I know the group of deer I see comes at dusk and the dogs go nuts barking at the dining room window between 12:30 and 1 every night. Also the first night (about 3 weeks ago) I had water in the pond a deer fell in- there was a hoof slide and print mark in the bottom. He must run thru there often and was surprized by the new pond. I watched the water levelfor a few days after to make sure my liner was not damaged.
My yard is always full of deer prints, I have 90 ac of woods and wetland behind me. I don't think deer could drink that much in a night though. My new water is still too green to see if anything has fallen in recently.
I refilled 5 hours ago and still no loss yet. If I have to keep toping off like this I'm afraid my water will never clear!

Don't tell the kids, they'll never help with the pond again!

Are there deer or other animal prints around your pond? I used to have a neighbor's dog who liked to get in my little pond in the front yard. Can you sprinkle flour on the ground around your pond at night & check it the next morning to see who is visiting?

The infamous chupcabra are a likely culprit. Have you seen any prints resembling these around your pond? They come out of lakes at night to drink from Koi ponds and suck the life from goats.

Seriously you might try putting a net over it during the night just to see if it is deer or something draining it. You can buy netting cheaply at Home Depot. When I bought mine it was about $12 a roll which is 100 feet by I think 12 or 15.
