My husband brought red and orange into my life in a big way. One reason why I have so many roses is that while I was traipsing around picking up pink and white roses he bought red and orange by the dozen. I love him dearly and though the garden is my design much of it is the way it is because I had to incorporate all those bright roses. Our place is called Red Rose Ridge.

Well, I was all set to pick out a red man-pleaser. Fortunately I asked him first, and it turns out that HIS true love is PURPLE! So we have Night Owl on a trellis right off the deck. Purple, I never woulda guessed...!!

Remember that not all men see colors the way women do.
A large percentage are red/green color blind. And red isn't at all special to them.
So know your man, as well as you know your roses.

As a man, I would say my preference is whichever smells better

My husband likes red roses but he LOVES orange roses, yes, orange. His favorite rose is Fragrant Cloud. The more screaming orange they are, the better he likes them.

Well, my wo(man) likes yellow....although some of the first roses I ever bought were a Chrysler Imperial and a Blaze :)

I'm not sure it's just red ones but more bright colored ones. I've found that he never picks out anything pastel or pale. Red, orange, purple and even hot pink are his favorites and oh yes, they have to be smelly!

Deb knows she can't miss if she gets me a Crimson Glory, Oklahoma or Chrysler Imperial (rose). Mirandy would be nice if she could find one.

Thanks sam0ny4b for the preview. I have CI on order for this spring. I had a cheap Walmart one a few years ago. Occasionally it produced beautiful blooms, but it was runty and inconsistant, so I'm pretty sure it was not a healthy plant. I'm hoping for much better this time. : )

Oh yeah, I like lots of colors, but red IS my favorate, so I guess I fit the stereotype. Actually, thrips don't damage them near as much as most pastels, so that's a practical enticement to GO RED!

Digger, Deb can get Mirandy for you from Roses Unlimited and Vintage Gardens as a Mirandy VID. I agree with your rich red rose fragrance choices of Crimson Glory, Chrysler Imperial, Oklahoma and Mirandy. Papa Meilland is also very good, as is Mister Lincoln, Erotica, and Velvet Fragrance. However, Crimson Glory is tops in my opinion.

The only ones he has recently raved about (out at our city's rose garden) were MR. LINCOLN (have one coming from Pickering) and LOUISE CLEMENTS (how odd, seeing that his other loves are the more high centered hybrid teas/floribundas)! I'm the one who goes crazy over the old fashioned types.

He always says we have too many pinks (not really).

MISTER LINCOLN was my late father's favorite rose. It is a classic red with petals like crushed velvet. Mister Lincoln was a good, reliable performer in my mother's rose garden.

ROUGE ROYALE is my favorite red rose because of the quartered flower form and rich ruby red color.

Both roses produce sinfully fragrant, superb cut flowers.

Thank you curlydoc :) Those 4 (and climbers Don Juan & climbing Crimson Glory) were the only roses I wanted in my garden for 30 years. A half dozen bushes of each variety and I was extremely happy. Then Deb decided she wanted those other colored roses *sigh*. Crimson Glory has been my favorite rose since 1961. Mirandy was the best of them in Sacramento. She struggles a bit in Montana. Oklahoma was the problem child in CA. He is the best of them here.

My husband just loves Blaze. He wanted it for on the last arbor he built last fall. I cringe at this some because of Blaze's rep. So I talked him into Dublin Bay. I think he'll like this one too.

Oh Yes! A red rose with velvet petals and a scent to die for ... Crimson Glory is glorious! But Papa Meilland has better form and more damask sharpness in its scent. Of HPs I love Souvenir d'Alphonse Lavallée (named after one of the Presidents of the national French Horticultural society). It´s true dark red colour turning to royal purple and it´s scent is so awesome! Plant a few of these on my grave, when I am gone... I cherish them as I live!

I showed my hubby a pictre of About Face. He really liked it so I bought it for him, since my daughters and I each have our own rose. It was only an own-root baby last summer so I expect great things this year. I think red turn hims off a bit, finds it almost too 'in your face'.

DH likes a lot of the roses - HIS roses are: Red Cascade. He planted two by the front door and promised to keep them whacked back so the door remains usable. This past fall he designed some enclosure thing for each one he thinks will contain them (after completely failing on the whacked back thing last summer). I'm waiting to see. In the interim, if you come to see us (please do), use the back door - its safer.

The other roses he has purchased without my input are two Don Juan and a Black Cherry. He calls the space in the East Garden where I've planted Mister Lincoln, Firefighter and Veteran's Honor "the land of the jolly red giants" and is always talking about it.

I'd say whether he knowns it or not, red is his thing.

For you sophisticated red loving males - try the Buck - Prairie Clogger. Dark red fragrant single blooms that never quit.

Digger - my Mirandy from Roses Unlimited is the bomb. Try one.

And I forgot to say that his other favorite is Playboy! Of course he didn't know what it was called...

My husband wants to put yellow roses everywhere. I originally had the 'cool' bed (pinks, whites, lavenders) on one side and the 'hot' bed (yellow, red, orange) on the other. I even bought 3 yellow roses for him in another bed. But he keeps wanting to put garish yellow roses in every bed. I felt bad reading that article, because it sounds like us.

I think it's safe to assume that no man likes pink roses.....

The first rose I bought was a pink, Charlotte Armstrong. Saved up my lawn mowing money and bought it for Mom. I usually had a CA hidden somewhere in my reds after that. I always said it was for Mom but I just like it. Pink isn't my favorite color but some of our best roses are pink. Deb loves pink roses and they are all over the place. I have to at least like them :)

I love deep red, fragrant roses myself, and I sure hope 'Oklahoma' likes our droughty, sunny, warm garden: it's the only modern HT I've ever bought here. Well, I got 'Climbing Etoile de Hollande' as well, but it's a climber. I guess these choices do say something about my tastes. My husband has a particular fondness for yellow roses, the brighter the better, which I also like. I like every color, though not every shade of every color. I agree my husband doesn't care much for pastels or for pink, but he makes exceptions, the Alba 'Celestial' for example.

BTW, it's an extremely hardy rose capable of surviving temperatures down to -45 f

I'm waiting for a man to give me a rose. Giving a rose or multiple roses to a woman is usually a good sign in a guy. My dad gave me my first guy rose - only I think he had someone pick it out for him. He's color-blind too.
