The school board in North Platte actually had a discussion about possibly removing the monkey bars at the elementery schools. Someone had the idea they could be dangerous and some child might fall from them. Yeah, I suppose that could happen. We could also remove the other pieces of playground equipment and put up padding around the area. We must not have been very good parents, our kids climbed trees even played in the river, about 6" deep where we were. One of the boys did have a broken arm after falling out of a tree, perhaps we should have cut the tree down but then he might have tripped over the cut stump.

You can only go so far protecting the children from any hazard they might encounter and I really don't think monkey bars are high on the list.

What they really need to eliminate are the "slip and fall" trial lawyers. Then there would be no problem at all.

Here is a long article on the post WWII Adventure Playground in England. It's not the article I wanted, about kids learning about dealing with risk in a complex environment, it wanders off in an annoying critique-y direction.
There's some cool info out there somewhere, about older kids showing the younger kids how to test for safety , while playing in the London rubble.

I have been using MG potting soil for about four years now, but I must say this year I am very dissapointed. It seems they are adding manure to the mix because when i opened the bags they had a very strong odor of , well, manure. Upon watering of my containers, the water coming out of the drain holes runs a yellowish color. It stains the patio. I am growing 15 plants in containers and 25 plants in the ground. The plants in the ground are far more healthy than the ones in containers. About half of the container plants appear to be either burned from over fert. and some are developing early blight. Could be coincidence but I am wondering if they are adding manure to the mix, is it properly broken down?

I think the quality of the fabric is more important than the medium versus heavy (which I suppose is in the weight of the fabric). I used a "heavy" weight fabric once not even questioning the upholster's fabrics and within a year, it needed redoing, whereas the original which seemed more medium in weight had lasted 10 years to that point. I asked a person (who I came to know later) about the difference, and she told me (that's what she did for a living) that the contents of the fabric are very important. I cannot remember now what was in the fabric that did not wear well but the original was a heavy duty woven cotton jacobean and the second was a tapestry which contained a synthetic that did not wear well. Not that all synthetics are of poor quality, and I wish I could recall what she told me now but that was long ago, but I have also experienced the same in a very expensive sofa I bought in the 1980s and it wore very quickly and had what appeared to be a great heavy weight paisley but it was not. So I think the "quality" of the fabric is more important than weight.

I hate hats too and living in SD there are times in the winter when I need one but my head itches so bad I cant stand them. As for hair extensions, no I wouldnt. I would never spend that kind of money on it for one thing and it would drive me nuts when my head itches like it does all the time. I worked with a girl who had them. She was half white and half black. She spent a lot of money to have them put in. This was when she was in high school. Then she couldnt afford to have themmaintained so you could always see the little rubber band things in her hair and it really looked stupid. Now she is attending hairdresser college and she has them in again and I still dont like them.So NO not for me.

"If you think this is not offensive and belittling and objectifying women--you are part of the problem." Wow. Really? Talk about self righteous. I see veggie's point, but not everybody reads it as equating women as "second base" or that men view women as sexual play things --- as evidenced that some breast cancer survivors are not finding this offensive --- but I guess they haven't seen the light? Actually, one could easily make the point that part of what's so devastating about breast cancer is how if affects women's sexuality and their sex life. And, yes, breasts are part of this. I think the same thing when I hear about somebody wanting to sue a Fast Food Restaurant for making them corpulent. Nobody tied them down and stuffed the product in their faces or forced them to BIGGY their meal.

I also remember the first time I ever saw the Grand Canyon as a child. And then I mentally compare it with how it looked when I took my children to see it. It's tasteful now, and beautiful.......no complaints there, but it's been 'safety-ed' to death at the viewing areas in comparison. I wonder if that has really made a difference in morbidity?

I guess I'm a little ambivalent about the issue, because undoubtedly some things are safer........but then again some things are a whole lot more unsafe than they used to be. I'm also not sure the trade-off is an improvement. I also suspect it grates on us older folks because we've always been taught that we have consequences to our own stupid actions, and sometimes resent somebody else's choices in what freedom we are sometimes forced to give up 'for our own good' because somebody else didn't take any personal responsibility. It's about not being able to think for yourself anymore, I guess.

I agree, nobody wants to take responibilty for their own stupidity. Sure am glad that I grew up when I did (and that mother had the supply of Band Aids stashed where I could easily reach them).

I remember hanging upside on the monkey bars and then falling on my head..more than once. Hmmm..maybe that's the problem.

LOLOL I broke my nose when I was very small but not on monkey bars, but hanging from my knees from a limb of the big, old apple tree in our yard. Then I ran a hanger hook through my cheek pretending it was a bow, and broke my tail bone jumping off the porch into a pile of leaves. I survived jumping off our garage roof with an umbrella for a parachute......unscathed, actually. And I was eventually dislodged from the laundry rinse tub I had curled up into like a hedgehog to roll down a steep hill. I'm now claustrophobic as a result, however.

All of this happened in the safety of my own home and not on all that 'dangerous' playground equipment.

And I thought I pulled some doozies. Calliope, you got me beat. Mine had mainly to do with speed of one kind or the other, hence skinned knees, hand, elbows and whatever else could be used as brakes, yes, rear-end too. Knock on wood, no broken bones to this day.
