First case of black tip...am I doing the right thing?

Hello All,

I'm hoping for some help. I bought a rooted cutting of Thai Orange Splendour and about a week after it arrived the leaves fell( no biggie) but then I noticed the tip turning black. I've battled mites, slugs, snails and catapillars but never have I had black tip. I emailed the seller who told me to wipe the tip with alcohol and if that didn't work to use a fungal spray for roses.

So I isolated the plant and started immediately with the rose spray. I saw little result. So I started with alcohol I picked up the 91% strong stuff. This caused the tip to start drying and shriveling. But it still seems to be moving down the cutting.

This stuff is awful!

Am I doing the right thing? I know some say to cut the tip and others say it will dry and fall off leaving a more natural scar.

I would greatly appreciate ANY help.

return it or cut off the tip till to get to clean wood.

is it outside? is it in full or part sun? do you spray the plumie or just water the soil?

Houston- the seller(a reputable one I might add) never offered me a return option. I have it in a protected area under a shade cloth as my temps even today were 109*. I sprayed just the tip when I was using the rose spray and when I moved to alcohol I'm dousing a paper towel and rubbing just the black tip and a touch below. I'm doing this every day.

You think I should cut to clean wood?

What lamulu said. You can use rough compost. (You can bury raw compostables, for that matter.) By late spring, a lot of your compost pile is going to look like compost. (If it doesn't, use the stuff that looks closest to compost.) Anything that is completely uncomposted can be the basis of your new pile. That's how microbes get introduced to my new piles. I haven't got soil or compost to spare. It's helpful to check out the list of greens and browns, but pretty soon you're going to want to compost everything you get your hands on. So you're not going to be turning anything away, no matter what----even if your pile is top heavy in kitchen scraps---greens (the worst of the scenarios), but it shouldn't become top heavy in greens because there are tons of browns (your junk mail, your neighbors leaves). I was raised composting, as was my father, and his father before him. It's how his family managed household waste and it's how his family kept their piece of earth in good shape. Pretty soon, it's second nature to most people who take it up. It's so amazing to see your old wool sweater turn into dirt. You're doing swell, but you can't go wrong anyway. If it falls on the ground in nature, it composts---leaves, twigs, dead animals, bird droppings, a feather, a clamshell dropped by a bird, a hunk of sheep's wool, etc.---and in nature, your carbon to nitrogen ratio is often not observed. And, of course, as the beloved Professor Dirt often reminds us "It All Leads Back To Compost."

Oak, I think it's great that you had concern for the dog, but like the others, I don't think it was wise to have opened the door for a variety of reasons. You didn't know the owner or how he/she would have reacted to it;bad people drive nice cars too. You didn't know the dog or how it would react either. What if he had jumped past you or thought you were breaking in and bit you? There's just so many things that could have gone wrong. I think it would have made much better sense to either have the store use their loud speaker to call for the owner or to call the police so they could handle it. Either way the dog would have been taken care of before something tragic happened. At the very least the owner probably would have responded much nicer to a page from the store manager than to walk up to his/her vehicle to find you breaking into it. Like BusyBee said, if the owner was just running in for a few minutes he/she may have really been peeved that you made an unwarranted assumption and then broke into their car without permission. As far as taking offense when someone doesn't agree with you, what's the purpose of posting your question if you don't want someone's honest thoughts? At least the nay sayers are being honest with you. When you post in a forum setting, you leave yourself open for all to respond. If you don't want to hear everyone's opinions don't ask for them.

