what's with these wrinkled droopy leaves?

This is only the second orchid I ever bought. It was a discount and needed to be repotted. I've seen other orchids with droopy, wrinkled leaves. Is that reversible and does it matter? Thanks.

I have several phals and mine usually exhibit the "wrinkle" symptom when it is thirsty. The floppiness of the leaves I believe is more genetic. As the plant perks up however, maybe after a season of better growing conditions, the new leaves will be more upright.

Since you have a rescue plant, can you send a pic of the root system? It showing symptoms of thirst can be either lack of water or root rot and their inability to uptake water efficiently.

Post a pic of the potting mix as well and describe your growing location so we can better advise on watering habits.

well, soil retains water - so if you create a mix that contains soil (I think of that as the soil backing/or base) - then the other components ... the perlite, or bark, or rocks - well that's the extras. :) ... Now if you have a mix without soil - then peat would be the component to 'hold' the water... but if you have soil in there. Doesn't it do it already? why add peat too? I mean, you're talking in a pot - you water it often enough that if you're looking for the absorbtion component in peat - soil kinda' does that. - most often you don't want to much water retention in a pot. - now if you were saying mixing the peat in your garden bed - then I'd be a bit more understanding. Can't stand hosing the yard any more than necessary. I'm NOT an expert. REALLY. And I constantly show where my knowledge is lacking. I try to make sense of these mixes and goodness knows - I'm glad for folks like AL who can reason out how all the stuff works ... cause my mind can only wrap around so much info at once - and then I need my buddies to lead me through it when it gets to complicated. Thank goodness for GW and the good friends I've made here. :)

Hi loresgardens - welcome to the forum. A picture of your plumie is always the best for us to diagnos the problem. But I will give it a try anyway. If the leaves droops and the stem have shrivel/wrinkle a bit, then it's thirsty. The solution is water well OR soak in a bucket or something that will hold a large amount of water...within an hour or two, the stems will be firm and the leaves will perk up. Also, your plumie most likely is root bound and need to be pot up. For me, I believe that the bigger the pot, the better. Kasie

TY. "The thing that gets them is wet and cold." Well said! "Feels lighter" sounds good. A dense, moisture-retentive soil is heavy for the same volume, like you said. My budget dictates that the specialized stuff I use is either winging it by mixing up compost from the yard, stealing a little aged mulch from a flower bed, or buying bags that say cactus/palm soil instead of potting soil. But no matter what the writing says, if it's a giant bag that I can pick up w/o help, I know it's going to be better. I'd never be able to heft a giant bag of potting soil (assuming you also shop where these things are outside, moist from getting rained on.) "Is regular potting soil really so bad if you don't water too often?" Not watering often is the method for coping with soils one fears might rot the roots if moist constantly. There is no requirement for forcing plants to grow as fast as they can, and this is a fine technique that many have mad skills at. I never could catch on, I like to water plants. You can get started in the right direction with a pot of any stuff by leaving it fluffy, not packed down, watering gently so it doesn't compact later. Any pot that's not too big to pick up can also be "weighed" to see if it feels lighter yet, than right after it was watered. I haven't seen bent leaves straighten, but curious to hear what others have to say about that too. Some people stake them. Either way, no individual leaf actually lasts forever. If/when you decide you'd enjoy looking at it more without 1 or more of its' leaves, you can cut them off & use them to make more plants, lots of discussions & pics about that here. That's fun too. If everybody did everything the same way, there would be 1 thin book, and nothing for us to talk about. You'll find what work for you, which could be different than what works for me or someone else.

It looks pretty good to me. It's not unusual for Begonias to act somewhat seasonally &/or lean toward the light when one has to bring them inside for winter, depending on the conditions you have to offer. Although Begonias prefer mostly shade while outside for summer, a lot more light is usually needed to keep them looking great (like yours) over winter at high latitudes. The short days, weak rays, and short duration of direct sun through most windows can sometimes be barely enough. If your plant had sunburned, it would have been more than 1 little spot, likely showing on most surfaces on the sunny side of the plant. When cut, the stump will usually regrow 1 or more new tops, and the roots also usually grow 1 or more new stems. It's easy to turn 1 plant into a full, lush pot over a summer. For now, you could remove a leaf or two from the low side to alleviate some of the weight. There is a Begonia forum here too, if you want to check that out.

Well it definently had root rot. That's why I left all those upper roots out of the moss.

If it has root rot, you should amend the growing mix. Use fresh, new sphagnum, and mix it 50/50 with bark. Struggling roots need more air. But they also dont adapt as well as healthy roots, so you dont want to put them straight into bark if they are used to sphagnum. That sphagnum looks very soggy :-( no good...

It's not soggy, it just looks that way because I watered it the other day.

No I just watched a bunch of videos. Well actually my other had root rot just as bad but it doesn't have those droopy leaves at all.

Although you're probably right about the bark thing Lauraeli. I don't like to use bark with any of my gardening or houseplants because it causes mold and rot. I don't even use it for bedding.

Ok. I like sphagnum but mixing in bark does help a lot for unhealthy roots. It's good to soak the bark first. And the sphagnum is so much better fresh. I have maybe 10 phals. I grow some in sphag, some in bark. I only use 100% sphag with 100% healthy phals. The 50/50 mix is my favorite. I repot most of my sphag phals in it when I bring them back from the store (most arent 100% healthy).

If you get the high-quality bark, such as orchiata, or a mix that is bagged at a greenhouse, there shouldnt be trouble with mold. Especially when it is mixed with sphag. Besides the anti-fungal properties of the sphag itself, it also wicks moisture away from the bark and out of the center of the pot.

If you do notice mold in an orchid mix, you can use hydrogen peroxide to water (the 3% kind) and then keep the mix a little drier (water less).

Cooper, where do you live? The photo is blurry but I agree with Lauraeli. Fresh sphag mixed with smaller bark. Soak the bark and sphag. Put the plant in a warm, bright spot and water when the media is almost dry.

You just have to wait a few weeks to see if the plant turns around. If you already repotted, leave it be until you see some sign of growth.
