but its true

Four different dolphin[same or different ones?] snuck within a dozen feet-thats not a misprint-of me this morning.Snuck is exactly what they did.Instead of rolling or porpoising to take in air they just stuck the tip of their snout out of the water.First time I saw it I thought it was a sea turtle.The first one caught me off guard-I heard one breath and saw it splash across a shallow sand bar-turned and right in front of me it looked like a submerged surf board.I thought he had me and could of but it just watched for a few seconds and slipped away.The third one came in so shallow it was laying on the bottom with back exposed.The last one caught me off guard again and was so close I was able to stroke its back with the tip of my seven foot rod.Did that to a manatee once but never flipper.Didn't quite have the nerve to wade out and touch.

Must be mating season.Biggest pod of river dolphin I have ever seen.Besides their normal feeding pattern they were doing all kinds of crazy things.Racing,rising out of the water,swimming in a small group slapping their tails.One actually threw a fish in the air and caught it.Probably ridiculing me as I only caught one which they could have stolen.Whatever it was a lifetime experience to be part of that.By the way the one who was grounded had skin like an elephant.

Wow, what a morning. AND you caught a fish :)

What an experience, Pete - wish you'd had a pocket sized camera. Part of the appeal of fishing to me are the things to be experienced around, near, in the water other than the target fish. We've had offshore dolphins come to, and follow the boat, circle us - I'm told they are intelligent enough they enjoy play, maybe you were the new toy they were curious about.

I don't know anything about your river dolphins, but don't wash your waders and keep us posted if you find them/they find you again....

I love your fish stories, Pete. Your writing style reflects and communicates your excitement and wonder. It's almost enough to make me take up fishing--though around here (KS), all I'd probably get are a catfish and mosquito bites.

You and the dolphins keep on playing together--I like carrying that image around in my mind.

I've come to the conclusion that buying plants at Wally World is shortsighted. I typed something else in there at first but decided I want to continue to post. We have 3 open here at the moment with two more to open shortly. We have lived near newly opened stores frequently. Often when they first open the plants are pretty nice and then after the first season or even in the first few weeks the quality goes down fast. I've had several conversations with their employees and it all depends on the person they hire to run the department. Once I went into a plant dept and the plants were absolutely amazing. The difference from the previous month was almost a shock. I asked for the manager because I wanted to complement whoever was responsible. It turned out it was a tiny little thing from Hawaii who drove the other employees crazy because she actually made them work. She rearranged all the products and made sure the plants were properly cared for and there was a good selection. She didn't last long. There were too many complaints from other employees. It is similar to the aquarium dept. They hire the occasional person who knows what they are doing and then the dept manager won't let them take care of the fish because it is too time consuming. One enterprising manager convinced his bosses to let him get rid of the fish entirely because it took too much time away from stocking the shelves. He told his department that he didn't care if all the fish died or the tanks were filthy because the fish didn't make sense salewise. The last tanks disappeared about 5 weeks ago. I am getting the same reports on our Meijers stores as well. Those little containers with the bulbs in them? This was the first year I have seen them put out in any condition to sell. Most of the time they are placed in direct sun with no water and in excessive heat. I have seen other packaged plants that are carried over from the last year and sold as a new shipment. Don't try to invest too much into those Walmart plants. Take a look at the employees and see if they are taking a break or taking care of the plants. Sandy

I'm suspicious this might be my problem too! I admit, I only used 2 fertilizers, one of them bought from wal-mart :( Now I know better! Beans are meh. Cabbage did great. Carrots are tasty, but a little small and slow growing. Everything, actually, seems to be behind schedule. Our tomato plants are huge and look healthy, but have only a handful of slowly developing green tomatoes, with a lot of dying buds (last pic in the album shows it) I'm going to try to add the bloodmeal and high nitrogen, as suggested above, and see if it will turn things around. I hope it will!!! (we water 3 times a week, with our sprinkler system, about 30 minutes. I need to start measuring how much water it's getting, but I suspect it isn't too much or too little (especially since mel says you can't over-water a SQFT garden)) Here is a link that might be useful: My sad zucchini

