Finding Joists in Porch Ceiling for Plant Hooks
Comments (14)I am exhausted. If there are joists up there, I can't find them. I have knocked with my knuckles - and then a hammer wrapped in a towel - for hours on end. Can't find them. I have run my stud finder with a piece of white paper under it over that rough ceiling until I can't do it any more. The light turns off. The light turns green. Run over the same area again and it doesn't do it. Run over it again and it does do it. Then it doesn't. The paper is only 8 1/2 x 11 so frustrating when you get to the edge of the paper. What a hunk of junk. I have hammered finishing nails through the drywall over and over again. Some resistance and then - slips right in. No joist. I've been standing on a 8' ladder working on a 12' rough ceiling for hours. I've got pencil, hammer, rag for over the hammer, stud finder, measuring tape, blue painters tape, drill and bit, extension cord, the hooks - all the tools - I'm giving up. This is apparently just not meant to be. Thanks for your time, everyone....See MoreFloor Joists, I-Joist or Dimensional 2x?
Comments (10)I can't think of an advantage in using 30 ft long floor framing members that only span 15 ft. but the obvious disadvantage would be the high cost. Many codes now require a drywall ceiling below I-Joists so a basement ceiling might be required. 11 7/8" I-Joists are considerably stronger than 2x10 dimension lumber so those are unlikely to be equivalent choices. The reason to use I-Joists is that they can span longer distances and 15 ft is not a span long enough to require using them. 2x10's would meet code and 2x12's would be stiffer and less bouncy....See MoreFloor Joists: Lumber, I-Joists or Trusses
Comments (37)" Just curious, if a "full basement foundation" is built on grade, how is it a foundation rather than a first floor/ground floor?" If you can dream it, it can done. My intention was to artificially raise grade, by grading up to the 13' higher second floor, making the second floor appear as a first floor, which would no doubt require thousands of yard of dirt but I had access to free dirt; the size of the lot made it feasible. Visually it would appear as a raised home or on a hill, with a driveway leading up; not an uncommon sight when I lived in NJ. I was keen on a full basement to accommodate a couple of bowling lanes, something I may vaguely consider building as a separate inconspicuous structure somewhere on the lot, however there are other important things at hand now, like completing interior design and renderings; these are close to getting finished, just need to complete designing builtins around the fireplace then the walkin pantry to DW's specific requirements....See MoreReplace ceiling beams/joists due to rat infestation over 10yr period?
Comments (11)It will be easier to see what is what when the shake roof has just been removed and sunlight hits the area for the first time since 1964. Make sure the attic floor is covered in plastic tarps before the horrendous mess of a shake roof removal starts to fall all over the attic. Also cover the yard area near the house to keep old nails and wood debris easy to find and clean up....See MoreJames Stables
