Suggestions for small weeping tree or evergreen beside pond

Tried searching and got everything but. I dug out a small weeping crabapple from beside my pond yesterday. It was dead. I'd like to put another tree or evergreen there but maybe will be too close to the liner. Only have 2 ft from pond edge to work with. I'd love a Japanese maple but they aren't available here. I saw a dwarf weeping arctic willow grafted form that was lovely and the weeping caragana --think it's maybe a walker caragana might be choices. Other than that maybe some kind of tall grass?

The sumacs have a lot of amazing colors and some look a lot like a Japenese Maple, I plan to put one in at some point, I really like the tiger eye (Ithink that is the name). I would shy from the carigana do you really want that mess in the pond although evergreens are not much better. Another one I would love to have is a weeping lilac, saw one at Holes a few years back and wanted it ever since. Last one is a butterfly bush, they get a very nice shape but I have not had much success with them, of course the first one I had came with me from Vancouver and the 2nd one I got was dug up repeatedly by the cat of all things.

There is a serpentine willow next to the Extension pond. It has been there for 6 or 7 years now and it is still only 4 feet tall since the trunk is constantly turned back on itself. We have to under cut the branches several times a year because it will droop to the ground pretty quickly but that is quickly done. For some reason it has catkins more than once a season. It is really lovely if you like a structured look. Sandy

7a isn't so bad, we hardly dip below 10 degrees. A lot of plants that were formerly thought not hardy here are proving hardy the last few years. I have some cape fuchsia pulling through. Yes, 'Goshiki' osmanthus is fully hardy here and I planted quite a few at my cousins. They can get massive I saw a mature specimen at a nursery near her house. I worry it will not fill the space as they are very slow growing though and more rotund than tall. I have seen a few other osmanthus at nurseries but they aren't offered here too much due to our area having variable dips in zones, it's super erratic so many places don't carry certain things and its only in the last few years that more solid zone 7 plants have been showing up in MD at nurseries. Our yard is definitely zone 7a though.

Here is a link with alot of good information. You will notice as you read, that they have certain type of aerators to sell, so I'd ignore that and read the good stuff. I haven't seen a weeping dwarf korean lilac, but I've seen many regular tree form palibins, which are nice but can get top heavy. I would suggest you check out the conifer forum. Those guys have countless awesome dwarf evergreens that love the sun.

If you want a focal point maybe a conifer or evergreen might be good for winter. Or peeling bark... I had an issue w/ Amelanchiers and poor air circulation, so maybe such a protected site might cause leaf problems. Also notice if the alcove gets blasted w/ full west sun for a short time w/ little breeze, & what the wall behind it is. My west exposure is red/brown brick, and some plants too close have showed leaf burn although it's moist. They are in shade until 2:00, then they get quick-fried.

I *think* I'm about to put a Nishiki Dappled Willow on the far side of my pond. It's pretty wet there. They can be 9' - 12' high, but take well to pruning, from what I've read.

I would suggest checking out Broken Arrow Nursery. They offer a variety of weeping/cascading conifers and their online catalog is full of a lot of great information. Even if you simply use them as an online information resource, they're offerings are awesome.

Thanks everyone for responding. Sumacs are bad for suckering aren't they? I love that new black lace elder but it get's pretty big. Checked out the site Steve. Am sorta leaning towards a grass and then put a small tree on the other side of the path --that way the tree would be 6 ft away from the pond and would screen my neighbor. Not that I can do much this week as is snowing right now. Came home from Edmonton to 2" of snow and Etown is north of me. Old man winter!
