OK, I did the repot, and after soaking the rootball in a weak physan solution, found that rottage had reduced the root mass so signficantly that I was able to repot in a MUCH smaller pot -- 4" across, pretty deep. I did a pretty perlite-heavy mixture (betwen 2:1 and 3:1 miracle gro mix:perlite, respectively). A little concerned I packed it tight, but at least the roots are getting a chance to dry out now. The plant seems to be stable -- still not healthy, but no fast death from root rot/soaked soil like before. I will post updates for those who wonder (1) whether I ruined the plant by dunking its roots in the weak fungicide for a bit and (2) whether (at least in this case) it has been possible to rescue a severly aging peace lilly via root trim and transplantation in faster-draining-soil. If you are hot-packing peaches and some float during packing, they will sink as weights equalize while sitting on the shelf. Just "accept" (in a Zen sort of way) and let time take care of the majority of the problem instead of trying to wrestle more peaches into the jar. They'll also taste better because they'll be more fully bathed in the syrup. If the seal holds then they're fine. One way to check (if you have the nerve) is to hold the jar upside down over a deep bowl. Carol

The second is Euphorbia aeruginosa. No a cactus but a succulent in the Spurge family from South Africa. The white latex sap that will "bleed" from the plant is very irritating to some people and may cause a rash or a nasty dermatitis.
