Well, it may be a word but I don't like it.

We were watching the weather report this evening and the weather lady was telling about the coming ice storm due tomorrow and she said "that'll slicken up the roads for you". Slicken? Dictionary says transitive or intransitive verb but I sure don't like it. Slicken? that sounds like a brand of hair oil or gel.

.I never thought about this word before now. I don't say it either. Now what word would you use instead? There is an ice storm coming which will i really_____the roads. The only thing that comes to mind is "ice uo."

I don't say I use it much but if I did I might say "don't add water to that icy pavement, it'll only slicken it up".

Wow! I was gone yesterday, when last I saw this there were only 27 posts! I tried to read through all of them, but I'm not sure I caught everything. I tried photoshopping Cilantro's green idea and Holligator's dull gold and a black frame around the stained glass like trailrunner's. I picked the green & gold out of the stained glass; I'm not sure how'll they'll look on everyone's monitors, especially the gold. Sorry, but I only "painted" around the window on the gold. No matter which you decide to do, IMHO the stained glass needs to retain some sort of frame, either the current wood or black. I'm still partial to tzmaryg's idea of the bottom part of the window white and leaving the top part they way it is; that is also a bit of a compromise with your DH. But others have suggested a gel to tone down the redness of the mahogany. Any scraps of the mahogany around to experiment with? Or for the green, maybe the color of your dishes. Sorry, I'm not much help other than trying to give you a mock up and even that may be showing up a little too bright! I hope it helps some, though!

it is pretty standard procedure when giving discounts to certains groups. if you are a floridian the cruise lines offer very good discounts and you get your discount online but when you check in if your license is not a FL one they will charge the difference to your credit card at the full price fare. same w/ tickets for the theme parks we get awesome discounts but only w/ drivers license proof for each ticket and they most certainly check that. i always fly SW they have never ever once had a late flight w/ me or lost luggage and i've flown them since the mid 80's several times each yr. i'd rather fly them 4 times a yr to chicago then only affording once a yr on united. hope all your plans for this cruise go well! our first cruise was fabulous, just got back at 1pm today, i'll post pics this weekend, ship was all decked for christmas too! your weather should be very nice, orlando is low 80's most of the next week and miami will be warmer :-) good luck! wish i was going again lol ~ liz

I think Lowe's has a 1 year guarantee. Maybe that would work on these roses. I was in our local Lowe's the other day, was looking at the roses. Just pathetic! Most were wilted, dried up, crying out for water. A guy who looked like a manager pranced up to me, all smiley faced and asked if I was finding everything all right - I said yes, but would you please get someone to water your poor roses? I am a rose person and it really bothers me to see those poor plants dying from lack of water. His happy face burst like a balloon and he gave me a blank stare. He pointed at a lady employee and said oh, that is her department. She apologized and said she has been really busy. I thought - doing what? Watching the roses die? Most of the ones on display were in death throes from lack of water. I strolled through the garden area later and she was watering - not the roses but ferns, etc. that looked just fine. Then they put the half dead plants on 50% or more off.....when they could have just cared for them and sold them at full price. Go figure! I haven't noticed roots like what you all described but will check. They are bad about mislabeling plants. I bought on another trip there a rose that had probably just arrived, looked great, beautiful buds. It is labeled Carefree Beauty but it most certainly is not. It looks like a pale pink double Knockout. Have seen the candy pink, pink blush, more like a single, but not one like this. And....the other day it produced a bloom that is half red/half blush pink. I have heard of KO's that occasionally do this. So who knows what it is? Its pretty - healthy and is going in my pink bed - and I WILL check the roots! Judith

I spent an hour or two last night reading some treatises on Appalachian English as a dialect. It is spoken in this part of S.E. Ohio and they even had the syntax rules defined. As I was reading it, I kept nodding my head in agreement. Uh huh.....Uh huh. Totally interesting. I didn't even know I came into this world in Appalachia until I was in University for the second time and somebody mentioned my county as Appalachian.

I guess I mentioned that as it just sounds like something our weather person would say and nobody would think a thing about it. LOL.

Yeah, sounds ok to me, too. And I am right there with Suzy, Appalachian born and bred. I found out about it at an earlier age. When LBJ declared his war on poverty in mid 60's. Looking at the Newsweek cover of diry little tow-headd kids outside a dilapidated house and having my mother tell me, yess, that is us. Be thankful for what you have. And I was.

I guess I mentioned that as it just sounds like something our weather person would say and nobody would think a thing about it.

ROTFL!! The news people on our local TV stations (and I use that term very loosely) remind me of Les Nessman on WKRP. They can mispronounce and otherwise mangle the English language better than almost any other group of people I could name.

I'm not sure I'd want to give them a justification by enlightening them to the syntax rules of our various American dialects. I'm afraid it would only encourage them.

I remember once a couple of years ago we were due for a big snowstorm. I heard one of the Philly weatherpeople say.."Well this is really going to screw up the weekend for a lot of folks. " LOL I did a double take on that one.

Do any of you remember The Story of English on PBS...I had to google it thru Robert MacNeil, one of the producers. Click on the lists of shows in the series for an idea of how interesting it was. If I ever get around to signing up for Netflix I'm going to rewatch it. Or there was also a book...josh
