Today I am in mourning and feel very sad because

14 years ago

when I returned home about noon, I usually feed my fish in the morning but went to physical therapy first. Upon walking outside on the deck, an egret was just about to fly away as I was walking down the steps. I looked down into the pond and my fish (about 14 koi and comets, shebunkins) were no longer there. I was in shock to say the least and couldn't believe it. Now there are no fish that I can nurture, or just enjoy. A few of them were three years old and were my pets. Has this happened to you?

Oh Vicki, I'm sooooo sorry!!
Its like losing any other kind of pet. Its a real sadness.
Hopefully you can figure out how to keep the predators away, and then get more fish. I realize that you can't just replace one pet with another.....but getting new ones will let you once again have the fish to nurture and enjoy.

Oh that is too bad Vicky. Very sorry. I hope some are hiding and not all are gone. I remember losing "Wayne" the catfish. I still feel bad when I think of it.

It is the love we have for them and the love they have for us, both without reservations, that make losing them so hard. A family member is missing disrupting our routine and leaving empty space. Now who will hear our secrets, comfort us and celebrate with us? I feel your loss and cry with you but I also know that you have a big heart with room for a new furkid. Let yourself cry and grieve and you will know the right time for an additional love. Missy will never be forgotten. If you find that you need a "kitty fix", visit an adoption center or shelter and just visit with some of the orphans. Hugs to you.

Thanks for your response, Sweeby. That is a very interesting point about whether the relationship was good or not. Generally, I think you are right about that. Odd, one would think the better relationship would be more sorrowfully mourned. But one also mourns the lost opportunities. No, there is no unfinished business. I did everything I could have done to try to save that marriage. And I negotiated with him much longer than I had to in order to arrange issues with the children. There is nothing more I could have done. He has gone on with his life and so have I. As it turns out, he is o.k. There was surgery which showed that there was no malignancy after all. The growths on his spine were removed and with therapy he should recover. I am glad about that. But I am puzzled by how emotional my sadness felt. My relief doesn't feel that way at all. There are just a lot of practical reasons that it's good he will still be around. It is very strange not to understand why I feel the way I do. I'm just glad the crisis is over.

boxerpups - such a sad situation for that young girl - and surely her sister too. it does sound like she is acting out and I do agree that you should contact the teacher. maybe someone can intervene with her. life is tuff enough for young people today and that girl has more than any one young person should have working against her. i don't think i'd go the court route (don't think you will either). in the end it could cause more trouble for your dd and your family than it's worth. i'm not saying the young girl isn't worth it or that we don't have the right to be upset when someone damages our property. but in the end, a fridge is a fridge and hopefully will be fixed w/o much expense. OTOH, I do think the young girl needs confronted about it. for her good! and i think it is something you could handle. holding someone to account is not mean, it is the more loving thing to do for them. short term upset for long term gain. it might not show in her in the near future, but it will be going around in her head that someone was more concerned about her future than a material thing. it sounds like she has been raised to think that things are more important than she is. until you decide how to fix the fridge door, i think i'd use it as a prayer reminder for that young girl. and a thank you for the blessings you and your family have in each other. and as for getting a new puppy after the loss of another very loved furbaby, my belief is that the best way to honor my precious gone to heaven furbaby is to find another furbaby in need of a loving home and lots of spoiling! i think that makes them very happy!

Oh, I am so sorry. What a lousy start to spring. I also hope that some of them are in hiding. Feel sad and mourn the little guys, they were your pets. Then go get some new pretty fishes for the pond which I am sure is a wonderful watery home.

What a horrible thing to walk in on.
I have gone through a similar situation after a raccoon family's feeding frenzy in my pond.

It does indeed set you back, sorry for your losses.

Vicki I am so sorry for your loss of your fish. I posted a month or so ago about all of my beautiful Koi I had for 13 years that I lost to something in the dead of winter. I was so very sad, so I know how terrible you feel. I wanted to fill my pond in, but everyone was so kind and told me get some new fish. I did..they will never replace the fish I had, but I do enjoy watching the new ones. So morn your fish and when you are ready..really go and get a couple of new ones, they will bring back joy to you. So very very sorry you are going through this.

You may have to net the pond in the future. Leave enough space between the net and the water so the egret beak can't reach the fish. The egret will be back. They remember where they've eaten.

I'm sorry for your loss--it hurts so much to lose them, doesn't it?

Hopefully he didn't get them all and some are in hiding. That's a lot of fish to eat at once. We lost our favorite fish (and a bunch others) soon after we installed our pond. We had to net it because it's been 4 years now and the herons keep coming even though they haven't been able to get any more.

We lost many fish last year to a Great Blue Heron. Before that we lost some fish and frogs to Racoons.

Try to get some new fish soon so you can form new bonds.
BTW, are you sure it was an Egret? I didn't realize they had them in New Jersey.
