looking for climbing rose and advice

I am not new to roses as I use to grow hyb roses and just got tried of all the problems that went with them so slowy over the last few years I removed all but two which have down pretty well with no care. That is the green rose and and Austin rose named Pegasus ( no black spot on it )

Well I am looking for some climbing roses to train on the pillars of my front porch. It faces east so will get good morning sun, I live in zone 7 in Okahoma so I have alot of summer heat. I was thinking of a white color to creamish or an orangish peach color. I was thinking about some Noisette's or mabee an Austin rose Snow Goose or Lady of Shalott if I can find one that does not get alot of blackspot as I do not want to do any spraying. Does anybody have any input as to what will do well for me ?
I am open to sujestions.

P.S. I would also like it to have some fragance.

Weighing all the preferences you've stated, a rose I encourage you to consider is 'Gruss an Aachen, Climbing.'. IMO, it's an ideal climber for planting near an entrance because it's not overly rampant, and is practically prickle-free.

The blossoms have an English rose "look". Opening with a distinct peachy tint and maturing to a creamy white, the blooms meet ALL your color preferences. The foliage is lovely and, under my growing conditions, is very healthy. It's a rose that performs well as a young plant, and, in my experience, seems only to improve with each passing season.

The major problem with GaA, Cl for American gardeners is that it's always been extremely rare in this country. There's good news, however: In late 2011, budwood for the rose was provided to Roses Unlimited in SC. It's possible that RU may have a few plants available this season, and I expect it will be readily available from them for fall 2013/spring 2014 planting.

I too say put it on the arbor. You want to be able to have accessibility to do home repairs, and you also don't want to stress the rose by constant movement. What do you use for fertilizing? There's a great product for the roses by Bayer. It's a liquid that is a three in one. I use it 3 times per season, and it really works great. You can get it at Lowes or a garden center. You could also train some clematis to bloom along with your climber. Good luck to you.

Jim, I believe those zones indicate minimums. Any of those hardy to zone 5 will grow in zone 7 and have enough surviving cane to cover a pergola, but if Z7 is the minimum it will be too tender for a lower zone and may not become a true climber. Does that make sense to you ? You are lucky because survival in Z5 is different from having enough living cane after winter to grow and to cover a pergola. If you have questions just give HCRs a call and Matt will be happy to answer them. I myself try to zone up so my climbers will actually climb and I don't have to worry much about winter protection.

Sheryl - many Austin roses have turned out to be way taller in warmer climates than the one they were bred in in England. I do not grow James Galway, but obviously it is trying to be taller than 8 feet. The difference in the blooms is remarkable, but there are many roses whose bloom color and even look is affected by the weather. So, you can bend those extra canes horizontally and tie them to something, and they will bloom more. Or, you could cut them off. My Austin 'Graham Thomas' sends out long canes which look just like that towards the end of summer, from the top of its already 8-9 foot height. I cut them off, as there is nothing for them to climb further on, and they fall sideways eventually and are a hazard to passersby. Do what you want - I do not think you will hurt the rose. Jackie
