From NC State University: "Bloodroot propagation is typically done through seed or root division. Bloodroot is easily propagated by dividing the rhizomes in spring or in fall. Plants can be started indoors from seed or seed can be directly sown into the ground, but the rhizome divisions allow for a faster harvestable root." Bloodroot seeds mature in mid to late spring. Oblong seedpods contain the developing seeds, and when mature, the pods open and seeds pop out. Plant the fresh seeds one to two inches apart, approximately ¼ inch deep. Never allow fresh seed to dry out. Cover with a two-inch layer of leaf mulch and keep moist. Some germination should occur the following year, but many seeds may not emerge until the second spring. Once the plants have developed small rhizomes (usually after two years), they can be transplanted into regular planting beds. Plants should be ready to harvest six years after planting from seeds."

According to Deno, it needs cold followed by warm to germinate- and he got one seed to germinate after a month. So you'll have to keep your pot outdoors throughout the fall and winter and might get germination next spring.

I keep a list of the seed varieties I'm planning to WS and then estimate the # of containers/jugs of each seed type I think I'll WS. For example, I know after seeing the hummingbird more often this year I want to go heavy on Lobelia cardinalis/cardinal flower. I traded for seed to supplement what I harvested from my WS plants and have enough to WS 6-10 milk jugs. I've still got plenty of room to plant out lots more LC in a few beds so I'll go heavy with those. Last year I WS ten jugs of blackberry lily so I don't need to do those this year. I'll only do 1-2 jugs of Verbascum/mullein because the ones I WS last year will bloom in 2012. I've gotten very low germination from columbine the past two WS seasons and will sow those extra heavy this year. Apple & pear germinated 100% as did dogwood. I have more seeds and will WS them this year since I lost two mature dogwood trees to the October snowstorm. I'll WS as many jugs as I have turtlehead seeds. They were a hit with the bumblebees. I keep WS until I look at my pot ghetto and decide, "That's enough."

Don't know, but I'm not fretting about it; I have several forms from supermarkets, local nurseries, etc. that are distinct but that I don't know the names of. It's pleasant to be welcomed back. I moved the Sansevierias into the solarium, where they should do very nicely for another month or so, warm, dry, and well lit, before it gets too cold and they have to go in the house. I could do better with them in the house if I were sufficiently motivated and ingenious. I could mount fluorescent lights above them, and put them with trays below for watering, but raised on pebbles or sticks so that the roots didn't come in contact with the water that drained out. I'm too lazy or distracted, at least for the moment, but my plants are a pitiful sight by the time I take them out again in spring. Melissa
