As the slideshow starts out, you see the placement of where the bathroom is being built. Next, deconstruction is carried out by moi. The blue "tiles" are actually a wallpaper layer that was under the wood paneling! Tile wallpaper, who-da thunk it? As is typical of all construction we encountered oddities which have to worked around, and for this bathroom it was concrete blocks in the walls and huge rotted part in the floor. After Middle Ed pulled up the flooring, Lil' Ed is the one who took all of the nails out (note his safety gear, "mom's must" and dad is agreeing), measured all of the boards and then marked them. ME cut them and nailed them in. We want our house to be as green as possible and always recycle whatever we can. The boards used on the flooring are the former wall. We also used them to fur the wall to make it level enough for the haridbacker on the back of the wall. Hardibacker is now on all the shower walls ready for tiling.

Great progress Robin, it's wonderful that you and Ed can do this yourself.
Boy the stuff one finds when one starts a remodel.
It bogles the mind that folks will cover stuff up rather
than do it right.

Yesterday morning I got the call from H#!! about our house.
I had Steve tear out some new plywood flooring in the
sitting room because when I pulled the carpet out, there
was a dark spot indicating a water stain. He called and
said there was a rotten sill and he was replacing it.
I've learned that with this place if it has anything new
the previous owners put in that it is covering something
up.

We closed on our house yesterday, we no longer own a
lakehouse. I look for the place to be flooded with people
by the weekend. That's always the way it is when you sell
a house and then have to rent it for awhile til you can
move. They will be here cutting trees and measuring windows
and floors and driving me crazy.

Lucky you, Robin you moved into your house right away.
I can't wait to see the pictures of your new bath.
Good idea letting little feller help out.

I'd put the fan on a separate switch from the rest of the lights. Are there lights in the closet, too? I love your layout. Have you considered putting a linear drain in the shower so that you don't have the drain in the middle?

You should not have to do that...you are simply wasting water. In addition, running water from all of your taps would do nothing to protect the toilet supply lines...and I bet those haven't frozen, right? What you do need to do is inspect where the lines run. If this is something you can't do yourself, get someone to do it. I live in the Pacific NW, too, and my old house had no wall insulation where the pipes ran; nothing ever froze What you have to understand is that pipes in uninsulated walls are typically at a temperature at least midway between the inside temperature and the outside temperature. So, if you kept the house at 65 F and the temperature outside was at 0 F you'd still not have to worry about freezing. And whenever you run some water during the day, the ground temp is usually about 50-55 F in our area, so that warms the pipes. You will only have problems if you have pipes under the house that are not protected or running through the attic that are above the insulation. I doubt that any of your other neighbors feels a need to do this to keep their pipes from freezing. If you do an inspection, you can resolve this for good, rather than continue worrying about something that is unlikely to be a problem. If you want to reassure yourself, get a dial thermometer and leave the water to the taps shut off all night. Then open a tap and run the water in the morning and check the temperature. I bet it will be way above freezing, even in one of our cold snaps.

So I took most of your advice in the last few days. I added a runner rug, changed up soap bottles, added a basket, added art over bathtub, painted grout to make tile look new and added other decor. Does it look any better? Anything else you would add? Last question - how would you add two framed mirrors over my cabinets since they're at different heights? One counter is much longer than the other and I think it would look a bit odd if both mirrors were the same size. Perhaps I could add a long rectangular one over the long counter and an oval one over the small counter?

Rob, I'm so impressed with the work you guys are doing...what wonderful work and wonderful memories. Good job, I'm proud of you.

Tile wallpaper is still around - usually in what is called a dresden design I believe - but it is amazing what gets found as the layers are peeled off in a remodel.

Holy moley, you folks are making progress! Quickly, too! This home will become another family point of pride... for a reason. LF is lucky he is at an age where he can participate. Those memories will warm him for a lifetime.

And I thought getting our house built was hard work. WOW!! You guys are great! I think it's wonderful that the whole family is working on it.

Thanks Rebecca! Necessity is the mother of invention. While we do want LF to feel a part of what is going on and give him something to do with those busy hands, we're just too poor to hire out work. Shoot, we even had slave labor the other night. My eldest brother Mark, master electrician, after paid work, working on our house:
