Chlorine free pool article

There was a very interesting article about using plants to have a chlorine free swimming pool.

Seems like some of the info would be helpful here.

Nancy, we don't usually discuss swimming pools and don't reccommend using a pond as a pool. It isn't healthy. Sandy

I agree. Swimming in a fish pond or water garden can lead to some pretty serious health problems, especially if pond water gets in eyes, ears or open sores. Swimming pools need to be chemically treated to kill harmful bacteria.

I figure this is a topic that I would like to chime in on. Salt pools in the US started becoming popular like Kelly said about 10 years ago. I as a pool builder am leary of any new technology that has not ben thouroghly tested. Even though I do install the systems when asked to I still give the pros and cons of using these systems. This all being said I have seen a trend over the past few years. For every salt system that I install I am removing 2 of the systems on other pools. Why is this you ask. In most cases it in the stone around the pool being washed away. And others are from equipment failures caused by the salt. Many will argue on here that salt is not corrosive and that bonding of a pool will solve these problems. I disagree. I build my pools properly and when I continue to have the same problems on salt pools that I do not have on Regular erosion feeder systems. I have to question what is the problem. And the common factor is the salt systems. Nothing else. As far as Ozone systems. this is another system that I do not believe in. I think it is a big waste of money. Just another gimic for you to buy to put on your pool. Now even though I do not see the problems with this system that you see with salt I do not see the benefit of using them. This all leads back to my personal opinion that they have been using chlorine for well over 100 years on pools and never have seen the service issues that we see today with all the different type of chorination and augmentations sytems that are installed now days. So if it ain't broke don't fix it. Good luck on the pool build.

Under proper care, some can last over two years. Some will need annual and some you may need more of. The biggest variable is how they are stored. Cool, dry, and dark are usually the best conditions for storing. Leaving them out in the sun and rain is not a good idea. Scott

shock is just high levels of chlorine. to get rid of algae, you add enough chlorine in higher doses to kill algae. your cya levels do dictate at which level of chlorine is needed to sanitize a pool. no offense to me or i'm sure to troublefreepool taken, but with your cya level, that is what is recommend to sanitize your pool. you really need to get your cya level down. take a look at poolguynj's post above. he says the same thing. the problem with pool stores is that they sell you the trichlor tabs or the cal hypo. the trichlor tabs have stableizer in them. the more you use, the higher your cya gets. over time, problems start to occur. it will get to where you can't keep enough chlorine in. they will then sell you shock, which is stronger doses of chlorine. that will get rid of algae for awhile, but then when you go back to your regular chlorine levels, you will have problems all over again. its a cycle. in the meantime, your plaster is getting eaten away little by little. the cal hypo has calcium in it. use these and your calcium level goes up. i'm sure that there are some pool stores that have good and reliable testing, but most don't. my test kit also tests for cc's by the way. i'm not trying to sell you anything, or am i affiliated with anyone. i'm just a pool owner trying to pass on information that has worked for me and alot of other people. i have had my pool for almost two years now. i have never trusted a pool store or taken in samples. luckily, i found the guys over at troublefreepool early on. i used the BBB (bleach, baking soda, borax)method since my pool was first built. regular old bleach has no stablizer in it. it will not raise your cya. thats why i used it. it did get old pouring in the bleach every day. i did just get a SWG so that i don't have to do that anymore. i still use the baking soda to raise my alkalinity when needed, and i still use the borax to raise my Ph when needed. Of course to lower alk and Ph, i still have to use Muriatric acid.

Well, they are both chlorine which is the first thing you need to consider. Next is what kind of stone you have around the pool area and the next is how well your pool is bonded - to make sure that you will not have a problem with galvanic corrosion. It is not that salt is bad, it is just that there are a few negative things that can happen that you should be aware of in order to make an informed decision as to if it will be right for you. Not to mention I'm not fond of leeches! :-D I tell you, finding the leeches in the filter is what finally deterred my bullheaded seven year old from trying to "accidentally on purpose" fall into the pond.

Perhaps Nancy was thinking we could use the info to remove algea and/or some bacteria? I think I'll be having a look there anyway, just to see if there might be something I am not yet arware of to help me with algea control or bacteria that could create stagnat pockets on the bottom of the pond. I'm not sure I'll find anything I can use personally, but it's worth a browsing!

Ignore them Sandy. They are the people that the article talked about. You can talk about swimming pools if you want to. There is nothing in the forum rules forbidding it. And they obviously know a whole lot more than the people who wrote the article.

There are lots of articles about natural swimming pools and quite a few people getting into the business.

There are also quite a few people who have an inate fear of swimming in anything that doesn't have chlorine in it. I know lots of people who have swum in lakes, streams, farm ponds, reservoirs, water-towers, oceans, creeks, cenotes, sink-holes and other natural bodies of water for many, many years with absolutely NO HEALTH PROBLEMS!!.

I've also known many, many people who have gone to school without being shot at.

These TERRIBLE health problems cause by swimming in naturally occurring bodies of water do happen...almost as often as gunmen take over a public school.

So post on. It was an interesting article even if it caused fear in a few.

The difference between all of those bodies of water and a liner pond is a huge one. In all those natural bodies of water, there is a constant exchange of water. Old water out, new water in. This exchange is going on 24/7. In a liner pond, the system is closed. Bacteria (both beneficial and harmful) flourishes in bogs. That is not a rumor....it is fact.

ccoombs1.. Instead of making INFALLIBLE PRONOUNCEMENTS why don't you read up on these "swimming ponds"? You just might learn something and then will have something to bring to the conversation besides.."WARNING, DANGER, WILL ROBINSON"
And when you proclaim a FACT then you should have it backed up with REPUTABLE commentary from someone other than yourself.

Problem outbreaks in natural bodies of water are caused primarily by runoff of contaminated water getting into the body of water.

When you build a swimming pond (or any pond for that matter) you can eliminate runoff COMPLETELY by protecting your pond with a raised berm.

I don't know where this bogus idea that lined ponds cause bad water came from...but it is bogus. Natural bodies of water are much more susceptable to contamination from runoff, animal infestation and the real biggie: GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION seeping up through the soil.

So read up on the subject and learn a few facts instead of perpetuating rumors.

And I'm not going to provide you with any links. Finding the information by yourself is a great part of the learning process.

natteringninny .....so I can't make "infallible pronouncements" but you can? Seems like we have a difference of opinion here. I am a certified Koi Health Advisor. I know what sort of bacteria live ponds, and how those bacterias can affect humans. You think it's fine and dandy to swim in them, then go ahead! And I'm not going to provide you with any links either. Finding the information by yourself is a great part of the learning process.

One of the reasons I stopped frequenting this forum with any regularity was because of all the strongly entrenched wives tales.

Swimming pool ponds has been discussed many times here and many people have chlorine free pool/ponds that they regularly swim in. Yes there is a risk that you might pick up some sort of harmful bug in a pond, especially if you have a dirty pond and a weak immune system, but there is also a risk you could pick up something in a natural body of water or the dirt in your back yard, or for that mater many people have picked up contagions in crowded chlorinated public swimming pools.
Nothing in this world is completely safe, the only thing you can be positively sure of is that if you go swimming in your pond without waiting 60 minutes after eating, you will get a cramp and drown.
