Or at least I hope so. After the heat we're now having thunder and lightning and intermittent rain. I think the roses are appreciating the change, and so am I.

I second on the view - breath taking! :D I suppose that explains why you put up with all the disadvantages of gardening in your climate, for it is surely worth it. Although I can't complain, I do get to look at lovely sunsets from my living room window. :D

I love a shot of Mrs. Dudley Cross, so translucent and water drops look always good on a rose. :D

Hi Kirk, It's been a while. We went through this during the summer. I'd heard so often that animals don't go to heaven, and I couldn't figure out why God would give us such wonderful creatures that we love so much, then just say, "No more." So I did my own Bible study on animals in heaven. There are tons of verses, that IN CONTEXT, speak of it. The strongest references that comforted me were in Revelation 5:8-13 where John tells us he heard all creatures recognizing Jesus as the Savior of the world and praising God right along with redeemed men. I'm with Kevin, above. Stone slab countertops aren't going away, if for no other reason than that they can be more economical than laminate or tile. A good tile-setter here in LA will charge $125/linear foot or more for installation. If you shop right, you can find prefab 8' long granite countertops for as little as $150, with installation and minor fabrication for a few hundred dollars more. It won't be the finest workmanship at that price, but still, you can get a basic 8' countertop with 4" backplash for $600 or less, installed, while the tile-setter's labor alone will be twice that, without adding in the cost of tile, mortar, grout or hardibacker. Unless you're buying prefab laminate counters at the big box store, toting them home yourself, and doing your own templating, cutting, and installation, you'll be hard put to match the price of those prefab stone counters. Special-order laminate costs about twice as much as prefab stone. So much for "In depth" reporting at CNN.

Wow, NHB - that is one gorgeous view. We've seen our share of houses perched on mountain sides and that's not for us. I love the more rolling land with the distance views of the mountains. It's not all about the land, of course, it's also lifestyle, and we love the slightly off kilter, hippy aspect aspects of Asheville along with the great dining, outdoor activities, entertainment options, the variety of festivals in the area etc. Last year we went down there with friends for LoxFest which was a hoot! bgj your trips to Knoxville sound like ours to Asheville, looking for the area that fits and is far enough away for peace but still allows us to get there and enjoy the aspects we love. I do want to go to Oak Ridge, though, just to see it! I would prefer to find an existing home and remodel it like we did this one but we haven't seen anything worth putting the time and $$ into. Biggest issue for DH is he won't accept a block basement, it has to be poured so I imagine we'll build. that's another thing to freak out about. We want a smallish house on acreage and if the land is there the house is 3500 sq ft and up - way more than I want to deal with. ellendi I hear you on the need for medical care. Privacy vs isolation is the tricky part but DH and I are partners and neither one of us is going to play the martyr for the other. We'll find a balance or we'll move on. Bottom line is, when I'm happy, he's happy ;-) bpathome we're really neighbors, you know? Several friends live on the main drag east of town. You probably knew/know one or two. And do not get me started on the library! That is honestly one of the hardest things for me to leave - we have the BEST library. shee that fixture is from Sea Gull Lighting but it's old and certainly not current stock. I spray painted it with Rustoleum ORB paint years ago when the look of brass was totally passé.

Thanks Romogen. I will research Helen Naude. Sarah, that's my attitude now too. An opportunity. Also, I've changed. I want more fragrance. I like the delicate coloring on Pristine but not at the loss of fragrance. I've heard Moonstone might be nice too but I think I'll try something completely different. sabalmatt, I thought Reine des voilettes was so popular. Again, location is so important. It seems there are a lot of Southern members on the forum and I appreciate their enticing pictures but their roses probably won't do as well in my cool, damp city. I need to go to the local rose garden this summer to see what roses do well in the PNW and keep a list. Same with me regarding space. I need to pay attention to each rose bush and not wait so long in deciding to toss it. I know some Austin's need more time to establish but it doesn't seem to take long to tell how well a HT will do and if you like it.

Hi Ingrid,
My Dad called me from Escondido yesterday and said,"You're not going to believe what we have. Thunder and lightening!" Sounds like you may be experienceing the same weather system.

Your postcard picture view makes me feel like I'm there. Thank you. After looking at Leonie's Apoline and Mrs. Dudley Cross, I think maybe I could bury just a few more roses.

Thank you so much for the complements. I am indeed lucky to live where I do. You're welcome to visit any time. Kitty, when you visit your dad, I'm only another 9 miles away and work in Escondido.

Renee,your view seems like a great excuse to invest in some beautiful climbers and ramblers. Cover it all up and you'll have your own private Eden.

Mrs. Dudley Cross is one of my all-time favorite roses. The shadings are so beautiful and forever changing, and not a single thorn or prickle under the leaves to contend with. I'm beginning to think Leonie's Apoline is made of plastic. It's unreal how long it's lasted, especially considering the heat.

Thank you, Krista, I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. I suppose the tea roses might be a bit too tender for your area. Elemire, I also thought that Leonie's Apoline should make a good cut flower and I'll test it on the next bloom. Masha, I think you could keep Mrs. Dudley to a reasonable size; it just won't have as many flowers. The teas range from two years to seven months (the rose closest to the camera is the youngest), so they still have quite a bit of growing to do. I just hope I've allowed enough room.

Would love to meet you Kitty, and of course Renee, you too, although I know for you it's quite a trip. Anyone from the forum who would like to stop by is more than welcome although I know I'll be constantly apologizing for the little that my far-from-mature garden has to offer. Realistically it will probably be another two years before I can feel that there's enough of interest, since I'm constantly discarding more mature but not so satisfactory roses and putting little bands in their place.

When I saw the title to your post I felt a little melancholy, but then when I opened it I realized it's just the beginning of a brand new rose season for you. For me it means everything will soon be buried three feet deep in snow.

Your roses and your garden are breath taking, and so extremely healthy too.
