What is your favorite dog breed?

I love dobermann pinschers. i just got my baby Princess (a dober-girl) about a year ago and she is the coolest dog ever. so smart and mischevious but still sweet and playful. unlike the perception of most people, the "meanness" was bred out of dobermanns years ago and now they are great family dogs who become VERY attached to their owners and don't like to be seperated from them.

I have a springer spaniel and a labrador retriever, and had a golden retriever. Great breeds! But I'd LOVE to get a doberman for my next dog - they are smart and sleek, and as you say, their temperments are much better for not being so popular. I wouldn't crop the ears though, I think the look is much softer natural.

Wow rude replies. The OP stated wanting a dog that would get along with her dog, so it wasn't like they just wanted to get rid of the beagle. I am not a senior but I know plenty that walk by my house and just enjoy the company of a dog on their walks. Beagle and other hounds pull a lot more than other breeds and it is very difficult to stop. Hounds follow their nose. You can train your beagle, several options including a no pull harness (a standard harness will encourage pulling), a gentle leader, or a pinch collar. Used properly all are effective and humane. As for other breeds, you could take your pick of smaller breeds, a pug, maltese, bichon frise, italian greyhound. Even a small beagle.There are two standards for beagles and the small ones don't get over 20lbs. Your beagle is large for a beagle.

Actually feed a large breed growth formula, not regular puppy food. These are formulated for optimal bone health. As long as you spay her before the first heat cycle, you are still greatly reducing the chances of mammary tumors later in life. In large breed dogs, the first heat cycle can occur anywhere between 6 and 18 months of age. There is no definitive proof that spay/neuter at a certain age increases risk of bone problems later in life. However there is no denying that sex hormones affect growth. We just don't know exactly what, if any, the effect of early spay/neuter is on dogs who are at high risk for joint problems anyway. All giant breed dogs are genetically predisposed to all kinds of orthopedic problems. I personally believe that optimal nutrition throughout life, never allowing the dog to become overweight, and lots of moderate exercise have much more effect on orthopedic health than when the animal is spayed/neutered. The larger the dog, the more difficult the spay. Younger dogs tend to wake up faster and do much better under anesthesia than larger and older dogs. At the shelter, we routinely spay and neuter at 8 weeks, so every animal leaving the shelter is already spayed/neutered.

Many unfortunate dogs and puppies registered with AKC can be found on Craig's List. Craig's List does not breed dogs, nor do those who advertise an AKC pup on Craig's List. All of these dogs came from a litter bred by an AKC breeder, and somehow ended up in the hands of an irresponsible owner, because no responsible owner would re-home a dog via Craig's List. The AKC is a registry and it is not their job to create or evaluate breeding programs. The parent clubs of each of the 220+ AKC breeds are responsible for writing and maintaining the breed standards, and individual AKC breeders are responsible for their breeding programs and genetic testing. AKC's responsibilities do extend to the conditions in which dogs registered with them are kept. Many of the highly publicized busts of puppymills have occurred as results of investigations by the AKC. Typically PETA, HSUS, and other animal rights groups expropriate the media spotlight, but it has often been AKC who began investigations and legal proceedings. This is yet another reason why few, if any, puppymills today register their dogs with AKC. If you don't believe me, go into any pet store and ask to see the paperwork. You will find their puppies are registered with a bogus registry such as Continental Kennel Club or American Purebred Registry.

I love the herding breeds, especially if they have pointy ears. :) But the herding dogs are good multipurpose dogs. Look at all the border collies doing agility. My dogs do agility, tracking, obedience and eating!

My first dog as an adult was a Doberman. Then a Doberman/Rottweiler mix. Then 2 Rottweilers. Now a Rottweiler mix and one I call a tiny Rottweiler.

My sis has a black and tan mini doxie I call a mini Rottweiler.

I guess I'm drawn to black and tan.

Pugs, Pugs ,Pugs !! I have four, they are so humane like. I also have a pitbull who I love to death also. She is the sweetest and funniest thing. Don`t believe what you hear about that breed either. Not an agressive bone in her body, everyone who meets her falls in love. I do however never ever leave my pugbugs alone with her, safty first !!

Collies all the way. We had them growing up in our family and now continue that tradition with my own family. A more intelligent, loyal and protective friend you just won't find. They are the greatest! NancyLouise

Beagles. I would have 10 if I thought I could handle that much energy. They're mischevious, and definately sneaky little things. But they never get in bad moods, are constantly doing something amusing (albeit naughty, most of the time) and they're so full of love.

And boxer-pitbulls. Ours is like a lazy teenager now in his old age. Gotta drag his tired head out of bed somedays to make him go outside, and somedays he'll walk out and come right back in if its cold. He thinks he's a giant lap dog, too. Not a mean bone in them. And he's still full of puppy-like energy, if you can drag him out of bed.

Border Collies here, grew up with them, always had them.
Next on my list is any other collie, from a Sheltie to a Scotch Lassie and everyone inbetween.

I LOVE mutts! Especially if the have Shepard in them. I have found the Shepard very caring and guarding. Definitely my kind of dog!

Great Danes are my breed of choice for the past 43 years. But I also like Scottish Deerhounds, Greyhounds and Whippets.

I've got a different one - the Chinese Shar Pei. WHY - you ask?? My answer is that I love the Shar Pei because this is a breed that needs our love - many go blind due to neglect!

I also just adopted a wonderful boxer from the shelter. He would have been put down for a swollen hock! My heart beats wildly whenever I see this boxer-man - he's totally sweet.

Herding breed mixes and Dalmatians are my favorites. We have two Dals, a Black Lab/Shepherd mix and what we think is a Sheltie/Border Collie mix.

German shepherds are some of the most beautiful and intelligent dogs but I've had bad luck with the pure-breeds. Even though I did my research and found 2 recommended breeders through breed clubs, both girls had aggression problems. The first had fear aggression and the second tried to kill my other dogs once she turned 3 years old.

Basset hounds.My next dog will be a bloodhound hopefully.I like dogs with the long droopy ears and sad eyes.

German Shepherds always.

Rottweilers a fairly close second.

Not a fan of little dogs. Some are absolutely adorable and I love visiting them, but they're not for me full time.

I love Mutts! Especially if they have some herding breeds in them. Right now I have an Aussie mix and a lab/shepherd mix.

I also have a soft spot in my heart for pit bulls and pugs. I love some of the larger breeds like Mastiffs and Great Danes, but wish they lived longer.

Are ya'll trying to say that there are breeds besides Dobermans?

Out of the breeds I've had Dobes, Akitas and Chows are my favorites. Breeds I've never had but would like to are Tibetan Mastiff, Belgian Malinois, Giant Schnauzer, Standard Poodle, Kerry Blue Terrier or Wire Fox Terrier
