leaves I have I still get composted leaves from the city to mulch all my bed both spring and fall, I've got some coming this week. So you could say I'm a big fan of composted leaves, and so are my gardens! I've never given spireas their props, too many memories of suburbia in the 60s, but they truly are workhorses in the garden. I only have one "Lemon Princess" in amongst a foundation planting. They used to be the darlings of the gas stations and malls of middle America but I guess have been replaced with ornamental grasses and Knockout roses! BTW, the roses will have a backdrop of nandina, so I think the blooms will look great against that dark green foliage.

Well dear GW friends. Here is the final score: Black tip-1 Nicole-0 I came home from work, sterilized my surgerical tools( a very sharp blade) prepared to annihilate some black tip, only to discover that my cutting was soft like over cooked spaghetti :(. I'm devasted and disappointed. There was nothing to salvage. I appreciate all the words of wisdom and help.

If you used Round Up do not dig up the plants and you won't need a tarp. Round Up takes about 2 weeks to work, it moves down the leaves to the roots of the plants and the plants need to be actively growing! If you dig them up, the Round Up doesn't get a chance to work. Wait 10 days to 2 weeks, respray any green stuff with Round up, wait another 2 weeks and spray any remaining green stuff again. That should be enough. You should then put down a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (can do that about 1 week after the first application of Round Up). The mulch will help prevent new weed seeds from taking hold. About 1 week after the second application of Round Up you can plant your garden; just be careful applying Round Up for the third time so you don't get it on the new desirable plants.

I'm so sorry for what you're going through. For what it's worth, I was in a long marriage to an emotionally abusive man, and I also (now, not then) have a child with special needs. I can't imagine how you could possibly have dealt with all that you've been dealing with for as long as you have been. It has to have been intolerable. Don't worry about how you're "supposed to be feeling" -- Just go with what you do feel, and allow yourself to feel it. Give yourself permission to let go for a few days. If you're sure it's the right decision, then tell the kids that you're sad that you and their father could not be happy together (not sad you're splitting), and that it's important to allow yourself to feel sad for a few days -- But that you know it is the right decision and that you'll be happier next week. It might actually help to put a date on it -- I'm going to allow myself to be sad until Friday (so they don't worry too much). Then CRY. Just hug your kids and cry, and let them cry too. Then pull yourself together after you've washed out some tears and start moving forward. You may be surprised actually behow relieved you feel. More than anything else, I felt relieved, and like I finally had a chance at reaching something good. You may be scared right now, but IME, it's much easier to have NO help than to have almost no help and lots of criticism. Clearly, you've got incredible resources, and you're going to be OK -- probably better than that.

Yes, it's ok if they don't get sunlight in the garage. Because they are dormant, they don't need sunlight. But I think your climate is like mine in that you can leave them outside most of the winter and just bring them in when we have very cold nights like now.

If one came with a bloom on it they sound like small band pots of growing own root roses and not dormant bareroot roses. If the temps are not going below freezing you can leave them outside without a problem. I never recommend keeping roses inside. They do not do well. Even in a sunny window they do not get enough sunlight and will waste energy, trying to grow now, that they will need for root growth to establish when you plant them outside later.

If it's going below freezing put them in an unheated garage or shed until it goes back above freezing. You can put them out during the day and just put them the garage at night too. It's a hassle but these sound small enough not to be too hard to move in and out.
