Question on lights from Orchid newbie

I bought my first orchids about a month ago and ordered grow lights online. I've used lights on a lot of other kinds of plants and always kept them about 4 inches above the top of the plants and I'm thinking that probably applies to the orchids as well. The lights I ordered were made to mount on stands (so that I can set them on shelves in front of the picture window in my living room). They were NOT as tall as I had pictured them in my mind. I must not have read the descriptions too well at all, because they are actually only 17 inches high, not nearly as tall as the orchids when they are blooming. It occurred to me that the leaves are probably what absorb the light anyway. My question - would having the lights directed at the green leaves rather then above the blossums wor ok?
