Name That Plant!

Any experts know what these 2 plants are growing in my yard?

I have these two plants growing in my back yard. One grows close to the ground and has pretty little flowers and the other one is a little bush growing in the front of my house and it has gotten bigger each year ive been living here.
Does anyone know what they are?

Two Chinese plants - first one is Chinese holly, Ilex cornuta and the second is dayflower, Commelina communis, which is generally considered a weed.

Ceth, the plants looked very healthy at 25 days... so the question would be, what changed after that time? It sounds like bad weather is the most likely explanation for the chlorosis. Yardlongs thrive in heat & full sun, and plentiful moisture... as long as the soil is well drained. Cool nights & excessively cloudy days would slow them down. As a rule, beans don't need nitrogen, so I would avoid applying manure around them. Fresh manure, in particular, can cause root damage. Applying wood ashes directly to the soil around living plants is generally not a good idea. The ashes are highly alkaline, and can burn roots. But your observations make me wonder. Tropical soils are often acidic (low pH) and wood ashes would increase the soil pH. If you can test your soil pH, I would recommend doing so. Wood ashes in moderate amounts would help to neutralize acidity, but the best time to apply them would be to dig them in several weeks before planting, which would hopefully give them time to dissolve. I grow many different yardlongs here, most are varieties from Southeast Asia or the Philippines. Those that are not daylength sensitive generally do well for me. They only grow when the weather is warm, though; because of my short growing season, I can only harvest beans for a month or two. While I have been to Southeast Asia many times, and am familiar with your climate, I don't have experience gardening there... so that is the best advice I can offer.

i see you got an answer in the conifer forum ... Platycladus or some such ... frankly.. i have no clue on how they came to that decision based on these pix ... better pix would nail it down.. especially if it has those weirdo Platycladus cones ... see link i would have looked at the grave stones.. to get an idea of how many decades it took for this thing to grow.. and be pruned into this form ...i am thinking.. 30 to 50 years .. in my MI anyway ... maybe it will grow faster in your zone ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

I am not an expert, but your first plant is a holly of some kind- maybe an Asian holly? I should know what kind, because it's pretty common, but I don't.

Your second plant looks like Common Dayflower (Commelina communis), which is an Asian import.

I'm sure a real expert will come along to let you know more.

Definitely a weed here in my New England gardens. Yes, pretty little blue flowers and grows like crazy.

The Ilex cornuta might be 'Burford' or 'Dwarf Burford'. Just trim it back a few inches if you don't want it to expand as quickly as it is.

In AR, there are 3 native Commelinas (according to USDA plants database,) as well as 2 non-native ones. This pic of your plant is inconclusive as it doesn't show a bloom clearly.

This pic does not have enough info to determine a species, that's all I meant to add to the discussion, in case the OP is interested in keeping it *if* it is a native.

For some mysterious reason, unknown Commelina is almost always diagnosed as an exotic one, C. communis in particular, with no mention that there are native ones, and other exotics. It would be a shame for anyone to eradicate a plant they liked strictly on the basis that they were told it's not a native plant.
