Comments (13)Caldonbeck, those photos are beautiful. Love the petals on top of the boxwood hedge - so evocative. I have CPM and TG both. TG is an established huge shrub - it's magnificent. CPM is about 22 months old - it'll be 2 in April. It's beautiful too. Both bloom about the same for me. I think CPM is more fragrant of the two. Mine is in a terrible spot: half the year in the sun, half the year in the shade of a building - in bad soil. It's impervious to these things. I think TG would be too. I think they're both great roses. LEH is new, I just put the bare root bushes in about a 2 weeks ago. I saw it in my friend Hoovb's garden and "had to have it". It will be a much smaller plant than the other two. It is also much, much more fragrant. It's fragrance is so powerful that it affects your sense of taste as well, at the back of your mouth, as you sniff it. I can hardly wait 'til ours bloom!...See MoreLady Emma Hamilton or Pat Austin
Comments (10)I have Pat Austin. I initially wanted LEH, but my nursery was out so I got Pat Austin. From what I've heard, LEH has a slightly stronger scent, blooms are have more of a pink tone, and the blooms tend to somewhat me more upright than Pat Austin's nodding blooms. I find it to me to be a matter of preference of what you are looking for. I have heard Pat Austin grows larger than LEH. My Pat Austin is a really vigorous grower with really elegant green foilage that is semi-glossy. I have had no problems with disease or anything else with Pat Austin. The blooms pass rather quickly, but it blooms so fast that you get a steady bloom. Mine is in it's first year from a pot and is easily 3.5ft tall now and budded all over. I personally like the nodding blooms. It gives the rose a unique look in my preference. Scent of Pat Austin is a straight mildly strong tea scent. Pat Austin's opening is a spectacle as well as it reflexes open and has it's eye gradually open into full bloom. A very timid bloom as well. It will open during the day and if the bloom is newer, it will close back up during a cooler night and as soon as the sun hits it in the morning, it gradually perks back open. PA blooms look spectacular in the rain. I have no opinion either way. I love them both even though I only have Pat Austin. If possibly just get both, but I know they are similar so you may only choose one....See MoreLady Emma Hamilton
Comments (20)Hello ... I have LEH, Pat Austin and Summer Song ... They're grown in pots, as I garden on a rooftop patio ... I am not a rose expert, as I've started growing rose last winter when I potted 12 austin roses. LEH is healthy for me (but I can say that about any Austin I have, and I do not spray for blackspot, so it might be my climate ... slugs enjoyed her foliage though ). The flowers are pretty (my LEH shows some pink overtones), the dark shades of the young shoots are nice and the growth is bushy ... However I find she does not bloom that much (only one flush since the begining of the season, but this flush was gorgeous) and she is not really fragrant ... Her blooms are smaller than Pat Austin's and they do not nod as much. @Lizalily : I have Summer Song too ... I've been very disappointed by this rose. In my opinion the colour is a gaudy orangey red (mine has no blooms at the moment, but it has buds, I might be able take a picture next week if you want), blooms really look messy as they age, and the bush looks leggy and is very upright. Still, it's my first growing season with it ... Pat Austin is far more elegant and pretty IMO. Barthelemy Note : I should add that my LEH might have suffered from drought this summer as my irrigation system failed as I was on holidays ......See MorePlease compare: Lady Emma Hamilton, Carding Mill, Summer Song
Comments (24)I have all of the Austin oranges - Pat Austin, Lady Emma Hamilton, Summer Song, Lady of Shalott, and also Carding Mill. My Pat Austin has shown rose rosette disease, but is responding favorably to aspirin treatments at the moment. I'm hoping for the best on this. It does bloom nicely, but the flowers do not take our summer heat. The bush gets quite tall. It does have a good color, but, again, the flowers fry easily. Lady Emma Hamilton does not get to be a tall bush. It is more spreading. It does not bloom in large amounts of flowers at any given time, but it has a fairly steady supply of nicely fragrant flowers. It is the most consistent performer of the oranges that I have. Summer Song was quite pretty in the spring. For summer all three bushes of it that I have didn't do much of anything. I noticed that a couple of them were munched on probably by deer. Something ate the leaves off of them as well as part of the stems, and I have seen deer in the yard at various points. The first year I had these plants they did reasonably well. This past summer, year two, they didn't care for the excessive heat and just sulked. They did, however, throw long canes. The orange color does fade badly in the heat. They did not bloom much at all in the fall either. I think it was more because of the weather. Lady of Shalott was pretty its first year. It seemed to be going along okay growing and flowering most of the way through the growing season. It pretty well stopped by the end of September, but it had a couple of flowers late. I think this bush will get fairly large. Flower size has been on the small size. Perhaps it will improve some next year. Carding Mill does reasonably well, but the flowers have been on the small side. It can get to be about 5-6 feet tall here. Its growth habit is fairly cylindrical and doesn't spread much. The apricot color bleaches out to a pink in the heat. Otherwise, overall it has been reasonably consistent here. I have no major complaints about this one. I hope this helps a bit....See Morerobynb
