Hamp, your William R. Smith looks great, and so pure. How does it hold up to thrips? My Mrs Dudley Cross has not produced a single bloom this year that I would call attractive ... all of them are eaten up with thrip damage, and just plain ugly to the bone. This has been her worst spring ever in my garden. The thrips have also ravaged my Gruss roses.

SdlM is such a fine rose! And the Captain is looking very good too.

Very distinctive clematis! I've never seen one like that before ... I like it.

Got a little bit of rain down here also. I have a 6" rain gague on the top of my chain link fence. Went out yesterday morning to check (when it rains I like to check it every 24 hrs). It had overflowed. The day before it had a little over 2". I empty it every time I check. The bushs look great today. Lots of new growth.

Larry, The Leonardus I found have the markings of the montana pawnee. I'm aware that these are not in any way connected to the small population around Pikes Peak. However, it is interesting that I couldn't locate any photos that matched the Leonardus I found. The picture of the Pawnee in Kaufman matches to a "T". But, when I went on line to try to find a photo, I couldn't. I end up back at the montana pawnee. So, I may submit my photo to Bugguide, as their photo base for Leonardus is limited, as is NABA, BAMONA, and any other database on the web. And, yes, I read about the interblending of the species. Quite interesting. I can't pretend to understand the limiting of the species, except that DNA has been checked. I've read quite a bit lately about the small amount of difference in DNA it takes to establish a new species/subspecies. Currently, Mark Dreiling from Bartlesville (who does a lot of blacklighting), has a moth that may be a new species. He has a pbase gallery. I have only seen the one Brephidium exilis here locally. It was in my yard with a large population E isola alce. The one I saw was a county record, and the first seen this far east in Oklahoma. I was south and west of Tulsa, not too far from the Texas border when I went on my outing. It's within the range for the B exilis. I also found out that the elusive Ambliscirtes linda have been spotted there. So, I'm sure I'll go back--most likely in the spring. This is my week to travel to Ohio. I head out on Thursday, and will travel through St. Louis, Chicago, and then to Cleveland. There are some butterfly houses along the way, so I'll stop off and enjoy some tropical B-flies. And, hopefully, visit Elisabeth on the way home. No computer. I always leave home without it! Sandy

Back from the grocery and such...now for more fun things like gardening talk! It's raining cats and dogs here again now. During that 5:00pm storm, 3 of our 7 ft tall buddleia are leaning at a 45 degree angle from the downbursts of wind. We hope that the roots are in good shape. We'll probably have to cut them back to lighten the tops and try to replant them upright again. We (DH, DS1 and I) built the dry streambed ourselves in a few hours on one Saturday morning. We had the river rock delivered on a palette right beside the spot where we literally just dumped them by wheelbarrow loads. DS2 and DH laid all of the flagstone stepping stones throughout the outer garden that you see flooded. BTW, all of that water had soaked into the ground or flowed down to our creek by 6:30pm. When we first moved here, a rain like that would wash away our driveway. So, this was a necessity and we're trying to make it pretty. Monarda, Japanese irises, iris pseudocorus, iris palladia, the Ruby Star coneflowers, perennial ageratum, cannas, amsonia hubrechtii, illicium, bog salvia, creeping jenny, nepeta subsessillis (the only nepeta that likes moisture), all do well in the rain garden area and then survive a drought, too. Another clump of 'Ruby Star'. This picture was taken from above them on the slope and that's a bit of perennial heliotrope showing on the ground below. This group is not down in the rain garden, but mid-way up the slope.

Think I'm doing my part of water conservation, in fact, I know I am. Being a 'onesie' household, I use very little in the grand scheme. Have had a front loader clothes washer for years, and being a bit of a recluse, I don't generate much laundry. I do all the right things - no partial loads and since I hate unloading the dishwasher, I run that as infrequently as possible too. As for the running water while tooth brushing .... I grew up in a conservative post depression era so don't even go there with me ! (Besides, I use a Sonicare double time and sit on the bed watching tv while my four minutes winds down!) As for outdoor/garden watering - I've only watered when absolutely necessary all summer, on 'their' scheduled days, but not just because it was 'my day'. My yards are established and I don't waste time, energy or water .... most everything has survived nicely. I am overthinking late fall planting - have a dozen or so pots that need to go in the ground now. This rain may give me the courage to tuck 'em in. Only other consideration is my beneficial nematodes - with a later calendar shipment than usual, I have 6 million little 'todes in my fridge now ready for installation. This rain has been a real blessing. The 'todes need watering in and dodging the 'water gestapo' to do so was going to be a challenge ......... Thank you, Mother Nature!

Your photos are just beautiful, as I have said before. Echo what Randy says -- my roses look like doodoo with the thrips. Why do we grow these silly things? If it isn't the mildew, its the thrips...if it isn't the thrips.

Hamp your grow the prettiest roses!! I recognize that malva LOL! I tried growing a different one this year that has dark maroon flowers. I just put the seedlings in the ground yesterday, but I'll let you know if they turn out good.

I'm SO jealous of your florida sieboldii. I've tried that one three times and have yet to have it survive even enough to put on new growth. I'm not going to give up though!

Randy, an odd thing about WRS, I have two and one is a thrips magnet but the other one isn't. They're both very young and I don't think they've found both yet. It doesn't seem like there are as many thrips this year but certainly enough to make the roses look terrible. The clematis is very distinctive, lots of blooms but not much foliage.

Thank you Jackie but my roses don't compare to yours, neither does my garden. I have another malva that I've had for years that's similar to zebrina but is darker without the strips. Maybe it's the same as yours. I'm anxious to see yours. I'm wondering it Florida Sieboldii isn't more suited for our warmer climates since it blooms so early and continues into winter.

Thank you Eric. I hadn't thought about it but the clematis does remind me of a passion flower.

The rains will shatter anything here those are gorgeous. I Have to move Capt Dyel as Kronprincessin Vintoria has overwhelmed it. I would love to grow Florida Sieboldi but I understand it really isn't that hearty up here it's truly magnificent.

The rains beat mine to the ground one day after they were in full flush :-). They didn't look nearly as beautiful as these.....WRS is a wonderful rose. Huge blooms held upright, loves to bloom, but the thrips do love him. CDdG is lovely and Florida Seiboldi is one of my favorites. Wonderful photo's my friend.
