The air is filled with toxins. It's not just wood - it's cars, refrigerators, electronics, gas lines, televisions, plastic ....

Sammy, it's too bad that you had to see SD in this drought. My parents lived in San Diego for a number of years, and I visited them often - I always marveled at the beautiful plants and flowers, especially in neighborhoods that were fairly near to the ocean. But, of course, San Diego was always basically a desert next to an ocean - an ideal climate for growing succulents, which were magnificent. I myself live in Sacramento, and yes, we are near the fires. It's a bad year, as all the vegetation in the foothills and the mountains is so dry. And, while it's true that drought years (like earthquakes) are part of living in California, many of us are feeling that this drought cycle could be a long one. Some people have plowed up their front lawns and put in drought-tolerant plants. We who love roses are hoping that we can baby them through - many of the roses in the Old City Cemetery Rose Garden have come from places in the foothills where they survived on their own without anyone caring for them for years, so we know that they are survivors! I hope that you can visit San Diego later on under happier circumstances. And I'm glad your daughter is OK!

Thanks tj, hanzrobo, and roro! It was a gorgeous day to spend in San Diego. Wish you all were there to share it with but alas pictures will have to do this time. Hanz...one of these days we will get you to a show. I think you would have a blast AND be broke, yes. The Central Coast Show is coming up in San Luis Obispo. Perhpaps? Roro - Jordy did have some entries even though he helped judged. I think that he just excludes himself from those classes for the judging time. Kelly Griffin was the main judge for the show. It was fun listening to the thought process of the judges. They were carrying around a mic to talk to the crowd as they judged. Yes, the size of some of the specimens were astounding! I was just there yesterday! We were down visiting for a family reunion and I think our visit to Coronado was my favorite part--the weather was perfect, the beach sand beautiful, and the waves just right for my (grown) daughter to wade into with her skirt. Very relaxing, though I was a bit peeved to see that it cost $15 for two hours of parking. You took lovely pictures and thanks for sharing them.

I agree with the advice to hire a local designer. The yard is too chopped up to make meaningful suggestions from the pictures. Based on the "like succulents" comment, I would remove any shrubs that are in the "green meatball" stage which is overly sheared because it was in appropriately planted to begin with and replace with shrubs that are more casual to compliment the tropical palm look. A proper irrigation set up would also be advised when doing the renovation or as a first phase. Also consider using synthetic turf in areas where the old grass died but not as much square footage to save on overall costs. Maintenance should also be a consideration when developing a new design. Homeowners who are not willing to spend time in their gardens should have primarily plants that are diehard and tolerate neglect. Container plants need to be properly watered on their own irrigation station separate from the plants in the ground. The best bang for your buck would be to hire a local APLD certified designer to do at least these three things: 1) Recommend what to keep and what to remove (may or may not need to create a sketch, but could use the aerial photo to create zones or spaces to refer to 2) Develop a plant palette / list of plants 3) Hire them back to perform the placement after demo and irrigation is set up (This assumes no hardscape will be added or modified) Laypersons and contractors who are simply the installers who simply follow a plan of a planting plan don't realize that if the designer were digging the holes for the plants, they would invariably move them to appropriate spots regardless of where they appear on the plan. Field placement is far better than relying on a 2 dimensional plan. But not all designers get to be present during installation. That is one drawback of a design only unless you are willing to do it yourself and hire them back for the install process. If you do hire a designer, make sure the preliminary design is sent to a few licensed contractors who can give pricing and make sure the preliminary design is sufficiently detailed so as to provide meaningful pricing rather than ballpark figures.

You know what really hurts. A family who lives across the valley from us had their own little cabinet shop and house on a rural road above the agricultural preserve.
They worked so hard. The mom is the nurse at our elementary school and the 3 kids were in my children's classes.

They were the ones I was most worried about and I couldn't get ahold of them, so I drove up there with a road full of downed telephone poles and power lines laying on the street for miles.

Everything was unrecognizable.
Here is their business, the home is burned down behind the palm trees. We've known them for 7 years. I think they built the home themselves. He was a talented craftsman. He tried to be a 'man' and not cry as he wore sunglasses and looked over the ruins with me .... all his tools, the small animals that didn't get away.

As I drove the winding roads, I saw countless home burned down never mentioned or documented in any of the media.

Unbelievable, I cannot imagine anything like this. We have lots of fires in BC too, but never experienced them on the island. I often look out of our back window at the forest we have set ourselves in, and in times of high temps and drought as we do have now and then, I get very apprensive.

I am totally saddened by this. How many lives were lost, I am sorry, I do not know. I am always so sick about the poor animals too.

Just prayers and good wishes are sent to all who have lost homes and particularly family, that the rebuilding will be as painless and as expedient as possible.

Thanks for reporting these heart rendering scenes.

Just horrible-----Your story about the school nurse and her family is so sad. I'm sure they took great pride in the home they built------

I'm so sorry to see this. The news never can depict the total devastation of a tragedy like the fires, or put a human face on it. The only positive is that so few lives were lost. Thanks for posting these pictures.

I want to thank you all on this forum for your thoughfulness and concern. It truly helps to know we are all in this together. I'm touched by how much people pull together during these times.

We are so thankful to our brave, smart, skilled and talented firefighters who risk their lives to save our property and our lives!

My children's elementary school is burned all around the perimeter, but the school looks nearly unscathed! What does that tell you ... they stood their ground on all sides to save the k-8 San Pasqual Union school.
When the children returned, we sadly found out approx. 20 families in our school 'community' have nothing left.
But we are all taking good care of them and collecting everything they will need to make a new start. It makes us so proud of our community and it brings us closer

The news pictures were surreal and scary but these are profoundly sad. I always cry when I think of people's pets or the wildlife. Wish we could put a stop to these horrible fires. The amish have the right idea. Wish we could make it right again. Why do the fires always start with the winds? This has bugged me for a while.
