Can't find the tear in my liner!

My pond is leaking. Within a week the water sinks down approximately six inches. However, I can't find the location of the leak. The pond is about four-feet in diameter, if that says something (and I don't know what) about how big the tear might be.

Any ideas for how to find the leak and repair it?? I have no fish in the pond at present.

I sent away for this stuff:

HH-66 Repair & Splice Vinyl Adhesive. It hasn't arrived yet. Has anybody ever used this, or any other product to repair a leak?

On a calm day, pour a 1/2 cup of milk in the center of your pond (or as near as you can get). It will be sucked toward the leak and you will be able to see the trail.

Is it possible the water is being wicked out by soil or anything hanging into the pond?

Based on the four ft in diameter the pond is loosing about 6 gallons a day which would be a very small leak. That would be about 6 drops a second not accounting for evaporation. Is there a waterfall or fountain running? If the pond is leaking the hole is probably the size of a pin depending on how deep the hole is.

I know I am responding to an old post, but I belong to several Yahoo doll groups. There is a wealth of information in those groups. look for an engineered wood with an aluminum oxide finish. Almost all of the newer prefinished woods have them. They are very similar to the finish on laminates except that it can be recoated many times. You never actually get to the 'wood' as your walking on the finish. Have no idea why someone would suggest solid wood. Engineered is much more stable and if you want wood its just as durable as anything else. Brazillian will change color 'darken' rather dramatically and with its smooth finish will tend to show everything, but for ease of cleaning you have a good product. Hi, Wow. Thank you so much. Thank you for listening and advising and thank you for the details. ajsmama, I don't think I found any Contact paper without adhesive. I need to look at WalMart again. Here's what I did today, though: I went to Home Depot, again, and bought....... do not laugh . . . . vinyl floor remnants - pre cut remnants (yes, that is linoleum), with a backing, not very thick, 6' x 8' (I think) for $22. I remembered that I had used left-over vinyl 20 years ago for under the sink and for the major pots and pans cabinets. And it was still whole and not too yukky when we changed out the cabinets 6 weeks ago. So, I'm going to use that for the underneath spots and some pull outs. Then I went to Joann's and they have a HUGE assortment of stuff- all kinds of vinyl- didn't see cork-- cork was expensive at Home Depot, though, and with a backing. Anyway, I was all set to buy my vinyl stuff for the normal, not heavy duty places -- and the lady asked me if I had THE COUPON..... of course I didn't. She said it was 40% off of a fabric cut. So I went home to look for it and only found a 20 % coupon.....etc etc etc The quest continues. Vasue, thank you so much. I have to look into the cork more in detail tomorrow. I'll tell you one thing, KCboom, my cabinet shop (local one in Tucker GA) had never been asked about the lacquer issue....I think nobody lines cabinets around here. The Home Depot guys are not aware of it either and neither was I until I bought a bunch of awesome spongy white liner stuff at Lowe's and I was about to use it 2 days ago when I actually read the package label and saw the warning.....If so many people have varnish and lacquer (?) then why aren't there more liners for it? Ok. Tomorrow is the backsplash and the heavy sanding of the family room wood which had to be pulled out and re-installed because of so many worm holes. The backsplash and floor were not supposed to coincide, but hey, things happen. At least they do with us. good night and thank you.

because I dont know the answer to my question and I am still not sure. I admitted that I hadnt thought of a hammer. I am not a builder and/or I hadnt thought of using a hammer. Pictures were to show what I have attempted so far and if anyone has experience with this or a similar situation. Its all in the question which you must have glossed over to miss my guess at the length of the beams. Do you have any other concerns I can answer?

Outside of using the milk, the only way to find a hole is to let the water leak out down to where the leak is, (if the rest of the liner is sound,it will not leak below the hole) and then inspect the liner at the waters edge.
If you have a waterfall, check the flow around the falls, or stream bed for water flowing over the liner's edge.
Look for wet spots around the edge that do not seem to dry.

Good ideas from everyone. If you still can't find the leak how about placing a new pond liner over the old one? For a 4' pond it shouldn't be too expensive. Definately check waterfall or external filter for leaks, leave pump off and check. I've had strong winds blow water out of the pond from the sprinkler head.

liz, besides the other worthwhile suggestions, check around the edge of your pond where there is a fold in the liner that comes up and over onto the ground.
Liner folds can act like syphon tubes and draw water out from the pond, usually after a heavy rain, water changes or topping up.
Don's point about looking for wet spots on the ground that don't seem to dry has merit, they are a good indication that syphoning could be the culprit.

I have found this to be the cause of many ponds losing water. If you find a fold where this is occurring, you can pump silicone seal into the fold, using a caulking gun and it will stop the syphoning from happening. Just wipe the liner fold with a dry cloth prior to using the silicone seal.