I agree that the alarming thing is that he went to his friend's mom with the problem. It's one thing for a 10 yo to play one parent off the other, but to turn to a third party adult is another situation entirely. Kids are told in school here that "If someone is hurting you or being mean to you, talk to a trusted adult" and if my BF's son or one of my N&Ns ever did that, I'd be very very worried. I think I'd side with with poster who said to talk to a school counselor (etc) before calling CPS, considering since you've never seen any physical signs of abuse... I personally would be hesitant to jump straight to CPS, but it DOES need to be brought to someone's attention who is trained in this sort of situation. My BF's son is 8, and he'll often tell us "Mom said I wouldn't live to see nine if I keep leaving my Lego on the stairs" (obviously she's not serious)... Last week he told me "Grandma is sooooo mean, she gave me a spanking this morning when Dad came to get me" (I asked BF about this - it was at pickup time, so he saw it - she smacked him on the butt for talking back as he walked out of the room. Perhaps not the best approach to deal with sass, but certainly not the vicious beating A__ made it out to be) I don't worry too much about that sort of thing, but I WOULD be worried if he had bruises that certainly weren't from playing soccer or tobogganing, or he told a friend's parent, or he had a large-scale freakout about going back to his mom's. You're right for being concerned about this!

I think the key is a good fabricator like you Old Ryder, and also putting aside the notion that "it may not be great but it's good enough" mentality on the fabricators part. I saw many install nightmares on GW but I didn't worry in the least about my install because I knew the fabricator's reputation for quality was good. I never dreamed that I would come home to see an awful match. I thought maybe I would think there was too much movement in the counter top but I never was worried about the quality of the job. My fabricator has a great reputation but if you remember even though the seams were straight and tight there was a really terrible match. Thankfully my KD went to bat for me and they made it right. The new match is so good that the seam is invisible towards the back. They did such a fabulous job the second time with the match that I believe they just got sloppy and decided it was good enough the first time around. If it hadn't been for GW after the fact I wouldn't have even known about book matched slabs. The saleswoman didn't mention that as an option to get a great match. When I called them the day after install all I wanted them to do was reserve another piece of that granite and I was willing to pay for it even though I shouldn't have had to. The fabricator knew immediately why I was calling so he knew it was questionable but installed it anyway. I would recommend my fabricator because in the end they made it right but I would also warn the customer to make sure that they make it clear to the fabricator that they expect a good match. I would urge all fabricators to at least educate their customers in the best way to ensure a stellar install. If that means purchasing more than one slab then the customer can decide if that is in their budget.

Nativec,

I had a plant (Lava Flow) that developed black tip. I cut the tip off and it has developed 3 new tips so although it won't bloom for me this year, I have 3 new branches and I did not loose my plant. So yes, I would cut the tip off till you get only white wood.

I would cut too!

Like Houston mentioned.. cut to clean wood. I would cut one inch below the black tip line. Clean your prunning shears after cutting.

Let it seal up naturally after a couple of hours and then i would seal it with either waterproof wood glue ( white glue) or what others use ( DAP) to prevent rot from moisture.

I also vote for cutting (ASAP)! One of my plumies got black-tip this winter, and I ended up hacking off huge sections of 2 branches because I waited too long to do something about it. There's a happy ending to this story, though, because each of these amputee limbs are now splitting into 3 or 4 new branches. My one word of advice, though, is to make SURE you get to clean wood - better to over cut than under, since the rot will continue if you don't get rid of it fully, and you'll end up cutting more the second time! (I learned this the hard way.)

I`d move it to a protected area also, you don`t want it raining into the cut tip and further rotting the plant.

I lost one to black tip last winter because I waited to cut it back. Quickly the entire thing rotted. I would cut, sterilize, cut, sterilize... etc. Good luck!

Well dear GW friends. Here is the final score:

Black tip-1 Nicole-0

I came home from work, sterilized my surgerical tools( a very sharp blade) prepared to annihilate some black tip, only to discover that my cutting was soft like over cooked spaghetti :(. I'm devasted and disappointed. There was nothing to salvage.

I appreciate all the words of wisdom and help.

Oh no!! I'm soo sorry to hear that!! What a bummer... I hope Seller can send you a replacement!

I had to send away 4 of mine to a friend to help me save them. They are currently on life support. I would be devastated too if they don't make it. :( So sorry!!

Nicole, I hope you'll contact the seller again. Since you've expressed your concerns to them already they shouldn't hesitate to replace your plant or give you a refund.

No, I turned down all of them. Have 3 exes and none with the right name so back to the maiden name. Though I was Tally A. Fish for awhile,which fit living on the coast.
