Name That Plant!

Question about forum and ID Plant

I posted this picture back in March and got an answer, but now I can't find the post. The posts only go as far as May. Is there a way to read older posts? Anyway, here's the link to the picture again. I hope someone can help me ID it one more time. Thanks in advance.

Whether or not the materials are suitable depends more on their size than anything else. You want all the particles in the soil to be pretty regular in size and concentrated around that 1/8" size, +/- 1/16". I use equal parts of pre-screened orchid (fir) bark in 1/8-1/4" size, screened Turface, and either Gran-I-Grit in grower size or #2 cherrystone. You can't avoid the major work of a full repot, and the first time you do it, if the roots have been neglected, is the most difficult. The bad news is if you don't do it, your plants will steadily decline. The good news is that once the plants are in the gritty mix pictured, subsequent repots and root-pruning are quite easy. I have all my houseplants (including cacti/succulents) and all my woody material in the gritty mix. If you've spent time here on the Container Forum, you can probably tell I've done a LOT of experimenting with soils, and I've yet to find a formulation that tops the one I just shared above. It is a VERY good choice for any of your plants. I'm not sure what to tell you about your 'time' constraints. You can research further to find what the individual components 'jobs' are in the soil, and see if you have anything that closely matches their 'job description'. I didn't disable them, just don't click on them. But I'd sure like to know how to stop the page going crazy when an ad expands from the top and then contracts again. Then I have to wait until it times out. Yesterday it did it to me twice in a row. I can endure it, but it's better to keep the site free. I've got the latest version of Firefox which blocks things but they're always one step ahead to get around blockers. Does anyone actually buy any of the products advertised? I just happen to shop at some of the places they advertise anyway.

Question about Subject Area pages on GW Forums list

Looking again at the Forums page, I think the Subject Areas should be left for use by occasional visitors who need to know what's available on Garden Web. For frequent users who want to get to a forum quickly, you need a comprehensive list that doesn't involve a lengthy scroll. In my case I check "Building a Home", "New England Gardening" and "Soil, Compost and Mulch" every day, so these appear on my bookmarks menu along with the "Garden Webs Forum" page (and some non-GW sites). If there's something interesting going on in a particular forum I'll keep a tab open for that forum. I avoid using the main Forums page because it's annoying to have to scroll down. Claire

Carrieb, I clicked on the link you provided and it took me to my post about kumquats from April 19th. I know I posted a question with the picture above, but I couldn't find it. I think it was back in March. How do I get to posts from March? Do you know?

PFC... - when I put your user name into the search engine on this site, I get posts only from April of this year forward. When I put my own user name into that same search engine, I get posts going all the way back to 2004. Is it possible that you used a different user name then?

Good suggestion, Carrie. Also, although the last page may end with fairly recent posts, all GW pages are indexed by Google. If you can find it with the right combo of search words, it's still available to read that way. "Include omitted results" sometimes helps.

As I was clicking submit, I remembered you can bring the thread back to life that way, you can add a new post, like an update to a plant you couldn't ID last year.

I know what you mean. I have searched my username in the GardenWeb search before and it always showed very old posts.

I googled the words "beautiful pfcmcl" restricted to the site: http://forums2.gardenweb.com. It showed a link with a description that showed the exact subject to my posting "Beautiful Plant - ID Please" but when I clicked on it, it just took me to the Name that Plant Forum First Page, so I gave up. After I got the last post from purpleinopp, I googled "Beautiful Plant - ID Please" with no restrictions and it found the direct link! It worked just fine!

The post is from Sun, Mar 10, 13 at 15:14. Thank you so much for your help. No idea why the search for my username from GardenWeb is not showing all my posts. I hope it gets fixed somehow someway.

and ask them to look into it..

you might put a link to this post.. so you dont have to retype the whole issue ...

then they can telll you if anything might be wrong.. or done

PFCMCL, from past experiences of my own, I gather that the first link you found (which took you to the Name That Plant index page) was a link to where the title had appeared on that index page -- but your post is no longer on that page, which is why you didn't find it on the index page.

In other words, Google doesn't link to the way the index page appeared in the past, simply to the current index page.

I wonder if adding something like "follow-up" (which appears on thread pages but probably not on the index pages) might allow us to omit the false-positive index pages?
