Judy Garland Rose

Hi everyone,

Still deciding on which rosebush to find for spring planting. One that really stands out to me is Judy Garland. We all know she's a American legend and she has one of the best voices ever known to man (IMO), but is the rose named after her live up to it's namesake? I read it does really well in most gardens. I wanted to see your experience before going to buy it (if I find it around here).

I've had mine for over 10yrs. She gets to about 3ft high and 3ft wide. Doesn't bloom all that much. A couple good flushes per season. If I remember correctly she might get some powdery mildew in the spring. The blooms are nice, but blow kind of quickly. She might do better in your climate tho.

Mine never did much either. Like her it was a prima donna and required a lot of primping.
It never did sing!

Yes, look up the temperatures leading up to the bloom--lots of cool weather before a bud blooms will result in the best colors and largest bloom size. Hot weather will even turn normally double blooms to singles. No, roses need plenty of nitrogen--the best flowers come off of big healthy plants--which is why exhibitors will often have programs that maximize the amount of nitrogen fed to the plant--sometimes feeding the plant every week.

According to HMF, Chamblee's has Judy Fischer. You may what to contact them. Even if they are not advertizing it for sale, as long as they still have the mother plant and may promigate one for you. I do not know if they ship to Canada though. But you can always ask. Good Luck

Thank you! I was in two minds as my daughter was in so many but I thought its ok to share. Glad you asked about Judy Garland, Brad. The pictures I have seen of her looked pretty cool! Have been wondering about her, myself. :)

I'd guess she prefers a warm climate, then, 'cause I've had mine for about 8 years and have no complaints. I do have a weakness for red/yellow blends, though, as evidenced by 2 Rio Sambas and 3 Autumn Splendor in one bed.

The first JG I saw was some 6ft wide by about 3.5 ft tall. Mine has never gotten that wide probably due to tree roots.

A public garden near me had a mass planting of 'Judy Garland' for several years. The JGs were removed and replaced with another variety, but I'm not sure why. They were low-growing and fairly floriferous. I never found them very appealing. Too bad that a better rose wasn't selected to honor such a gifted performer.

Judy sounds like she's a tempermental one. I haven't seen it around here for sale before, but I'll keep my eyes open for it.

I don't grow it personally, but have seen others and I have always enjoyed viewing it.
