I Want This Rose, Really Bad!!!

I'm just kind of impatient, for new DA roses. I know I'm

being a brat, but I was hoping that Princess Alexandra of

Kent, would be available this year. I thought J&P would

have an exclusive on it before general release, which I

guess is next year. I almost feel like flying to England to

get one and smuggling it into the country. But I believe in

upholding the laws of our country, so I won't(lol).

I REALLY WANT IT!

We are very honoured to name this rose for Princess Alexandra, who is a cousin to Queen Elizabeth II. She is a keen gardener and great lover of roses.

The rose that bears her name has unusually large flowers of a warm, glowing pink. They are full-petalled and deeply cupped in shape, all enclosed in a ring of outer petals of a softer pink; creating a most pleasing effect. In spite of their size, they are never clumsy; being held nicely poised on a well-rounded shrub of 3.5 ft. in height and 2.5 ft. across. Because of their size, there is a lot to be said for planting in groups of three, keeping both flowers and growth nicely balanced. They have a delicious fresh Tea fragrance which, interestingly, changes completely to lemon as the flower ages Â eventually taking on additional hints of blackcurrants. It is very healthy.

JIM, I got my Brother Cadfael from David Austin. I got a
good one because it stays healthy and keeps blooming. A
good amount of blooms for it's first year. It can only get
better. Great fragrance too. The bush is handsome as well.
I'll recheck my emails, to see if yours is there. I get alot on
some days and it takes time to get to them.

Opulence" next year. We will welcome this Princess, with
open arms to America.

When I have a rose or daylily [or other plant] that has a light green tint to it, I mix up a powdered iron supplement [cant recall the name of it now, but can probably get it at Lowes] with water, and water the plant well. It doesn't take long for it to green up and usually only takes one treatment. For holes in leaves, it could be june bugs [I killed one munching on a rose last night] or catapillars [they defoliated a rose completely - I sprayed and it has grown back its foliage]. For that, I spray with Safer insect spray - comes in spray bottle at Walmart. For blackspot, I have read that spraying every 3-4 days for 4 times with Mancozeb, then start the Bayer spray program. I understand and appreciate those who don't wish to spray, but I do spray - not on a regular basis due to being busy with other things, but I am trying to get on a regular schedule. In my area, don't have to do it much after it gets hot. I have horses, so have lots of mature compost. I have found one of the best fertilizers I can use is to put several shovelfuls of this rotted compost on my roses. I have seen it, with time, bring them into peak performance. If you know anyone with a farm or stable, you might check into getting some. I am going to topdress more of mine today. As it rains or when you water, it leaks the nutrients down to the roots. I have a Golden Celebration that has limped along for several years. Last fall I dumped a bunch of compost on it - it is now bigger and totally full of buds, more than it has had in the years it has been in the ground. I try to topdress all my flower beds spring and fall with a 2" layer of it - and my soil in those beds is wonderful. Good luck! Your rose looks like it wants to grow. Judith

Any rootstock better than own-root if I can't get multiflora?

Personally, I recommend going own root. I've found that potting small own root roses in one gallon pots then moving them up to a larger pot, before planting in the ground, gives me a larger plant sooner. My last summer's rooted cuttings overwintered in a cold frame in my unheated greenhouse and repotted into one gallon pots in March are almost full sized plants. It's said that crowding the roots gives a bigger plant sooner. Instant gratification with a grafted rose is not that important to me. I'd rather wait a few months for the own root to catch up.

Devon, if you like that shade of pink, you might like Bishop's Castle. Fragrance is just wonderful, beautiful blooms.

One thing I am doing is buying an Austin rose of one color and also getting a Kordes rose of the similar color for comparison performance in my summer blast furnace climate. Why not try the same thing in your coastal climate just for fun while waiting? If you like the pink, have a look at Palatine's at the Cinderella Fairy Tale and Pink Flower Circus roses. Pick one and grow it while you are waiting for the Austin rose as a comparison basis for which will do better in your conditions. For me, the Austins are very iffy as to who does well and who does not. I have somewhat better success with the Kordes roses in general, but not across the board. It's just an idea.

trying that one this season, for sure.

BUSTOPHER, thanks for the suggestions. I am so particular
about which roses I want, though. I do think Kordes has some
great roses.

Devon - if you do kinda happen to go to England, bring me back a Summer Song DA, will you? It's not available until at least nexst year also. I have it on order from Hortico, but who knows when it will be available. I'm just like you, I was all ready to buy it a seat on the next flight from England (sigh). I only wanted one itty bitty plant.

Devon, I was seriously thinking of begging my coworker to smuggle one home in her purse the next time she traveled to England. Connie always brings back wine for one of the other gals, and I thought, "what's one little rose for me?" I used to obsess over purses....not so much anymore. I've graduated to roses. Traded one obsession for another.
Let me know if you have any success. Does Hortico have yours available for order?

I privately emailed you but guess it didn't go through. Enjoyed your thread on Brothr Cadfael; had one but lost it due to my neglect. Where did you purchase yours; I understand how you feel about Princess Alexandra because that is how I feel about him and want a good plant. Loved the Brother Cadfael mystery series also. Read all the books.

Chelsea Flower Show. It is from DA's photo's, featuring English
Roses at the show. I hope to one day attend the Chelsea Flower
Show. Wouldn't that be awesome?

If I have to say which of the Austins I am eagerly waiting for it would have to be the apricot Port Sunlight and the white Claire Austin. I would really like to see them. The white ones seem to tolerate our conditions a little better than some of the others.

Devon I have a weakness for big,pink, fragrant roses, of course now I am longing for this rose so please sneak in another for me would ya! LOL BEautiful. Sometimes here in Canada we can get one of those Austins from Pickering or Hortico a year earlier. You can bet if it is available next year I will be one of the first to order it. Thanks for the pics.
