Hi everyone. Folks encouraged me to post on this forum as I grow David Austin roses in my teeny tiny back yard (and now starting to move them to the front yard after years of resisting). Love big cabbage roses. I have Brother Cadfael, Jude the Obscure, Evelyn, Sharifa Asma, Emily, Ambridge, Mary Webb, Peach Blossom and other assorted mini's from Roger Moore's nursery (before he passed).

I just ordered for my small long beds in the front, Pretty Jessica, Munstead Wood and Princess of Alexandra. I have mixed borders with day lillies, lavendar, salvia, iris, etc. in the front.

I also grow fruit trees (mini) in my tiny back yard along with some veggies in pots during the summer. I will see if I can post some pictures I have taken. Please ignore the date on the camera, I don't know how to change it to the current date. I am also trying to post more than one picture but it doesn't seem to work for me.

Welcome. Sounds like you know how to maximize space. I bet it's beautiful. I call roses the jewels of the garden.
Is the rose in the photo Jude theObscure? I planted him in June of 2011. The smell is divine. For me he is a slow grower..that's ok. Worth the wait.

Just received 2 apple trees..Liberty and Chehalis. Expecting 2 more apple trees. Then my tiny orchard will be complete. Gardening is such fun. What kind of fruit trees do you grow?

Welcome! Your garden sounds lovely - do you have any pictures of whole areas of the back or the front yards that you could post? If not, please take some in the Spring to post on here - gardening in a small space is an art, and we would love to see yours.

I have only 1/3rd of an acre lot, and much of it is taken up with the house and a long driveway, but sometimes that seems like too much space, like now, when I am just getting around to pruning our 100+ roses.

I live in the SF Bay area - lots of folks on here are from CA - are you in No CA or South? Looking forward to more pictures of your garden -

I see there is a public sidewalk so your guests will be fine. Good question about a walk to the driveway - will you need that? If so, that could anchor/shape your plan on that side. I think the question that is pestering me is whether this house needs foundation planting at all. And if so, if whether roses (if those are the roses photoshopped in there) perform this function well. Only under that arched window is it clear to me that a plant would be a good thing. Other than that, I might consider pulling the beds away from the house. Sometimes it helps to think instead of what lawn shape you want. You sound as if you change houses often. If you plan a resale, then uninspired is fine. If you plan to be here a while, then at least get plants you like... you can always move them around a bit. I agree a visit to a couple of local nurseries would be your best starting point. Finally, that tree is nice but might be a little close to the house. KarinL

Hi Connie, I am not familiar with Buttons n Bows. A new to me Camellia that I highly recommend to my rose loving friend is Winter's Rose. It is a dwarf camellia with lovely light pink flowers. It has been covered with flowers for the last few weeks. Winter Snowman is one that grows very upright for me. It blooms for about six weeks in November and December. I visited Camellia Forest in NC for their annual open house last year and picked up several that are doing well. They have a large selection of cold hardy plants. One that they highly recommended for cold hardiness is Gov. Mouton. I will have to check out Little Five Azalea Farm. Depends on your conditions really. There is no best mix to repot them. As long as it drains freely and stays on the moist side anything is ok. I've grown Miranda in a variety of mixes over the years, it isn't particular. Most of my Nepenthes are in some combination of cocohusk chunks, orchid bark, charcoal, perlite, long fibered spaghnum moss. If you grow it inside you may need more sphagnum in your mix or need to water it more often if your mix is less moisture retaining. If you plan to grow it outside and it's humid where you are you can get away with less sphag to none. Miranda is a good plant to experiment on and learn what mix is best for your particular conditions and growing style. Just know that it will probably sulk, stop pitchering and growing temporarily after a repot. That's normal, they don't like to be messed with, so don't assume it didn't like what you repotted it in right away. Give it a few months before you decide you've made a mistake and want to re-repot it if it still isn't happy.

