My newest acquisition

Is Baron Giraud de l'Ain. It is too bad that Roses of Yesterday is on the way from my house to the beach:-). I am putting it in a pot to see how it does since I am not sure it is a great choice for my climate. The one bloom on the plant (can't really call it a bush) was not red at all, but quite purple and very fragrant.

Masha, I totally get it, that Baron Giraud de l'Ain was irresistible to you! The flower looks incredible pretty! I have never seen a photo of the Baron this purple and I also can't remember seeing these kind of white vertical markings on the petals either. The white markings on the edges of the petals on the other hand are of course his "brand name sign"!

Hopefully he will became a beautiful bush and thrive for you!

Masha---that is a beautiful bloom-----Lots of TLC and it will flourish.

We all understand---we are all rose addicts---we are lucky people.

Thanks Andy. It's a little pot bound but I might get around to potting it up before winter. If not then it's gonna have to wait til spring. It's a little malnurished but I already gave it it's first of many compost tea and fish/kelp feedings to get some deep green growth out of it.

Here ya go Tyler the Daylight Site you wanted. I put it on here so you can just click on the link. In a PM you would have to copy and paste. It's just easier this way;). Up at the top the first sentence reads "How much time do I have to go for a bike ride in..." then after that sentence is a blank area where you put the location you want. I like this daylight calculator because it gives you the whole year of that location. Looks like the second week of January we start gaining some significant light;). Gain a minute every day. Yayyyyy;)!!!

My house is 6 years from being a real antique. And wall paper covers a lot of irregularities in the old plaster. What's the date on the "real" sampler? I have an old one, dated 1823 that I found in a box of linens I bought for $21. It's initialed but not dated. I have another that is unfinished, as well as unsigned but I think it's very early, mostly judging from the house where I bought it. Back to your lamp or lamps as you say it's one of a pair. It's not a whale oil lamp as they have or had a distinctive burner and were pretty well driven off the market by 1870. And I don't think your lamp is that old. I think it burned kerosene, nd yes the chimney is new. I remember when the hardware store had chimneys like that on a shelf. I live in Iowa and in the early 1960's there were still a lot of areas without electricity,,,,or plumbing!! You should be able to identify the pattern of the oil reservoir and date it by the pattern..

Gorgeous bloom, Masha. My Baron Girod de l'Ain, which is now three years old and was even in a 5-gallon pot when it arrived in the garden, looks remarkably like your plant. I've thought it must be because it's tucked into a corner with very limited light, but now I'm wondering. Would those of you who grow it please share full bush shots of the rose?

Seattlesuze, oh no! I just have to laugh... This picture on HMF is gorgeous. Perhaps, your climate is closer to theirs than mine, so there is more hope for you!

I just wanted to ask about Roses of Yesterday. Years ago when I visited there they were selling grafted roses from (I think)Arena. Someone said they are doing things differently now. Are they selling own root roses now? I really enjoyed going there and would like to sometime again(we live about 5 hours away)

This is the answer I received from them to my own query.

"We grow some own root stock here, some field grown bare root grafted
and own root stock in the San Joaquin Valley, CA, as well as we source
out some varieties bare root from Canada and Europe. We ship bare root
Jan. through April (January some varieties sell out already though held for
later shipment). Potted roses are available year round. California grown roses
are own root or Dr. Huey, and Canadian and European varieties are on
Rosa multiflora root stalk."

I bought Buff Beauty, Souvenir de la Malmaison, Penelope and Baron from them all grafted, and I believe on multiflora. I buried the bud union and hope for the best:-). No sign of trouble yet, and SDLM is no wimp at 3' in three months.
