Orchid Newbie

I had someone give me an orchid, I think a phal, for Mother's Day. So far, I have done nothing but kill orchids. One was planted in moss, which retained too much water and the poor thing didn't make it. Another I repotted in an orchid bark medium, but kept losing leaves. When I checked the roots, they were brown and not viable. I moved it to a lower light condition after cutting off all the dead stuff, but it didn't make it.

Now, I really want to keep this last one alive. The leaves are fairly dark in color. I'll post pictures when I get a chance. It's in its original pot with the same medium that it came in. I water it maybe once a week and fertilize it about once a month with fertilizer labeled for orchids. What I can't seem to get right is the lighting. It keeps sending out new roots and leaves, but the leaves turn from new growth green to a dark purplish color. Is this too much light or not enough?
