I'm not prejudice against certain breeds but I had a notion about pit bull owners. I realized that I never considered getting a pit bull because I assumed the type of people who liked pit bulls were macho-guys who wanted a tough dog they could show off and feel powerful with. Watching the Dog Whisperer changed my mindset and I would love a pit bull. One episode called 'Chihuahuas From Hell' showed a Chihuahua named 'El Diablo' who controlled all the dogs at a pit bull sanctuary. This goes to prove that its not size but energy that controls dogs. I think small dogs get away with behaviour that larger dogs could never get away with. People focus on their cuteness and don't discipline them equally (thinking they might somehow hurt their little dogs). They can become spoiled and aggressive because they don't have boundaries and limitations. Some people don't see small dogs as dogs, they become their babies/children. Dogs need to be fulfilled as dogs otherwise they lose their identity. When it comes to breed its important to look at what the dogs have been breed for. Herding dogs may not feel challenged if their herding instincts aren't fulfilled. Hunting dogs, tracking dogs, dogs trained to do jobs need stimulation to fulfill that side of themselves. Walks, games and even using outside sources (like where professionals have dogs herd sheep or track stuff) can help meet a dog's needs. At dog parks your dog will sense the energy of other dogs. Some they may be uncomfortable with and then you should observe the behaviour of those dogs to learn what energy is not good for your dogs. I would never avoid a dog based on its breed but on its behaviour and that of its owners. If the owners are talking on a cell phone and ignoring their dog completely their dog is left up to its own common sense which sometimes isn't there.

Actually feed a large breed growth formula, not regular puppy food. These are formulated for optimal bone health. As long as you spay her before the first heat cycle, you are still greatly reducing the chances of mammary tumors later in life. In large breed dogs, the first heat cycle can occur anywhere between 6 and 18 months of age. There is no definitive proof that spay/neuter at a certain age increases risk of bone problems later in life. However there is no denying that sex hormones affect growth. We just don't know exactly what, if any, the effect of early spay/neuter is on dogs who are at high risk for joint problems anyway. All giant breed dogs are genetically predisposed to all kinds of orthopedic problems. I personally believe that optimal nutrition throughout life, never allowing the dog to become overweight, and lots of moderate exercise have much more effect on orthopedic health than when the animal is spayed/neutered. The larger the dog, the more difficult the spay. Younger dogs tend to wake up faster and do much better under anesthesia than larger and older dogs. At the shelter, we routinely spay and neuter at 8 weeks, so every animal leaving the shelter is already spayed/neutered.

Different females, different body chemistries, different estrous cycles. It's altogether possible (probable, in fact, given no existing spay scar) that your dog is intact and in heat. I'd err on the side of caution and have the surgery scheduled. At worst, the vet will make a small incision, see that she's already been spayed, and close her right back up. While that's certainly not ideal, it's a better scenario than leaving her intact and vulnerable to developing mammary cancer later in life as a result of not being spayed early enough to help prevent it. hmmmmm, Great Danes must be nice doggies, just so dratted BIG. I can't imagine living with one. Just think of our poor spouses!

For pity's sake I am a beagle, the last dog on earth I'd have thunk, or wanted to be. I blame it on the questions, because in the majority of them I wouldn't have picked any of the answers they had. I suspect I know which questions placed me in that catagory. It was fun, anyway. If I really had to pick out the dog I think fits me I'd have gone with something like a dobe I guess or yeah, even a dane.

Speaking of danes, my parents had a dane as I was growing up. Smart, gentle dogs for the most part, but they are handsful by their sheer size. I had bruises on my legs constantly where the dog would be so happy, he whipped legs with his tail when wagging it.

I'm a Golden Retriever,, but here is a caveat: the score is based on purebreds, and I am at least part cow-dog - so I'm a Mutt LOL

Holy Smoke! I ended up as a Norwich Terrier! A pretty cute little dog, but I'm not sure I liked all the personality traits the test says I have. Oh well, it sure gives me something to think about!

Golden Retriever here, but I can't imagine owning one of those big things no matter how nice they are==and they are nice.

Golden Retriever...that figures,doesn't it? Interesting though. Take it again and see if you are asked the exact same questions. I did it 3 times and each time there were new questions.

Golden Retriever here& that's fine with me. If I ever own a pure breed it will be a Golden or a Lab. Dogs should be big. I can't stand those yappy ankle biters.

The questions were a little off but at first I was a GR and then a Great Dane.

I'd really like to be more like Chelsea, my little Toy Poodle. She's smart, beautiful, loyal, happy where she is, doesn't YAP, has such a fighting spirit and carries herself like the Royalty she is.

I am a Great Dane. I love those dogs. They just don't live long enough and I ball my eyes out and get depressed for a long, long time after I loose a pet. I need one to live at least 15 years.
