Whoa! The Chestnut Rose really is tender!

I have R. Roxburghii plena in a largish pot pending his permanent home in the new bed I'm digging this winter. He's a good-sized plant, and I kept him watered during our many nights in the 20's and maybe high teens, but 90% of his little leaves are crispy, and I'm just wondering about cane damage. This rose's canes peel and they're whitish, so it's kind of hard for me to tell what's what with the canes. I had him last winter, but I covered him during the freezes, and he was fine. Anybody have experience with this rose in this kind of cold weather and how well he recovers from damage?

Thanks!!!

Sherry