Thanks so much Bill for responding! I'm not worried about using too much... actually trying to figure out how little I can get away with. We kept to one bin and used the bin size to keep the amount of worms we had under control. Now I'm kinda regretting my decision and thinking about starting another bin now rather then in the fall as I'm now worried I don't have enough castings for gardening needs later this summer. I was just adding a spoonful to my transplants in the ground and counting on that and natual soil to grow healthy flowers. But now with these container veggies I'm growing not quite sure what to give as the main source of nutrients for the veggies are going to be coming from the castings themselves (not counting on the potting soil to have much in there for the plants as it's mostly peatmoss and perlite). Also we are using bottom self watering (wicking)to do this so 'nutrients' won't be purged away. Basically now that we've got the vermicomposting down (actually learned they happier the more you kinda neglect them and just keep em warm and fed LOL tough little buggers) we are ready to learn how to most efficently use their castings as a main source of nutrients with veggies. Was under the assumption that castings are more packed with nutrients (on top of the bonus of microbial activity) that maybe less could be used in comparison to say standard organic compost some grow their plants with... in a container setting. Was I wrong to think that? Not sure if anyone has ever tried to use castings in such a way or it's even possible. P.S. Also, after talking to the hubby this morning we are hoping to get enough worms going now to supply castings in place of regular compost in a small (2x3) square foot garden next year. Normally the homemade soil requirement is 1/3 peatmoss, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 organic compost. Of course we would be using less castings.. maybe 20 percent of the mix.. and maybe up the amount of peatmoss and perlite a bit.

Hmmmmmm. Sometimes these upscale places do not know the difference between oh, say, French peasant food and French cuisine developed and tested, by trusted experienced chefs, with the recipes carefully guarded, and handed down through generations. For instance, Italian royalty did not eat squid. Squid is what gets caught in the fishermen's nets and is cut out and tossed to the street urchins who did not have the money to buy fish and vegetables. I Googled *Chicken Skin Salad* and one came up from Daniel Boulud's ''Cafe Boulud Cookbook'' linked below. Yuck. I guess it is just a matter of what one is used to. I mean if someone tried to explain hot dogs to a visitor I'm sure the person would cringe. "Hot dogs! Why yes siree, they are a favorite of almost every American! You just take some pig intestines and rinse out the fecal matter, and then fill them with ground up snouts and tails, and liver and hearts and spinal cord and whatever else is laying around after a hog butchering. Mmmmmmmmmm. Oh and lots of salt. LOTS of salt. Then boil 'em. Boy, I could sure go for one right now with onions. Hey wait! Where are you going?? Don't you want to eat here? perhaps they are beginning to recognize you?--they are so intelligent--and playful--or it could be that someone else has fed them?

glad you are taking us landlocked frustrated fisher people along with you on your trips---I miss it--grew up in New Orleans and we went fishing or crabbing most summer weekends--love the sea

we have several rabbits in our garden(darn rose eaters) that have become so accustomed to our presence that they will graze on clover flowers beneath our feet--we didn't do anything to try to tame them--they just seem to feel comfortable around us--I am really worried about what they are going to eat next, tho

Jealous. Yes, color me jealous ;)

That is really amazing and I'd be out there at the crack of dawn pretending to be a mermaid. No doubt whatsoever.

Flounder actually as thats what we enjoy eating but I will take anything even if I release all others.To add insult to injury the fishing report said rivers full of flounders and waders are catching 5 or 6 in a short time.I didn't see any other waders in the 3 times I fished this week and only caught one keeper.
I wade wet this time of year but have to wear trousers and wading shoes as there are sting rays,jellyfish,sharp oyster shells,etc.

Mnn flounder we used to ge the big snowshoes up here 3 lbs and more last I heard they are almost non existant now. Kool experience!

The dolphins probably do recognize you they are more intelligent than we are. They stayed in the water and let us two footers create all the havoc. They roll around and eat fish all day and play...what a life.

Port Orange-they recognize humans but there was no reason to recognize me personally.I know how to call them now-splash and they come to see if its fish.I was able to call quite a few.
This morning I took a bike ride,while going over a high bridge I looked down and there were some.