"Blood ties have nothing to do with it." My point exactly (see my previous post "Attachments"). I have two male cousins who divorced their first wives. I love my cousins but also cared deeply for the women to whom they were married. I still consider them family. They are welcome in my home. I visit them when I am back there. My relationship to them, my consideration of them as "family" does not alter the fact that they are no longer "family" to their ex-spouses. My one cousin refused to speak to his mother (my aunt) for an extended period of time because, like Kathline's X-MIL, she refused to renounce his XW. Her attitude was "You divorced her. I didn't." Eventually, my cousin got over himself and reconciled with his mom. In my post on another thread, I wrote that mothers and their children are and always will be family to one another; that fathers and their children will always be family to one another. In writing this, I was simply acknowledging a biological bond; in writing that XWs & XHs are no longer family to each other, I was referring to a "legal" attachment. (For those of you who did not read that earlier thread of mine, I suggested we can become attached/bonded to others on as many as seven different levels: emotional, spiritual, legal, financial, sexual, geographical, and biological/parental. We do not necessarily become attached to others on all 7 dimensions and the intensity of the attachment may be differ, also). I believe it was KKNY who responded to the post with something along the lines of "when ex-spouses share children, there will always be a relationship between them. I agree. And I would hope for the sake of any shared children, the relationship would be cooperative and cordial. It just strikes me as ironic (and somewhat contradictory) that some would deny the validity of the loving attachments that can and do exist between Stepparents and their stepchildren because of the absence of a biological bond but will vehemently insist that the bonds they have to the biological relatives of their former spouses remain valid and deserving of respect and recognition. Because, after all, "blood ties have nothing to do with it." I agree.

Hi, I'm glad you've made it over the to antique side also. You might even find that some of the older roses meet your specifications. Not all of them are huge, such as the polyanthas and the smaller Bourbons, and they can be very rewarding. One rose I love is La France, which for me is growing slowly, but with wonderful and very fragrant large flowers. I'm glad you garden organically and use bands, both of which many of us here do. I hope you'll enjoy the people and the information you'll find here.

Jeannie 2009, the rose in the picture is Ambridge Rose. My Jude the Obscure gets very leggy even though I prune very heavily in the winter. After all of the hype about him, he is not one of my favorites.

Jacqueline3, I will try to post a picture of my back yard. Again, ignore the date as I don't know how to change the thing. I am in central CA.

Ingrid--would love to see pictures! Sounds lovely!

Rosefolly--I am starting to do just that! I ordered 3 Munstead Woods, 3 Pretty Jessica's and 3 Princess Alexandra of Kent. I started three Brother Cadfael's on their own root in the front as well. I will see if any of them take. If so, then I will probably start a Lavendar Crystal (mini) on its own root out there too. I have been successful in growing that one on its own root in the past. Love the purple color and it does very well in our heat.

I second Sherry. It's really beautiful. Perhaps some of the concrete pavers might be taken up to make room for yet more roses? Just kidding....We'll stop at almost nothing.

Love your back yard, must. Looking forward to seeing the front yard. We also like "in progress" pics, so feel free to post those also.

If you post through GW, you can only do one pic per post--although you can post multiple times.

What many of us do is get a free account at photobucket.com and upload our pics there for storage. Then we can copy the HTML CODE and insert it in this forum's message box--and insert as many HTML CODES here as we desire. (You can type before and after each insert also.)

Either way, we promise to enjoy your pics.

What a lovely, romantic walled garden you have! There is one plant hanging over the wall on the right with a dark pink bloom. I can't tell from the pic what it is - is it a rose?

Jac, that is a rose bloom from my neighbor's yard. He has, I think a climbing Joseph's Coat--at least that is what it looks like to me.

Thank you all for the very nice compliments and how to upload photos. I am trying to set up a photobucket album but for some reason, the pictures are not uploading into photobucket. UGH! I do have a better picture of the back somewhere and will try to post it. I know it is hard to see the backyard because it looks so far away in the picture.

OK, I tried this before and my message went poof and disappeared. Here it is again. Thank you all for your help. My MacAfee is giving me fits with the photobucket. The first picture should be a rose I got when Roger Moore (I think that was his name) retired from Sequoia Nursery when he was 99 years old. It is a large flowered mini rose that climbs to be over 15 feet tall. I wish I could remember its name. Had to threaten to SP it in order to get it to grow.
