Guess I'll read it again

Went to get a dictionary and instead of turning on a light, I grabbed "Captain From Castile". Fairly sure I bought that book new in 1945 or 6. For some reason, I don't remember it very well so after I finish "The Shadow of the Wind", by Carlos Ruiz Zafon I'll try Captain again. Almost done with the Shadow. Borrowed it from the library. More unexpected twists and turns in the plot. Hard to put down.

Hmmm,

This would be a good thread to list our winter reading projects. But this is a most busy time of year for me that I find myself in the curious state of not having any book or books lined up to read. Except for the new book by in the Flashman series of books, which I have yet to pick up for the bookstore that I ordered it from.

Come Thanksgiving though, and after, I should have time to read a few. Methinks I will stop in the school's library this week and see what current books are available.

Good plan! I recently decided I needed a "story". When reading at all lately, it's been cookbooks, how-to's, and magazines on informational topics. After heading out to the library, I found Alex Haley's "A Different Kind of Christmas" and Terry Pratchett's "Equal Rites". Odd that two so very different authors would appeal to me at random from the stacks and yet deal with so similar a topic.

Mr. Haley is a bit preachy for my taste, however, he has made his main character likable enough that I'm interested to see what the ending is.

Terry Pratchett is, well, himself and quite hilarious, though I must say that Granny Weatherwax is not my favorite of his characters.

Not sure what will come next, but I'm sure I'll get some great ideas from y'all. :-)

I had never even heard of Inax until last week, and didn't look at the specs on anything that far out of my price range (instead focusing on the conventional Double Vortex units), but wonder how it would face off against the similar-looking Toto Neorest (again, one's obviously copying the other). My take on this style though is that their functionality is available by just buying a Toto Washlet-type bidet on a standard good-quality elongated-bowl toilet, and that combination is about 1/3 the price. As for looks, I would rather have one of the increasingly popular tank-in-wall toilets (made by Toto, Grohe, Geberit, Duravit, and others) that's used in conjunction with usualy a wall-mounted bowl that's similar in appearance to the Satis/Neorest, actually even smaller and more svelte, and the wall-mounted flush buttons (usually there are two, with several color and trim options) are the only part of the tank you see. These are also great space-savers, protruding about 10" less into the room. I've only used the Geberit (it works great btw, and flushes very differently than anything else I've seen - a sheet of water sprays out from the back from just below the rim, aimed at the front a few inches below the rim, and the water spreads to the sides after it hits the front. This is also the only dual-flush toilet I've used where the low-water option worked adequately well. One of these with a Washlet would still cost less than a Neorest or Satis.

I read it, and I did find it very helpful in terms of understanding what seperates good lighting from bad. It doesn't have any sort of charts that will tell you how many of what sort of lamp it takes to achieve a certain level of light, but it's an excellent introduction. (((((((((((((((((Kat)))))))))))))))))))) I had my port put in in Sept of 08,finished chemo last feb,09,and i still have my port in.I have a power port,and while they use it for IV'S i don't let them use it for blood drives,and where i go for that they wouldn't use it anyway as my dr said ONLY an RN,or Dr shoul have access to it,and then they have to be up to date ,having done so in the last year or so and they have to use a special needle to access it. I go once a month to have it flushed,just went this past monday.My Onc also put me on warfin and said i have to stay on that as well,as long as i have the port.Sure made Chemo a lot easier,if chemo can be easy!!! One poster said"My brother had a port and he used the plastic wrap that sticks to keep his port dry when he took a shower ".I wonder why he did this?? You can take a shower with this in without covering it.The only thing i have to do is keep the bandaid on for 24 hours after it' been accessed (sp).Goo luck to ya,we'll be praying for a good outcome. Hmmm, toothpaste doesn't sound good. I know it's one where the light definitely matters. Maybe I should go even more neutral than that in this round. This is what I don't want my cabinets being installed over. There will not be upper cabinets on either of these masonry walls. Drywall patching to come, but... You can see the outline of the fridge etc. The old cabinets came down lower than the new ones (15-16" from counter before, now 18") AND there was previously a 4"-ish laminate backsplash which won't be there. So there's lots of ick that will show if I don't paint anything at all. I've lived with: --old end panel taken down when we first moved in 14 years ago because our fridge was wider than opening, could see ick down the side --old fluorescent fixture taken down 13 years ago, white patch painted around fix, never painted the ceiling --old top cab taken off the top of the fridge area 5 years ago when we got a new fridge that was taller, holes, multi-color etc. showed I don't want to live like that for a second with the new cabinets if I can avoid it. Even if it means painting twice. Because I know I'm very good at learning to look past things. I just got word no one is coming today. :( A down, dead day. I think I'll go bother appliance people. My last day this week to get out of the house as DH will be out of town so I'm on home-duty.

Gandle, "Captain from Castile" must have been a Book-of-the-Month club book back then. I remember it on my parent's bookshelf way back when, but have never read it. Sometimes it's very instructive to read those old bestsellers.

Right now I've been wallowing in WWII. I got a book from Amazon.uk, (my favorite place to find a lot of stuff that never gets published over here) that is diaries collected by Mass Observation of people's experiences during the war. It was a fascinating book, and did a lot to dispel the myths I've heard from my family my whole life about the war.

Now I'm reading Julie & Julia about a young woman who decides to make every recipe in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking & write a blog about her experiences. It's a charming book, and has some interesting insights into good.

Andie! The Mass Observation book is on my Amazon UK wish list. The whole MO project was amazing, and so much has been made available to historians that you continually trip over extracts in other books. I also read the review of Julie & Julia in the NYTimes and thought it sounded wonderful fun.

I order a lot from Amazon UK - as you say, so much that never gets published over here. I'm currently reading Harold Nicolson's Diaries - diplomat, writer, politician, and the husband of Vita Sackville West. And then I have "Post War" waiting for me, borrowed from Himself's admin. assistant who shares my taste in obscure books.

Andie and Sara...I have a book "The Englishwoman's Diary" - An Anthology edited by Harriett Blodgett which includes the Mass Observation diary of Nella Last. It's one of the most memorable pieces I've ever read. I'm off to find the book you two spoke of. josh

Josh & Sara, Just go to Amazon.uk & do a search on Mass Observation. There are a couple of series. One is edited by Dorothy Sheridan, who works at the MO archives at the University of Sussex & the other has been compiled by Simon Garfield. The latter has three books int he collection - one that covers the war years from the end of 1940 to VE Day, one covers the very beginnings of the war & the other covers the immediate post-war years which, with rationing & shortages that lasted until 1954 were very grim indeed.

Thanks, Andie. I found Sheridan and Garfield plus Maureen Waller's "London 1945-Life in the Debris of War" which sounds great.

Gandie, Have you lived in your house since 1945? Can't imagine what a treasure trove of books you must have. We moved to a smaller home 4 years ago and I had to halve my book collection of 34 years...hardest thing I've ever had to do. I'm not moving again! josh
