The Garden Party

I can't believe it is Thanksgiving next week

It has been so warm and with the time change moved to the end of october the evenings are longer and I just think we are still in October. It has been so warm I haven't switched to the flannel jammies yet. We haven't switched from screens to storm windows, Finally got some rain last night, it has been clear and dry, great to get all the end of the garden stuff done. Someone gave us a large butternut squash, much to dh's disgust, not a fan of winter squash. I think I am going to try a stuffing (it has some fancy foreign name and does not go in the bird) recipe that uses squash, onions and swiss chese. We have a big get togehter and I like to try new things on the crowd. If no one likes it, no one goes hungry and I know if it is a hit or not. Plus, one of the younger set is bringing his girl (finally! we have heard so much about her and we promised we would not bite), a vegitarian, so it will be one more thing for her.

I can't believe this whole year is heading toward history so quickly. I think I'm in denial about the holidays. Regarding the weather, as far as I'm concerned, the warmth and rains are just a payback for the cold spring, the rain-less summer, and the dry non-descript early fall.

In our business, we are headed into greenery making soon for the holidays. Because of the nature of the raw-materials, it's always done in an unheated greenhouse and I can't tell you how uncomfortable it can be to do fine handiwork, wiring and bowing with frozen hands and in the perpetual cold........so I welcome the warmer weather in late fall until the goods are made and inventory sufficient.

I'm doing the Thanksgiving day feast, don't get flustered with cooking for crowds, and don't even have to crack a cooking book because I've done it so many times and don't experiment with food for holidays......everyone wants the family traditional menu, so I'm looking forward a chance to have the family here and swim in a sea of stuffing. LOL. There is very little I shall have to buy, the turkey is already residing in the freezer, and celery is still growing in my garden.

We are doing a gift-exchange for Christmas this year, so shopping shall be minimal and I have already bought cards, and plan to get the tree up earlier and enjoy the spiritual aspects of it this year and not be caught up in the hoop-la. My heart is already into nesting down with bird-watching, quilting, and some house renovation through the winter, and my working in the greenhouses with the flowers and veggie garden plants for next spring. Bring it on!

I just wanted to say thanks everyone!! Very informative articles and so much knew stuff you learn each day comming here...I never understood this about bark and wood.. All I can say is thanks! I FINALLY found some! Fir bark... I remebered buying orchards from someone I met in my area over 5 years ago that was growing beautiful and citrus back then, and I remembered him saying someday he was going to sellevery good supply he could think of for orchards and tropicals, to help people be sucessful at these plants. It was a dream of his. I saved his number from then. I called him, and come to find out, he is a big supplier of YES!! "fir bark"...We were both happy to hear from each other besides. He has fine and or small and medium grade...He says it's real real good stuff. He specializes in this bark..NICE ha. Now I am excited. I get a FREE delivery of three bags within the next couple of days... I will take a pic, and you can see if it as nice as he says when I get to using it.... If it is, then I would be willing to tell you where I got it privately, since it can be VERY difficult to obtain this hard to find good stuff..:-) A secret he shared. I asked him how his plants were doing. He said better than ever before, since he waters his plants once a month with, ready? Seltzer water, sodium free.... He explained the benefits in detail, hard to remember...Hummm.. As anyone ever heard of this, watering container plants with seltzer water?

I didn't shut it down today after all. I took out the dead hyacinth and some lily leaves but the water temp is registering 45F. The fish are still too active to catch! I don't know what other people do who bring their fish in but I bring pond water and fish in at the same time. That way the temps are the same. It does mean I have to monitor the ammonia carefully and I do a water change within a week. I will pull the bottom drain tomorrow and run the pond off the skimmer. Hardin I'd love your climate. I hate winter! At least in your climate you can leave your fish out all winter. The 2 ft thick ice we get here is not great for fish ponds. Patti

oops, sorry, I had the lantana pic in my daylily folder and then moved it and forgot that it would mean it wouldn't show here anymore. Nothing fancy, just bright gold lantana in the ground. Thank you everyone! It opened up more and became less recurved as the day went on and you could see it across the back yard -so bright!

After wearing a modified mullet (short on top, down to my behind in back) for a lot of years, my daughter convinced me to get a new style. I loved what the designer did, but the $60 price tag is more than I can justify every six weeks. So I armed myself with a photo of my new cut and six weeks later took it to a less expensive salon. In addition to showing her the photo I took care to explain it as well. She assured me she understood exactly what I was talking about, then proceeded to give me an entirely different style. Tears? You bet! But still, I went back to her again and again, telling her each time how to make it more closely resemble my previous style, and eventually it was very close. I thought we had come to an understanding and then the next time she cut my hair it was a whack job again! I've had the flowbee for many years and used it to cut my husband's and grandchildren's hair, so I began to use it on myself, too. It did alright, but not the style I wanted. It has been more than 2 months since my last haircut and I just didn't know which way to go. In a moment of desperation I drove down to the little shop that my 81 year old mother goes to. I asked for the owner (she cuts Mom's hair and is in her late 60's). I had printed out my photo to show her, but in my haste, had forgotten to bring it with me. I proceeded to explain my style and she said she knew exactly what I meant. I knew I was going to drive home in tears, but I just couldn't get up and leave. And guess what? When she was done I WAS nearly in tears! I couldn't believe my eyes. It was exactly the style I verbalized to her. Bless you, little old Lina!
